When task manager is open hold down ctrl + alt + shift and press enter and it will display the menu and tabs Sorry Si Pie, got sidetracked last night. That didn't work either, nothing happened when I did that, no menu and tabs etc!

if you say you have no tabs on your task man, you have probably double clicked on it and hidden the tabs, double click on the outer edge of the task manager box and see if they come back.

Sort by memory usage (by clicking on the header). Which ones are eating the big chunks?

no no no. most will be system programs that run all the time. You need them. Generally speaking you should be able to stop the ones under your username, but google the image name first to make sure you don't need it

Thanks for all your help everyone, much appreciated.

but they are still running in the background as you have discovered. If you are using windows XP, set a system restore point and fuck about to your hearts content.
a reboot should fix any problems you get from this, but it's best to be safe
