I think that you can park for free on the high street after a certain time. Certainly on the bit opposite Queen's. Possibly not on the bit nearer to Carfax.

The parking bays there obviously get full quickly though. You can almost always find a place on the road leading down to St Hilda's though, just over Magdalen bridge, and turn right at the roundabout into a small side road. I think that might be free parking during the day time too.
