A few people have asked and I keep meaning to do this, so here goes.

Avatars are the small images below people's names on the left hand side of the post. This can be an image of whatever you like provided it's not larger than 120x120 pixels and below 29kb.

Firstly, we'll start with how to resize pictures. You need an appropriate program to do this and I personally use IrfanView which you can download here. Once installed, you open the image you want to resize and go to Image > Resize/Resample then enter the size as below then click OK and the image should be 120x120 or whatever size you entered. Save the image using File > Save and put it somewhere you'll be able to find it.

Once you've resized the image, you have two options. You can either upload the image to this server or link the image from your own webspace or wherever you found the image. The latter is the easier provided you have somewhere to host it, however most people don't so uploading it is the best option. To do this you need to click Browse... and find where the image was saved, select it and click open. Once you've done this, the path to the file on your computer should be displayed in the bit next to the Browse... button, click Submit and provided the image isn't too big it should work.

The alternative is linking to an image on another site. For example, I have a few STFC avatars uploaded here. Choose which avatar you want to use and right-click on it and choose Copy link location. Go back to your profile page and paste (ctrl+v or right-click > paste) into the box next to Upload avatar from a URL. The text should appear in this box and then you click submit, but again this will only work in the image is 120x120 and less than 29KB in filesize.

Does that make sense? I hope it does.
