It's my 17th in just under 2 months. I'm just beginning to think about what car to get. Any ideas? Obviously nothing expensive, or a huge engine. Something small and smart.

You'll probably be looking at your usual Saxos, 106s and Fiestas for that budget.

For a first car you wanna be looking for a low insurance group mainly as on my 1.3 clio TPFT it cost me £1,300 to insure it. Dont get a french car for starters, if will cost you more in repairs than what you paid for it, unless your gonna fork out and get a new one. as from previous experience and i know a lot of people who had the same issues with Renauts and Peugeots dont get one unless its no more that 5 or so years old Milage is also something to look at the lower the milage the better obviously If your looking for a car with a budget of 1,000 its gonna be atleast 8/10 years old so if you want something semi-stable you wanna look for probably a german car or similar A VW Polo or maybe even a low spec Golf would be ideal http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/www/cars/VOLKSWAGEN/Ne-2-4-5-6-7-8-27-44-49-53-61-64-67-103-133-146,N-13-29-4294967159/advert.action?R=200737294493382&distance=1&postcode=sn34ds&channel=CARS&make=&model=&min_pr=&max_pr=&max_mileage=or a Vauxhall Corsa http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/www/cars/VAUXHALL+CORSA/Ne-2-4-5-6-7-8-27-44-49-53-61-64-67-103-133-146,N-13-4294966945-4294966969/advert.action?R=200741296134017&distance=18&postcode=sn34ds&channel=CARS&make=&model=&min_pr=&max_pr=&max_mileage=Ford Fiesta are normaly good first time cars http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/www/cars/FORD+FIESTA/Ne-2-4-5-6-7-8-27-44-49-53-61-64-67-103-133-146,N-13-4294966400-4294967194/advert.action?R=200739295681240&distance=10&postcode=sn34ds&channel=CARS&make=&model=&min_pr=&max_pr=&max_mileage=or just get one of these http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/www/cars/PORSCHE/Ne-2-4-5-6-7-8-27-44-49-53-61-64-67-103-133-146,N-13-4294967213/advert.action?R=200741296259517&distance=1&postcode=sn34ds&channel=CARS&make=&model=&min_pr=&max_pr=&max_mileage=Also look out for when the tax/mot's are due. Make sure they atleast have had a recent MOT coz the last think you want is buying it and having an MOT done and finding out things are wrong with the car

and because it will be and oldish car you want one with cheap parts available - Ford and Vauxhall are normally good for this. Bits on my first car (fiesta) were cheap as anything.

My first car cost me £200. A mark 1 golf. 1982. Cost me £700 to insure TPFT. Had it two years. Only needed one tyre in those two years. Did about 1000 miles. Sold it on for £200. Absolute gem of a car!
