Try this little program - it's quite useful

http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,5431-order,1-page,1-c,alldownloads/description.html

Open the program, Go to 'Window' and then 'Health Log'. It'll tell you if you've got problems and what to do about them.

nothing listed in the health log

It could simply be that the router has a better firewall built in so less packets are getting through.

Have you tried using the modem with the speed test? How different are the results?

What ISP have you got? It might be that you can't get the full 8mb in your area (the problem I have). Nothing to do with your hardware if this is the case. It could also be that your ISP caps the speed in peak times, when loads more people surf. My internet speeds up loads after midnight.

If your ISP has got more popular then the contention ratio may have got bigger i.e. more people through each exchange. If the exchange has a rate of 200mbps for 50 users, then obviously getting 8mbps each would be impossible.
