I think the urban myth has always been that it's easier for a club to coach an athlete to be a better footballer, but you can't easily get a good footballer to grow another 6" or get drastically bigger or stronger.

Whether that is actually the attitude taken by academies, I don't know.

Not just youth, pace can cloud the judgement of a seasoned manager. Eric Sabin managed a reasonable career based purely on pace and being able to fall over in the box.

The impression I have of academy footballers is technically they are mostly very good. But that technique is only part of being up to lower league footy.

Ive said it a million times.  Academy footballers all have great technical ability which is something that can be taught but no brain which is harder to teach. 

They come down to our level and can wow us by taking on 4 players with flicks and tricks but the end product is nothing.  If you look at the players who are forging a career in higher leagues after being on load with us it ones who have been allowed to develop, and learn to become a part of a team.

Amusingly Joao Felix who the football world are getting all a lather about at the moment was released from Porto for being too small and rocked up at Benfica who are selling him at 19 for £105m after only 33 first team games!

I actually thought last season that there were several players on the pitch who had plenty of ability but totally lacked a footy brain.  Good coaches can instil a certain amount into them but once you cross that white line they seem to forget it.

At this point in 2018 only McGlashan had arrived. Alzate and Adebayo followed during the first days of July.
