....how to recover files off a bad floppy disk? I've tried loads of the 'freeware' recovers but none have worked. Somebody left some uni work on their for our group but has gone to Mexico til Jan - Deadline is Friday  I even told him to email me "just in case the disk breaks." "You cann't rely on technology I said...." Jinxed it really didn't I? |

The problem you've got is finding out if the data is recoverable or just knackered. by the sounds of it the data is beyond recovery if you have tried a couple of programs. most software which you can get will use the same system to find and recover the data, if one can't see its unlikely that you will have much luck with the others.
best bet if that doesn't work is breaking into your mates house, stealing his pc, guessing his password or taking his HD out and putting it one of your pcs and copying the data.

Cheers Whits, didn't work in the end but managed to salvage an earlier copy that had been overwritten. Apparently the formatting in XP (esp SP2) is different to older versions and can screw up disks!
Microsofts solution - reformat using XP. That's fucking useful Mr. Gates you bastard - I have to delete the files on it to do that!
So I would just like to say to microsoft :fu

GET IIIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN! Managed to re-format and retrieve the file. Word converted the data somehow so some of it slightly weird but all I need to do is delete those bits as the actual work is converted correctly  Cheers Whits for the link - that program didn't have a gay 'one recovery per day limit' so I could try as much as I liked when i got bored! |
