You could set up your new gmail account, then go through your old emails and forward the important ones to yourself.

Dunno if there's an easier way.

Use Outlook Express or something similar to download all your emails to your PC and then delete them from the old mail account. Create your Gmail account and add that to Outlook Express. Then move all the old emails in to the Gmail inbox in Outlook Express and it should upload them all and keep it in sync.

Gmail is an IMAP email system, which basically means all your emails are stored on their server and then your email software (such as Outlook Express) keeps itself in sync with it. Send an email, move an email from one folder to another or whatever on Gmail or Outlook Express and the other will update accordingly.
