am i right in thinking that its only the outer layer that is damaged, and that the cd data below remains in perfect condition? as i'm skint are there any household items i can use to 'fill in the gaps'? or what else is best, should i have to resort to spending?

If it doesn't play then you may still be able to recover the data (Music) using something like Magic Iso on your PC, then Rip it and make a new disc. Rather than paying out again for something you have already paid for.

nope still plays alright with the occasional skip. i've got a few cd's like this, and they tend to be my favourite, most played ones. just wondering if a bit of polyfilla would smooth my listening.

I thought you could buy a special kind of wax that you rub onto the affected areas and then you'd be able to burn copies.

Bit of brasso works. Rub from the inner ring to outer across the disc very gently. Then backup your copies.

I need to get round to copying some of my dodgier discs, especially as I have a cd recording deck.

Oh, obviously rinse off the polish after too and leave to dry.

Apparently toothpaste works as well!

I recommend something called Cd Doctor or Disk Doctor or something, can't remember the exact name, but bought it from PC World for about £20.

You load a CD/DVD in, cover it in some chemical and turn a handle, it then scratches off all the damage. It looks fucked when it's finished, but the CD/DVD is back playing as god as new afterwards.

I've used it on loads of things and it's amazing. I did manage to break mine though. Although that was because someone walked on it though, not because it's shit.

Here's a link to it on Amazon. Although it looks a bit more modern than mine.

We've got something called a DiscGoDevil at work, which I'm led to believe takes off a layer of the CD, making it playable again. Takes two minutes and afterwards you spray the cd with the stuff I sometimes use to clean my glasses, and wipe it all off. Hey presto. Its a free service to me but to the public its £2 per disc. If you're desperate enough to pay to save the disc then try your local Blockbusters and see if they have one of these contraptions.

I used to put toothpaste on scratched cd's, obviously wash it off and dry and it should then be ok again.

Read about it in a magazine a few years back.
