Originally I didn't know he started out as a serious actor. Saw him in Airplane, Naked Gun and all that stuff. Then I saw him in a film before he started doing comedy. Kept waiting for the laughs and they never came. Very disappointed.
No matter how many times you watch Airplane it is still funny, same with the Naked Gun films. Classics.

Airplane! is 30 years old. Bloody hell.
Anyway a fine comedy actor is no more. But at least he had a reasonable life. RIP.

Fitting line for this month.
Priscilla Presley: "....It was a white guy, mustache, about six foot three..."
Nielson: "That's a pretty big mustache”

When I watched Airplane the first time I thought I recognised him, but couldn't remember where. It was only after BBC2 did a season of classic Sci Fi films that I finally got to the root of it: he was the captain of the spaceship in Forbidden Planet!

Leslie Neilson. Funny as fuck...FACT!
It's weird to see him playing the Captain in the Poseidon Adventure as a serious role in one of the very films that the Airplane films sought to rip the piss out of.

It's weird to see him playing the Captain in the Poseidon Adventure as a serious role Yet as the wave crashes into him and his crew... I still laugh. Jane, since I've met you, I've noticed things that I never knew were there before... birds singing, dew glistening on a newly formed leaf, stoplights. So long Leslie Neilsen
