Always avoided Ride for some reason. Can't think why.

If you like Shoegaze then Slowdive are superb, for that reason the Reading roots are forgiven.  Smiley

Just listened to their album and really liked it - slowdive that is.

It always bugged me that Swindon never produced a decent band during that era.
Oxford,Reading and Bristol all produced era defining acts yet we had to live on former glories of XTC.
Mind you,we had the best football team at the time so it didn't really matter  Cool

XTC are a better band than anything Oxford has produced in my opinion. Partridge and Moulding were a fantastic songwriting duo.

Saw Ride on Monday at their hometown gig at the New Theatre.

Awesome,in the traditional sense of the word.
They still make an incredible noise with out losing sight of a good tune.
It's been a while since I've heard a wah wah pedal too.
Last time I saw them was Reading Festival in 1992 and I'd say they were better now.
The band all look pretty much the same as they did then, apart from Mark Gardner who has completely lost all his flowing locks.
Andy Bell signed off by saying "we're the Shoegaze Beatles,Goodnight"

I was there too...it was some night, wah wah indeed.

However, I don't think I've ever been to a gig with such a peculiarly defined demographic:  I'd say 95% were between 45-50...it was a giant Zodiac 1991 reunion, and all the better for it.

I saw them last year at the Anson Rooms in Bristol.  You are right, it was a very specific demographic.  I saw 2 members of my old band, 3 people I used to go to gigs with and get pissed with between 1988 and 1994, one of the people I worked with at a restaurant in Bath from 92 - 94 and 3 girlfriends of our old band.  One of which is now my wife.

Don't get me wrong,I love XTC.
Not as much as I love the Dukes of Stratosphere mind.

True
I was surprised to see so few young people there,as I thought Ride were quite an  influential band.

Saw smith street band in London tonight. Great band for lovers of sweaty, guitar driven music with platitude and cliche lite lyrics. Very good gig, and even if pretty much every Aussie in London was there

They even have a song which ends with the refrain 'things get better but they never get good', which is probably the most fitting summary of being a Swindon fan I could ever write

In fact thinking about it, the Ride demographic was so precise that our little group of three were all born within two months of each other - clearly the League Cup spring of 1969 bred a fine vintage.

Off to Hatfield house tomorrow. Levellers, show of hands, Kate rusby and a few others. Not seen levellers. Should be a decent day out. Good line up for £35

Not to my taste at all but some of you may like to know The Script are playing at the Oasis on the 25th August.
