I'm going for the Cowon iAudio X5 60Gb (or X5L = 30Gb but much longer battery life). The sound quality is supposed to be far superior to anything else. You can play ogg and flac formats and are not bound by those bloody ID3 tags that itunes insists on. You can just drag and drop folders from your pc without using any proprietry software.

PS. Use Jetaudio. Its pretty nice
thats all very well but my few seconds of research reveal it costs £300 and i'm a relatively poor student

Look harder young man ! I found one for $255 US. Add a shipping charge and you'd be able to get it for less than 200 ukp.

still too much, i don't want to spend much over £100 if possible

spending anything means going more into my overdraft, so got to minimise it

Wait for a little bit as the Creative Zen Vision: M is just about to be upgraded to a 60Gb model. That will probably result in the 30Gb being reduced in price.

The Zen Vision: M is touted as the best all round hard drive mp3 player on the market. Its video screen is better than the Ipod.

The things I don't like about it is that if you look at it it scratches and it doesn't play flac nor ogg. Furthermore, it insists on ID3 tags.  If I can't get the Cowon at the price I want then I'll get one of these. I have a Creative Zen Nano Plus and it is pretty damn good.

If you want to know more then go to www.epizenter.net or www.iaudiophile.net. There are lots of geeks on there that appear to know lots.

Two last pieces of advice:

1. You gotta think about what you want to do with the player. If you want to store loadsa albums (and use it in the car maybe) then go for a hard disk. If you wanna jog around, use it at the gym or while you are active then go for flash media.

2. Batteries: I'm happy that with my Creative flash media player I can replace the batteries. It takes one AAA which lasts a fair while ! If you get some of the larger flash and hd players, they come with an integrated rechargeable battery. How long do those last before they don't hold a charge and you have to throw it away ?

How about this one (the upgraded version of one I have had for a couple of years):

Fits your price range with some change to spend at the County Ground !

1. decided i don't want a massive one like my old ipod because i always change track with so much music at hand. so i'm looking at 2gb storage, 1gb is too small and anything over 2gb is a waste as i'm going to have to cut down my portable library drastically considering i've got 40gb music.

2. as i used to have an oldish ipod, nearly all batteries are going to be an improvement on what i'm used to.

don't like the look of that creative.

Gay. I've run out of string. The Mp3 decryption process is prooving to be a nightmare. I've used 53 paperclips allready and I must only be halfway through. Think the display might end up a bit limited for the prototype model.
