How on earth do i find out if i am being/have been taxed and paid the correct NI contributions?

I'm wishfully thinking that I'm due a £2k rebate but have no grounds to base this on apart from pure hope. It would be nice after all.

When I was at HMV I paid about £10 tax and £8 NI out of my measley £150 a week wage. Where I am now I pay £40 tax and £20 NI on a weekly paypacket of about £250. It doesn't seem to equate. My current tax code is 522L.

Muchly thankyous.

Without looking up the real accurate figures - (alright, I did a bit)

Annual salary                    £13000
Personal Allowance               5220

Taxable                                 7780

I'd say you should have paid 10% on the first £2230   (£223)
and 22% on the remainder                                           (£1221)

total of  £1444 tax  or about £28 pw

National Insurance looks about right (11% of difference between £87 and £250)

Of course this will all depend on whether it's a full year, whether you tax code changed, and a whole host of other concerns. It's also based on 2007/2008 tax year. As you may well be aware the 10% and 22% rates have been replaced by a single 20% charge

On that basis, the £1444 charge becomes £1711, £33pw

Can't see where you would get a figure of £2000 overpayment from when you're only paying £2080 tax in the first place - NI is rarely calculated incorrectly for fairly ordinary employment situations

Hope that helps
