Yes. He unearthed some truly great bands (who may never have got a break otherwise), these went on to influence new bands and so on...

The music scene today, IMO, would be very different if it were not for him.

Someone mentioned eclectic, spot on. From The Fall to Happy Hardcore via Pulp last night.

You can't get more eclectic than John peel. World music followed by drum and bass followed by a 4 second death metal track from Sweden followed by a crackly old 78, bit of reggae, then an obscure indie band. Safe as fuck.

I actually found out he'd died when I read oxford fa's rip john peel post on thisis.
