What a fucking ace weekend I had, went to sofia for my birthday with my old man, cracking city, dirt cheap, people really friendly, on the sunday afternoon went to watch one of the sofia derbies (there are 5 teams in sofia)...
The ground was a real soviet era shithole, totally delapidated, probably holds 20,000, no floodlights, all the windows smashed in, shit pitch, but my god what an atmosphere. There was probably only 5000 there, and that was split 50-50 between away and home supporters. Levski are the bigger club, it was probably akin to Tottenham V Brentford. Me and my dad were in the home end, next to the loko ultras. Fucking hilarious. Smoke bombs, flares, rockets and bangers thrown at the pitch, the singing did not let up for anything, there was n o pauses for the whole 90 minutes. Only down side was the ignorant monkey noises at a couple of black players.
Best bit was when loko scored everyone ran down the front and tried to tear down the fences
. Riot police with full helmets and shield outfits stood and watched. Plus first time ive ever seen a water cannon at football!
