I know a lot on here don't watch/like egg chasing but growing up watching rugby Bill Mclaren was to rugby what Murray Walker was to Formula 1. Remember him always being so unbiased in his commentary.

RIP

I read his autobiography a few months back.  A true gent, by all accounts.  Shame he checked out just before the Six Nations, but sure he'll be watching from on high.

absolutely gutted. Probably the best english language commentator of any sport. as Bob said, totally unbiased, even if it was Scotland against England. He just loved the game.

There'll be no dancing in the streets of Hawick tonight, but I daresay there will be plenty that raise a glass to the great man.

Bill Mclaren and John Arlott, probably the most descriptive commentators there have ever been.

RIP Bill.

RIP Bill.

There's a few sports that have or have had a commentator, who becomes the voice of...
sadly though they seem to be a dying breed, and not just literally.

Darts.....Sid Waddell

Boxing....Harry Carpenter

Cycling....Phil Liggett

Snooker...Ted Lowe

Golf...Henry Longhurst/Peter Allis

Cricket...Richie Benaud

Horse Racing....Peter O'Sullivan

Show Jumping...Dorian Williams

Wrestling - Kent Walton ?

You missed Murray Walker as well.

Good point Reg, but I think the lack of this type of commentator these days is

a) driven by the celebrity/personality trend
b) you don't seem to get solo commentators now, more summarisers/'experts'

I think Waddell has become a parody of himself these days.

I missed Walker, because BO mentioned him, and it seemed pointless to do it again. I can see what you're saying about Sid...but you'll miss him when he's gone.

Bill McLaren, RIP, a man of many talents and personal qualities but I would say, uniquely, unbiased in his international commentary and therefore appreciated and respected by all
