Callum Lang seems to be the smart money and being mentioned a lot. 10 in 30 for Morecambe last year.

5'11" too....
Linked in June with a move to Everton.

A number 9 and a number 5 hopefully to come according to Brown.

I like it how he talks about players in terms of their shirt number, except for when he goes and gives Doughty number 3.

Good. Didn’t fancy him. Cue the ‘how can Chesterfield pay more than us’ diatribes..

Budget wasn't the Spireites problem last season, as they had the 6th highest in Div 4.... rather poor maangement and recruitment after all they took Brad Barry off us and had players like Jak McCourt and Sid Nelson.... oh.

What is happening with Ajose at the moment, he like Doughtly enjoyed his time at stfc and felt wanted and scored goals and may be prepared to drop if he feels he can get his career back on track

Struggled to get into the Bury team last year. Still under contract at Charlton.

I thought Ajose was off to Coventry, doesn't seem to have transpired though.

Would fit the bill, and would also explain why Power is dealing with it (As Brown alluded to)

Ajose would be an excellent signing. Solve that possible goalscoring problem in one go. Surely he can't drop to L2 though.

Why not?

He was considering it last season. His stock is probably not particularly high at the moment and if nobody else is in for him then may have no choice, other than rotting in Charlton's reserves.

Edit: He's not 5'11, though

Because when I'm disappointed when he doesn't sign I can use it as an excuse. :-)

Ajose wouldn't be a number 9 either, would he?  I am sure Brown means a forward with some presence who can score - Thorne would have been a 9, Finney, Shearer etc.

What is the difference between a 5 and 6?  This one must be a Reg era thing, is a five more of a stopper than a 6?  We used to have it the other way around, 6 was always the nutter.

Yes I would say that PB is suggesting that he is what would be an old fashioned number 9 of the slightly larger target man style of play.

It dates well back to when the printed formation was basically 2-3-5. The full backs being the two took 2 and 3. Then in front you had 3 'half backs' 4 being the right half, 5 the centre half and 6 the left half. 5 Therefore the is the old school centre half number.

Same with the number 9 being the centre forward, as 7/8/10/10 were outside/inside left/right forwards.

When I started, keepers had a plain shirt... RB was 2, LB 3, CH 5 then wing halves were 4 and 6. Inside forwards were 8 and 10... wingers 7 and 11, CF 9.

Then keepers got a 1..... Everton were one of the first to fuck about with this, when they had John Hurst who wore 10 and played at the back or as a DM.  Think it was after Italia 90 that  squad numbers were introduced... and I lost interest in who wore what.  Still couldn't tell you what any of our players since wore, as their significance became irrelevant.
