good advice ben.
i'd like to add that the price quoted is infact half what you should pay.you must tip the driver the exact same amount as the price he tells you.if not he could get very angry and take you back to where you started.taking the fare from you first of course.

Completely true Arriba.

You should also offer the taxi driver some hay. Again, this is from the time when Taxi's were pulled along by horses. The driver doesn't actually expect you to have any and won't accept, but it's a politeness thing. You don't want to get blacklisted by taxi drivers, they pass on information between them in secret code. If you piss off one of them then you'll never be able to get a taxi again.

A little known fact is that they used to have sedan chairs before taxis were common place. Usually for the gentry.

Upon leaving hosts for the journey home, the phrase "chair - ho" was used to summon the transport.

This has become the well known phrase "cheerio" in modern times

(that was one of the first useless facts I ever learnt)

I got a taxi from Calne to Goatacre.

Yes, but that's bandit country, not the sprawling metropolis.

stfc_dave, would you mind letting us know how much the cab costs please?

i think perhaps we could create a database of taxi fares, for future use.
