Delighted to help. I went there in 1986, and it's possible some details have changed since.

Kiev: The restaurant out at the race-course is marvellous. Great war museum. The girls are stunning. They hate Russia. Short on oil. Last two things possibly related.

St Petersburg: People roasted rats during a two-year siege in the war. Thousands died. All buildings a shade of ochre. Odd columns on the river with boats sticking out of them. No-one would swap my Bauhaus t-shirt for a Soviet flag. Bastards. I think they thought Bauhaus were German, or else they hated Northampton. Wipe their bottoms with French grammar books, which does two jobs in one go.

Hope that helps. xx

St Petersburg is great, and most of the things you'd want to see are quite walkable, although the Metro is useful and cheap. The Hermitage is really great. I'm not a big art fan but it was really great to look around it. Also, a day out to Peterhof is recommended if you have the time and will to travel out - a beautiful palace! As for food there's a big mix. You can get your standard European stuff, including pizza restaraunts such as sparro and burger joints. If you do find yourself fancying a burger, avoid McDonald's and head to Carls Jr - it may be American rather than Russian but its so much better than any other burger place I've been!

One other thing to mention is that St Petersburg is a bit of a city that never sleeps - many things are open through the night. The night-time boat tours are also good, as they take you to the main drawbridge (I forget the name) as it opens at around 1am.

I went on a school trip (seriously) in about 1984. The main tip I remember is don't cop off with the lass from the 6th form with the massive rack in the fond belief that your girlfriend who's on holiday with her parents won't find out about it or that it somehow doesn't count because you're in the Soviet bloc. What goes on in Kiev apparently does NOT stay in Kiev. Or St Petersburg for that matter.

I'm in no doubt I'll be called a pedantic something or other who has no life and no friends who everybody hates - all true, by the way - but is Kiev not in Ukraine?

Kiev is a nice Town, very friendly people and some great sites. The Chernobyl museum is very moving as well.
