Branco was a scapegoat for a poor midfield, if you hit a nut with a hammer 100 times it's going to crack eventually, and that's what it was like with our defenders, for the season before last and up until January, the defenders had very little protection from the midfield and were under constant pressure, Branco wasn't the most talented player but he seemed to  improve once Ince came in, Conroy next to him also seemed to settle him.

He put way more effort in than players like Boo so I am a little sad to see him not offered a contract but the new manager coming in will have nearly a clean slate to work from so he can't blame the tools he was given.

Cannot imagine he was on great money, didn't we get him from non-league (Whitehawk)?
We did but he signed an improved deal in 2014 including a wage rise after his first season with us when several other clubs were interested in him.

Yes he tried.
Yes he improved.
Yes he probably got undeserved stick compared to others.

But more importantly

Yes he was a liability and not good enough given the amount of game time he had over the last couple of seasons.

I was frustrated by the way opposition players would head towards the byline, gliding past Branco on their way, before cutting in to the penalty box.

Something similar happened during the Liam Sercombe equaliser against Oxford. It was like we were already 3-0 down.

He will inevitably sign for Crawley and score against us in the last minute.

Yes but hopefully it will be a consolation goal in a 4-1 town win Wink

Branco was not a bad replacement when injuries and suspensions kicked in.
Surprised he has not been offered a new contract.

Branco was in the top 3 earners on the playing staff, we cannot afford to have such a wage being paid for a player who is nothing more than a "squad player", makes sense to let him go, although I agree he would have been handy in the squad but I don't want us to rely on him, he needs to be a 1st team player somewhere to improve further.

If you offer a new contract then you have to pay more. Far better to let it run out, hope no-one else is interested and then maybe offer them reduced terms.

If that goes west, then pick up another player from non-league...

Top 3 earner, now that surprised me. Fair point then, must go.

Power has made it clear that Alex Davey a centre back who is being released by Chelsea is high on our radar who is 2 years younger and has played for Peterborough and Crawley on loan and had several trial games for our U23 side.

That is if Power is stil in charge of recruitment by then....

Understand the logic, but sorry to see him go, bit of a cult hero in our family. Although I think we always preferred the legend to the reality Smiley
