He's recovering from an injury/surgury/something.

 I still can't understand why we're offering contracts to the likes of Yaser. 

However the new manager, now has 9 weeks before the first fixture, to recruit and sort out  a more or less complete new squad,  fitness regimes, organise friendlies, etc
