http://www.livinggloucester.co.uk/histories/monasteries/llanthony_priory/When delivering to Gloucester yesterday i was in for a nice suprise, after dropping some sheet metal off i headed for the sarnie shop around the corner as a 45 min break was imminent for my tachograph. Anyway as i headed back with a latte and chunky doorstep cheese, onion and coleslaw butty i notice this old doorway(second pic down on the link) and sheepishly walked through it,i was blown away as when i walked in and through the old trees i was met by centuries old English/Welsh heritage of the grandest order. The 5am start and stressy day melted away as i sat in the sun and took in some old Gloster history, the tacho break over ran which is a rarity for me,the fact that it was surrounded by trees hid it from the new College next door along with the obligatory Sainsbury's superstore next door also, you could say a secret garden of Ye Olde Gloster's past.

Nice little story, Leefer. There are some hidden gems around, sometimes where you least expect them. I used to travel around the UK a lot with work, and even if you don't get to stay that long anywhere, you still get a good feel for the place. It's a shame the weather in this country is usually so appalling. I truly think it has some of the best history and countryside in the World.
I've just been watch A History of Britain and now I fancy a trip to the Orkneys. Not sure anyone else would be up for the drive though. I've also said I'll take the old man to stay in Shrewsbury(where I'm from) for his birthday, so we can go to Wroxeter and the Iron Bridge.

Absolutely indisputable Amir. I've been all over the world over the years but I am perfectly happy to have a week or two in good old Blighty. This September me, Mrs Taylor and a couple of friends are renting a little place just north of Berwick Upon Tweed (just into Jock Land) and I can't wait. I look forward to checking out Lindisfarne (never been to the coast of Northumberland), going to a Berwick Rangers game, maybe a day trip to Edinburgh and some beautiful old country pubs and who knows what else. Loving it. Leefer..what sort of truck do you drive? Seriously. I love trucks. I'm not taking the piss. Secondly, do you call it a truck or a lorry?

I currently drive a rigid(class 2) mercedes curtainsider, have been for a while.(18 ton) While having a class 1 licence also i wont drive them again(artics) Tend to call the smaller ones a lorry and the bigger class 1 vehicles a truck, dont know why really. And Amir,Shrewsbury is a lovely little town with some great old beam buildings.

Shrewsbury's beautiful. Possibly my favourite away trip ever was to Shrews. It was when we'd already clinched promotion in 95/96. I went up on the train with the SSILA boys (as they were then known). We found a pub in the middle of Shrewsbury where, amazingly enough, the landlord was originally from Swindon. The real ale was absolutely fantastic and for about the only time ever, I seriously considered staying in the pub and not going to the game at all. Happy days.
So. Leefer. Is your 'lorry', a 4 or 6 wheeler? Why would you not drive artics again?

http://www.rbiassets.com/GetImage.ashx/379137589/merc-wgd-004.jpg/mediumThis is it. Arctics are just to stressfull to drive, basicly you get no home life, most arctic drivers are out monday morning and back friday night, not all obviously and there are some good numbers but the big distrubution centres make it a hard game now. With mine i am usually back by tea time with just the occasional night out.

You'll get Billy Shears on here soon. (He's from north Shropshire.) I spent 3 years just north of Shrewsbury as a kid in the late 70s/early 80s. A lovely part of England.

I have to say, I was driving me and Mrs Taylor home from Gatwick on Monday night and we were going up the A12 past countless laybye's with (obviously) loads of trucks parked up and I was thinking , "I would really love to drive a big fuck off truck but I would really not enjoy the prospect of sleeping in a laybye. Not to mention the possibility of being woken up at gun point by some Latvian gangster inviting me to empty the contents of my trailer" Not my idea of fun.

I've been pretty much all over England / Wales and a bit of Jockoland but this is the area I'd really like to go to. Edinburgh is nice if you stick to the square mile - outside this and its shit - big drug problem.

Edinburgh's my favourite British city (the square mile bit, not the Irvine Welsh bit)
