It's live video streaming from your phone that anyone else with the app could watch, so I could go on and see someone from New York streaming their walk to work and so on. It links with your twitter account, and shows you followers etc.

I made a periscope once after watching how to make one on Blue Peter.  You just needed some cardboard, a couple of mirrors and some sellotape.  Simon Groom/Peter Duncan/Janet Ellis era.
