When we went there was a woman in the front row he decided to pick on, and got ripped apart at various points in the show. She seemed quite tipsy though and was quite mouthy. Head down and don't make eye contact!  Smiley

Very sad news - London Astoria closed last night - I was at the legendary Tad/mudhoney/nirvana gig there in 1989 - makes me feel very old!  Sad

I've seen loads of gigs at the Astoria the last few years, one of my favourite venues in London.

Tis a shame it's closed, being knocked down for a new train line or something like that.

Cross rail system.  Its been talked about or years and the staff have been living under the threat of this happening for years.  Feel very sorry for the people who work there who are now out looking for other jobs when the live industry is slowing down.

The Astorias owners are, as I understand it, going to replace the venue with another one in central London, however it will not be the same.  Mind you it did smell terribly of piss in the alleys around there.

The new venue definately won't be the same, and i know what you mean about the live industry, there's definately not as many gigs around at the moment, you can see that everywhere. It's a quietier time anyway this time of year but there was a lot more around this time last year.

Only the big artists are selling out now (like Killers, Kings of Leon, Take That, Oasis etc) and the middle artists are struggling to sell out venues, so the poor staff at the Astoria will struggle to find something.

At least i have the memories of most of the gigs i've seen there.

I work in the industry and last year over jan and feb had 24 gigs.  This year I have 12 booked in.  I think that it will pick up, just the quiet times will be quieter.

I have stacked it down the stairs in the Astoria a ridiculous number of times, so I for one am glad that my favourite acts will no longer be frequenting this death trap of a venue.

It shoudl be a listed building - wasn't it where Hendrix set his guitar on fire? It should be preserved for future generations and have a brown plaque placed on it like other random buildings where famous people from history stopped by for a cup of tea or whatever

Jimmy Carr was good - sitting on the front row is weird - there was a bit where he was sat on a sofa right in front of us and hes like looking at you when hes talking - its quite odd - he looks a lot older close up than he doesn on telly! luckily he didnt pick on us - he did pick on the man next to me though!

Did he call him a pikey cunt? That seems to be Jimmy Carr's favoured insult.

Did he? Must've been a warm up show for a new tour or something then.
