Wireless Network Help

Right, I've just set up a wireless system and have read nothing that shows me how to stop other folk from nabbing my connection. I know it's something to do with WEP or WPA or something.

How would I (an idiot) go about fixing the network settings to stop the thousands of other people in my apartment building from being able to hi-jack it and get free email through my connection?

Anyone know/have any idea?

What sort of router are you using?

You need to encrypt it in the settings usually found in the admin panel.  

ust make sure you mak a note of the password and follow the instructions so you don't lock yourself out.

Firstly, in your router there will be an option to only allow certain computers. Set it up by finding the MAC address on the wireless card and adding it to the allowed list

Next set up encryption by creating a password in the router. You then need to configure the card to use this password as well. Hope that helps

erm... OK.

I'm using a NETGEAR modem/router (all-in-one gizmo).

I set it up using my laptop (we don't have desktop in the flat) and it all works so I unplugged the Ethernet cable and now we are all able to get on the net using the lappers.

I assume that I am the admin for the network? How does one go about getting into the router? And my wireless network card is a built-in one if that makes any difference...

Right it's probably easier for you to just set up the encryption.

In order to get into the router you need to find the router's address and type this into the address bar in your browser. Usually it's 192.168.1.1 but it could be something different.

As for the admin, you'll need a password to change settings. Usually the password and user names are just admin/admin.

You're a genius Mr Pieman. That's all I had to do (except the password was 'password') and then just click a box. Now it's password protected and I can use the internet on the pooper. The wonders of modern science!
