Brexit means brexit. I’m sure there are plenty of hardworking English right backs we can get instead

Although it is precisely these non EU immigrants that Brexit won't stop :-)

I can't see any reason why this lad would get a permit, but, this is football, who knows.

I know next to nothing about immigration law in Britain, but you'd think they'd be reasonably confident of being able to do something for them to extend his stay for another week.

Governing-body endorsements

The Home Office is ultimately responsible for issuing UK work permits.

However, in order to secure a work permit from the Home Office, a footballer's employer must first receive a “Governing Body Endorsement”, or GBE, for that player from The FA.

The FA's application for a GBE can be viewed here. Generally speaking, a club must demonstrate that a non-EU/EEA player is:

internationally established at the highest level, and
will make a significant contribution to the development of football at the highest level in the UK.

Automatic qualification

In order to automatically qualify for a GBE, the player must have participated in a certain percentage of senior international matches for his national team.

Generally, that percentage is calculated over a two-year period. However, The FA, recognising that it is more difficult for younger players to break into their senior national teams, reduce the calculation period to one year for players under the age of twenty-one.

The required percentages of competitive senior international matches are determined by that country’s FIFA World Ranking over the relevant one or two-year period as follows:

FIFA Ranking 1-10: 30% and above
FIFA Ranking 11-20: 45% and above
FIFA Ranking 21-30: 60% and above
FIFA Ranking 31-50: 75% and above

The rankings are updated monthly, and in the two-year period preceding August 2016, Brazil is ranked at number five in the world. In the one-year period preceding August 2016, Brazil is ranked at number eight.

If the player does not automatically meet these criteria, the club can request an FA Exceptions Panel consider the player’s experience and value in order to determine whether a Governing Body Endorsement should nevertheless be granted.

Basically if he has no european heritage then it looks extremely unlikely.

They must have thought of this, otherwise what on earth was the point of getting him over here in the first place? I wonder if there is any loophole that can be exploited via our Waterford/Aussie connections?

...or extend his stay.

They would have spoken to immigration professionals about this by now. Anderson et al will have been in touch with immigration lawyers and/or the FA/FL or whoever deals with this. If it was a flat 'no' then he would surely just not be here still.

Brown seems to have gone from 'a slight chance' last week to 'a toss of the coin' this, and this would have come from actual discussions with people that know what they are doing.

We'll just have to wait and see.

The "discovery" of an Irish grandparent will sort this out. To be sure.

Adver reporting that Brown has indicated he wants to sign him but does not know what the situation is, advised Adver to talk to Steve Anderson, but he is here on trial again this week.

All that was in PB's presser last week...there was no question posed by Mr. Talking Hawes in PB's post match, RE: Transfers. So the Adver is just recycling as per until this Thurs/Fri. Would be better at finding out more info on Conroy and Woolery rehab progress. An interview request of course may have been denied but at least ask about their status.
