...but no mere dictionary! I'm looking for one from anywhere between 1936-1943, for an essay I'm going to be writing. Anyone know where I should be looking for such an old dictionary? Do libraries have them? I'm thinking my best bet might be charity shops, independent bookshops or elderly relatives. Or if anyone has one they wouldn't mind selling me, I'd be very appreciative.

I looked on ebay for 1943, then remembered that I could look from 1936 onwards - have just found this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Universal-Dictionary-Of-The-English-Language-1936_W0QQitemZ120338872491QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAntiquarian_Books_UK?hash=item120338872491&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1301|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318 tho its little pricey. Mucho gracias guys.

when my gran died in 93 for some reason we ended up with all her books which im sure included some really old tatty looking dictionaries. No idea if we still have them or what year they are from but will have a look.

generally librarys should have them. my girlfriends doing a literature degree and is always diving into old ones for essays, her uni always seems to have them or they can request them from other libraries...
