I watched "The Kid" on Sunday night and have to say it was excellent, I enjoyed it a heck of a lot more than I thought I would. I got me wondering if anyone else enjoys the art of the silent film, and in particular the talent of Charlie C, or do you think it's a load of over rated 80%-age.
Think I might give Modern Times a go tonight.
I've watched a lot of silent stuff and I suppose it's a bit of an intellectual exercise.
I did once see Chaplin's first non silent film...The Great Dictator in an open air cinema in Southern Spain. El Caudillo had only just died and there was still a sense of uncertainty about the place, it was the first time Chaplin's great satire had been allowed in Spain.
About half way through incendiaries were being lobbed into the cinema and there were explosions ...the locals started panicking and running out of the cinema. I thought I'm British, and wont move, just carry on watching the film.
It soon became evident that it was no more than local
Ironsides fascists chucking fireworks in.
Spain has come a long way in the intervening years.
