Is there a way to download an embedded video from a website (not a major one like Youtube etc) and convert it to a format that isn't .swf?  I know there are some websites that convert it for you.....ideally I dont want to download any software.

Why not just download it as .flv and play it with VLC player?

You can always add the Firefox addon DownloadHelper, download with that and then convert with Prism, which is freeware.
