I didn't include any from the last ten years as compared to the 80's cup finals they were all pretty crap.  Get your point with the Everton/Utd match though big shock as utd were doing so well at the time.

This is not open to debate.  The best Cup Final ever is 1987.  Coventry 3 Spurs 2.  FACT!

After about 1992 or so, all the Cup Finals just started to merge into all the other hundreds of live games shown on TV and to be honest, the Cup Final is just another game these days.  Anyone who tries to cling on to the belief that it's anything more than that is kidding themselves.

I think the Play Off Finals (in all divisions) are better occasions and definitely make for much better games.

OST is of course right.....in the 70's and 80's when the Cup Final was one of a handful of games on the TV....I'd make a day of it....with a few mates, all day drinking including compulsory pub crawl....bookies, always end the day with an Inder.

In recent years I don't necessarily even bother watching depending on what else I'm doing.

Of slight interest is that WHU v Preston which is the PO final is the first Cup final I can clearly remember watching.....and that was a cracking game.

Liverpool vs Everton 1986.

Seeing reds and blues helping their mates climb the twin towers into the stadium with jumpers for me defines the height of fandom in this country. In terms of a big game you cant get any better than two local rivals from Englands premier footballing city (controversial) in a FA cup final when there was no European football to play for. 1989 was overshadowed by Hillsborough.

Its the first cup final I remmember. Just awesome. Although Coventry - Spurs probabky was a better final.

Id say the FA cup final was the biggest sporting event in this country until 1994. After the 1999 epic semi at Villa park it seemed as it might get back on the rise. But the United pull out later that summer did ruin the Cup as THE top sporting tournament and it still has to this day.

Thing was it went silly because football was 50 years out of date and when you get that it inevitably swings the other way. Maybe after 20 years of football getting more and more and more sanitised then there will be a swing the other way again? But I doubt it. The powers that be are too powerfull now.

The Chelsea v Middlesborough one where di matteo scored that amazing lob within a miniute. This was at the stage where I liked Chelsea as much as Swindon cos my dad used to be a season ticket holder at the bridge in the 70s
