Title: Wimbledon v Swindon Town 17/4/21 Matchday Thread
Post by: The Artist Formerly Known as Audrey on Saturday, April 17, 2021, 02:31:08
‘Bout time we reverted to a proper thread title!

I imagine an actual football match is on the back burner of many people’s minds with all the shenanigans.

Like most I’ve given up harbouring any league survival hope, saving all that for club survival.

How did it come to this? (Rhetorical)

Though I think we have all given up, I wonder if the fact that its definitely 100% a must win will change our mentality and approach - go for it, do or die.

Then I remembered. Sheridan.

Any mention of admin sets the alarm bells ringing.
Doesn't always work out even when there are interested parties, just look at Bury and Macclesfield.
In our case I'd expect that the greed of the owner would ensure that a sale favourable for him went through.
As fans, any alternative options that LP wouldn't be keen on might be better for a healthier club in the longer term.

Will don the Trust STFC shirt when watching today.
Hopefully the chilli sauce stains from the accompanying large mixed grill kebab will wash out.

A visit to a new ground is always an occasion in the away day calendar.
Hope that we are both in the same league next season.
The new place certainly looks like an improvement on Kingsmeadow with the poor viewing and smelly away end.

Would expect our L1 status to be laid to rest with a minimum of ceremony today, but also wouldn't be surprised if there was a restoration of some hope come 7.15pm.

Kids TV in the 70's was good fun.
This lot could do with making a comeback, assuming that their burrows haven't been sealed away by the volume of rubbish dumped in the last year.

A dull one nil loss with their goal coming from our unoccupied right back position as a dedication to Reg.

First game of the season I'm not going to bother with. I will look for the score later this evening but will only give it a cursory glance and a muttering ffs.

Fuck you Power.
Fuck you Sheridan.

This is the least interested in a Swindon game I think I have ever had, it all seems irrelivant at the moment. Lack of interest, lack of effort, just lacking.

Very similar - Paid for the rest of the season. I can't see where the next goal is coming from. But I can see where the next defensive mistake will occur. I think we will lose. Probably go 2 goals down and then huff and puff and flatter to deceive while Wimbledon keep us at arms length.

I just want the season over and the off field issues sorted so that we can start afresh next year - Probably in L2.

The fact that the promoted teams from L2 are languishing in the bottom half of the table suggests that the standard of football in L1 is better after all.

Or perhaps Wigans' players prefer a manager who doesn't prepare his 'tactics' as such

Not disagreeing but, in the case of STFC, I would say that our L2 squad and manager were superior to this year's class.

Agreed but Crewe/Plymouth suggest that somewhere around 15th would have been the likely final position for that squad.

You're forgetting  Wigan in your calcs. If Wombles win, they go to 45 but Wigan will be still on 44...ergo 7pts and a shit load of goals from safety, not 8pts :)

And if Wimbledon win, the first place out of the relegation zone will be Wigan on 44. Eight off Wimbledon, seven off Wigan. Might as well be 400 off both for all the good it will do us.

With a new regime in mind and so on. Would anyone fancy a punt on Dave Challinor as new manager?

Absolutely ripping it up with Hartlepool and I watched admittedly only a handful of their games but they also play (for that level) some decent stuff. You know, actually put it on the floor and play football kind of stuff. Did well with Fylde as well too.

I know it would be yet another manager from the North West but I reckon he would do alright here. The bigger question would be, would he want to come here?

I have seen worse quality STFC squads but they had fight and you could see the manager was trying to put things right.

Sheridan is the worst manager and you can see the team do not respect or believe in him..
He has stripped them of any fight and they are just going through the motions

But he will solely blame the players full stop...

Poor old Tommy will have to do the post match interview again with Hawes!

Naa, if you notice JQ...that stupid fucking mancunian wankstain cumsplodge excuse of a manager ALWAYS does the post match interviews when Town play away. He doesn't have to run away and hide from Andrew then because he can do it all on Skype/Zoom/FaceTime and if he doesn't like a question he can just cut off the video call.

This is the pinnacle of our recent 'efforts'. This is beyond pathetic with next to zero redeeming features. Stupid clumsy penalty, absolutely ridiculous defending for the second, could Lyden have tracked his man any worse? And then a comedy third which is no more than they have deserved.

Pointless at this stage of the season but Sheridan cannot stay after this can he?

The worst thing is is that absolutely nobody is being held accountable for this season, it's been a complete and utter disaster from every single aspect with the most hateful, spiteful manager we've ever had to endure.  Burn it all to the ground and start over.

Grant's worst game of the season.
Broadbent all over the shop.
Grounds fucking useless
Lyden not in it.
Palmer took a corner! Contributed fuck all else.
Payne ran a bit.
Twine dived and took 2 shots. One good and the other bad!
Pitman won a few headers and clogged a player.
Smith has ran into dead ends
Caddis didn't do anything wrong. Assume Garrick came on to be more attacking. He had a chance that he didn't take.

Fucking Camp has let in 3, let the ball go throw his hands, been lucky when be was 'fouled' but has been head and shoulders our MotM so far!!!

Just caught up on this thread late on through the the first half - my observations from the match and this thread:

We are utter shit and have now added "can't be bothered" to the usual ineptitude and shit management.
I didn't think it was a penalty, but it doesn't really matter.
I thought the 3rd was offside, but it doesn't really matter.

So, lets try and review that without laughing.

Yet again, we throw together another formation, move a bunch of players around, put out a small team and lump the ball forward giving the ball to the opposition on a consistent basis and hope for the best.  not going to work out well, even if we had better players, you can't just keep chucking shit together like this and expect anything else.

Lyden looks unfit to me, think he's been risked as a last throw of the dice and it is not working very well at all.  He can barely get into a jog let alone run.

Grounds is the only player I will single out based purely on his effort - he's just strolling around the place and occasionally flinging an arm around.  For a player who has had a career above this league he is a fucking disgrace.

Overall, another game where we were set-up to fail.  We look a mess, the players have lost all confidence, have no consistency in positioning, no idea how they are expected to approach the game and then you see them mentally fall apart.

Power and Sheridan, take a bow, I've never seen a pair turn a professional football club into such a farce.

He's not single handedly dragged this carcass of a side out of trouble, no, but he's shown a lot more class than anyone else we have with some of his passing and shots. To be honest his recent drop off feels like him trying to do too much as he feels like it's him or bust.

I think top end L1 scouts and Champo ones will rightly look at him as a rough diamond who could be available very cheaply. In a better side and well coached you have to think there's a decent player there.

Twine hits crossbar. Smith takes an age and finally puts it away.

4-1
well that's going to help the goal difference !!.

He has been shite...

Even if he does get a move to a L1 or Champ team , he'll spend the length of his contract in the u23 or sporadic sub appearances before being released.....

He is a good L2 player no more.....

Good thing you're not a football scout

Harsh, Ivan Toney, for example, at the same stage of his career had done basically fuck all.  People write young players off way too quickly, a 21 year old Ronaldo didn't look like he could become what he has even.

Twine is suffering from the 'One of our own ' Tag

Did nothing of note on loan at non league teams..

Had a good half season at Newport and suddenly he's a world beater ........

I remember the last player that got that tag, a certain Tom Smith......who many tagged as a player we should build the team around....

There was a meltdown when he was released and joined Cheltenham with many saying it would come back and bit us in the ass, ...where us he now?

Yes Twine shows promise BUT he is nowhere near Championship standard and in terms of L1 would not be a first choice player......

Post by: Nomoreheroes on Saturday, April 17, 2021, 18:46:23
Difficult to judge that. I think I have been generous with my marking.

Camp – 6
-   Handling didn’t look great before the first – Ball went through his hands in the first minute. Then a couple of good saves and claims. A lucky ‘foul’ then little he could do with the 4 goals that were interspersed with some decent saves. Lucky when Thompson (with his best contribution of the day) saved him when the ball ran across goal. Camp looked very slow, but Thompson saved him.

Caddis – N/A
-   Sacrificed in order to bring on Garrick. Presumably for an attacking option. Didn’t think he did anything wrong.

T Broadbent – 3
-   Slow, lumbering, out of position. Glad he was substituted

A Grant – 4
-   Worst showing of the season. Poor distribution before the game was lost. Gave away the one goal by playing player onside. Kept trying to be cute and got caught out several times.

Grounds – 3
-   Gave away penaly. Didn’t mark for second goal. Bloody awful.

Palmer – 3
-   We lost the midfield in the first few mins.

Lyden – 2
-   If he was fit then he wasn’t trying. Very poor game. Won nothing and lost everything

Payne – 4
-   Ran around and tried. But no one to play with.

Twine – 5
-   Two shots in the first half. One in the second which hit the crossbar and Smith scored from

Smith – 5
-   Scored a goal. Didn’t do much else

Pitman – 3
-   Won some headers in the first half. Nothing in the second before substitution

Subs:

Garrick – 5
-   Not a defender. Caught out for one goal. Looked better when up the pitch.

Thompson – 3
-   Saved one goal when he was trying. After that, he kept running up the field and jogged back. Fourth (I think) goal was his fault. Just ambled back when he realised he was beaten and out of position. One good game and nothing since. Getting worse every day.

J Grant – 4
-   Couple of dribbles. Didn’t really provide an attacking or defensive edge

T Omatoye – 5
-   He had a couple of decent touches. Not sure why he hasn’t had a chance. Not the worst player on the pitch, but not the best – They wore blue. Had one headed chance, but it hit him rather than him heading it.

Hope – 3
-   Gave us none

Speaking to Kyle Knoyles Dad this afternoon.
Having a cracking season and interest from clubs higher up the pyramid.
What concerns me if we get stuck with journeymen like Grounds and players like James Dunne next season. We need a Manager with a style, a plan and works with players.
In fact we need everything.
This season an absolute disaster and can only imagine the atmosphere if we were at the games. The standard and style on the pitch equally the worst up there with Hart and Jimmy Quinn when we didn’t have a pot to piss in.
It won’t be like this forever though, just need to bottom out as soon as possible.

Presumably this was something you cannot listen to if you live outside of North Wiltshire?

Who gives a fuck, if he's gone that's good enough for me,   might be harder to get rid of the other twat though.

They said it would be on Talk of the Town later. Usually comes out about 10-11pm. Guess it might be a bit later this evening with the later finish

One of the few saving graces of this absolute burning car crash of a season is that most of the fuckers are out of contract at the end of the season so a new manager can at least start with a clean slate. Assuming he has the budget to do so of course. And assuming he is appointed before July - if all the off-field shennanigans drag on, it could hold up making any new appointment.

Better late than never.....

Sheridan:
- Similar to a lot of performances
- Brilliant opportunity to take the lead
- We just cant defend as a team
- We make so many little errors that lead to silly, cheap free kicks and corners
- You can see little things creeping into the game to give them a chance
- Could have been 6-3
- We've had some very good chances
- I have to look at myself. Whether I picked the right team
- The players need to look at them selves.
- I'm going to 'em...I'm going to 'em....Have a break now.
- Even for my health. It won't do anyone's health any good when we get beat week in week out
- Its not right the supporters or for the club
- I felt 5-6 games ago there was a chance and we could have turned a corner
- We could string a few results possibly get 5-6 points away from the bottom 4
- But we went the other way
- There are too many things happening week in week out
- I'm going to give it a rest
- There are one or two people would will be pleased. I'm sure a lot of people will be pleased
- Its football. I just seem to be saying the same things every week
- I've spoken to Paul Jewel. I'm going to talk to the Chairman
- I'm going to resign. I felt like it 3 weeks ago.
- I do care about football and I do care about Swindon (voice was breaking up a bit here)
- I came here expecting to do really well
- Injuries and not keeping a settled side haven't helped. I don't like to keep changing things
- I look at my position. Its a difficult thing to do
- There are 4 games to go
- Hopefully someone can come in and work a miracle
- Where has it gone wrong? We have been inconsistent. Consistently we haven't done things well enough
- We have competed well in some games. But we have conceded so many poor, poor goals
- We give so many opportunities for team to cause problems
- Players being injured and we havent had reserve fixtures, so players come back unfit
- We havent got enough points or kept t he ball out of the back of the net
- I get on well with all of the players
- I am demanding on a saturday on the pitch
- I look at myself and hopefully t he players look at them self
- Ownership is nothing to do with it. Its sgoing out on the pitch and having the right mentality
- We are the quietest team on the pitch. The opposition give more help to eachother than we do
- Advice to successor? Every manager is different. I dont think my advice is good enough
- I know I can manage and I have been a good manager in the past. Player injuries and loans havent worked out. I've messed around with the defence and the goalkeeper too many times
- There are lots of things that I could go on about, but its time for someone else to have a go
- January window: Wouldnt say anything bad about the club. Had 100% backing from Jewell and Power
- Tried to give my best. Always knew it would be difficult
- Players and myself have to look at ourselves
- Jewell reaction? It was a short conversation on the phone. Made it clear to him in a short conversation that I'd like to go.

The whole post match thing wasn't broadcast on line. The only bit in the Talk of the Town link was the Sheridan interview.

Read the commentary.

Wimbledon blokey blocked Palmers shot before slotting past Camp.

Originally I couldn’t work out if the Dons played had a scored an 80 yard screamer or whether Matt Palmer was trying to shoot from inside his own penalty area. Obviously it was neither.

That was the worst performance of the season and the bar is extremely low. Absolutely appalling effort from the players in what was an enormous 6 pointer. That said, it was hardly surprising giving what is going on at the club.

Hopefully we can at least put in a shift in the last few games and end the season with a glimmer of respectivity now we can finally accept we are down.
