Title: IPad problem
Post by: The Artist Formerly Known as Audrey on Tuesday, October 11, 2022, 15:07:12
Recently I have been getting a cloud symbol appearing next to some of my apps on my iPad screen.

When I tap the app it goes to download but soon a message pops up saying ‘unable to download’.

It’s taken Facebook, Gmail and a few other apps out and I can no longer use them. Even if I delete the troublesome apps I still can’t re-download them from the play store.

Anyone got any ideas?

assume you have enough storage space free?

Likely to be storage of pics, videos and apps on your home screen. Delete apps you don’t really need and either upload to the cloud all your treasured pic and vids or do what I do, fucking delete them.

I’ve deleted all low use apps, cleared cookies and data from Safari so there should be no storage problem.

I can access Facebook from their website - not that I use it much. I’m just worried that eventually it’ll happen to apps I rely on.

Suspect this is going to be an issue where the Apps now require a later iOS version than you have, particularly if it's an older iPad - mine got to this stage after about 8 years or so!

What version of iOS are you on? Check in Settings > General > About

It is an old iPad which can be upgraded to IOS13.

Probably the problem then.

I'd certainly start there if you want to fix these apps, although for my iPad at least upgrading to the newer iOS tanked the performance (Apple insist they don't do this deliberately but...) and led to me having to buy a new one. If it still works for what you want to use it for then maybe don't upgrade just yet!

Facebook has a minimum os requirement of 13.4

https://m.facebook.com/help/4530565140314947 (https://m.facebook.com/help/4530565140314947)

Gmail looks to be 14.0

wiki says "Support status Obsolete, because all devices that supported iOS 13 support iOS 14 and iOS 15 as well. Widespread third party app support. Drops support for all A7 and certain A8 chips, including the iPhone 5S and 6/6 Plus, and iPod Touch (6th generation)."

so you may get an upgrade path all the way to 15. But warning about performance is fair. might be worth a Google.

I have an old Ipad 2.

Loads of music on it.

Message comes up asking for a new IOS. Cant get rid of it...frozen the thing.

Old laptop gone kaput.

I would like to use it just for music rater than connect it to the web as i have got an Android Tablet now.

Whats the best advice....do i have to take it to an Apple shop....i know its old but it would be a rather expensive paperweight!!

It's just frozen on the pop up message and you can't switch it off?

I've had similar with an old phone, see if you can force restart it - https://setapp.com/how-to/reset-ipad#force-restart

Otherwise you may need to wait for the battery to go flat and then charge it back up, if you haven't already been through that.
