AVG is good but sometimes conflicts with my BB
I use anti - vir and I have a major problem with it at the moment where I cannot remove a trojan, so probably not the best one to recommend.
I would plump for AVG being probably best of the free ones

avoid symantec/norton like the plague, there are better and cheaper options out there. AVG is good but basic, i recommend NOD32. you can't just rely on anti-virus software, make sure you use something like ad-aware, ccleaner or s&d spybot

I use all the other three that sonic suggests as well. All free.

not sure, it should...it wouldn't be worth a jot if it didn't.
i know NOD32 scans all incoming and outgoing email.

AVG does include a pop3 mail scanner, so yes.

I use Zonealarm and it seems to do the trick, although only the firewall version is free unless you know how to get hold of the full version without paying.
