Which ever way you look at it, this won’t be easy, but it can be won.

to be honest I wouldn't blame Johnny Smith for doing a Max Power on Sheridan if the opportunity comes

I am not looking at this as a must win, but as someone else said - it's a must not lose if we want to keep them in the mix

I hope we actually go for it. Keep it tight and hope we take the chance before they do is so risky

Question is do we continue with the Iandolo experiment at the back? No idea how Burton play but if they are a team that looks to get down the sides and in behind then I would be more than a little concerned as we know defending against runners isn’t his thing.

I feel sick about this. I just can't see where we are going to get a goal from. But I can see how we might concede one or two.

Can see us reverting to a 4 at the back against Burton, playing a right footed player (probably Hunt) at left back to counter Johny Smith cutting back in on his left foot. Grounds to come in alongside Grant in Central defence with Odimayo at right back. Palmer and Missilou central midfield with Garrick and Payne out wide and Twine playing off Pitman. Caddis, Iandolo and Thompson, -who were all fairly poor against Blackpool- missing out. So a 451 or 4231 or 442 however you want to see it.

This, totally.

Burton haven't won in 3 games after a great run but look a way better team than the one we thrashed earlier in the season.

Can't see past a defeat still though, we don't creat enough scoring chances.

Come on Swindon prove me wrong in winning this despite, rather than, beacuse of the tactics.

Burton 3-0 Swindon.

Talking of last day showdowns to stay up, I remember one around 1981 or 82 where we were at home to Brentford and needed a 0-0 to stay up.
it was incredibly tense, but a dire game. in those days goalkeepers could pick up back passes, and we passed back from anywhere within our half of the field - we must have managed at least 50 back passes in the first half. I recall David Peach was at left back for Swindon, and he alone accounted for about half of those. it was also the days fenced sections of terraces, and there were a couple of empty areas between home and away fans. For some reason there was never a ball boy in those empty cages - presumably to avoid the risk of them being the target of missiles from away fans in those violent times - so by the end people stood near us on the Shrivenham Road side were shouting at our players to kick it into the "cage" to waste a few seconds.
Hopefully it won't come down to that on may 8th this year!

Remember it well.
A few Brentford thought it would be game to stand in the Shrivvy Road stand and taunt the TE.
They didn’t realise a fair few Swindon had gathered behind them and they soon dispersed.
Was a real nervous tense game.

That was when Roy Carter missed a penalty with almost the last kick, I think, and that would have kept us up.

No matter how Sheridactyl sets us up you can be assured of another 90 minutes of pure garbage.
Just hope we only have to endure this tedious shite to the end of the season and before we can come back to watch it.
Only knows what it will feel like tracking back from the most outer Northern posts after a showing of everyone behind the ball and hit and hope to an isolated player that can’t move.

Today is a hard one to predict as we're now nearly in the can't afford to lose situation as defeat today and against a free scoring Peterborough on Saturday will leave us close to the trap door. Sadly 2-1 to Burton

After a pretty decent performances vs Fleetwood and a half decent one vs Rovers we were brought pretty firmly back to earth against a decent Blackpool, a game I didn't think we would win TBH, but after Sheridactyl saying we would take the game to them, as we did vs Fleetwood, we actually did anything but that.

1st 20 mins we did fairly well and matched them and even had a couple of chances, then we sat back and let them onto us without barely a whimper of complaint from us, wave after wave of them outpassing us and we didnt get a look in, inviting them on when we were told we would be the team attacking by the man.

If we sit back today against Burton they will beat us, simple, we don't have the players to sit back and invite teams onto us and hit them on the break. We look best when we press them high up the pitch and stop them having all the possession and all the ball with us constantly chasing it setting up attack after atttack.

Under Jimmy Flloyd Hasselhoff they are playing more of a passing game with a lone striker in Hemmings with 2 wingers and a free role number 10 and 2 defensive midfielders in front of a back 4, again similar to how we lined up with a back 4 before we changed to the 3 CB's.

I have a feeling we will bring Grounds and possibly Missilou back today and change the shape of the team.

If we set up to press them and pass the ball on the ground I think we can get a result, if we sit back then they will beat us, simple.

Agreed, not going to use Blackpool as the yard stick, as they are fairly decent. But it's hard to disagree we had large periods of being disappointing and passive.

I don't think we can afford to lose today. it's not terminal, but we need to keep as many in the relegation mix as we can.

it's going to be hard. going to hope for a draw

Still hope to be able to make the pilgrimage to Burton, the capital of brewing, next season.
Cooper's Tavern, what a great pub, just like walking into someone's house and beer straight from the barrels stacked up in the back room.

Can't see a third away win on the trot.
A point would be ok but there is no reason to show any fear of our opponents today.
Payne and Twine, if selected, will need to be a lot more prominent than they were on Friday.

Don't think that this will feature in the dressing room playlist.
Go on BP you can do it, you've got one job to do so just let the rest of them do the running.

Obviously it’s a big if but beat Burton today and results below us have a slightly lesser impact and next Saturday they are away to Pompey. Ok we have Posh but you know at this stage of the season strange results are not the exception to the rule. Also the Gas have to go to the Cobblers when we play Posh.

Here is every pre game comment from the Brewers forum....

Quote
Lost 2 v 0 at Blackpool yesterday but had beaten Bristol Rovers and Fleetwood in two previous games.. Fighting to avoid relegation.... expecting another tough game despite their position below us... The team with the fewest draws in the division.. just 4..

Under the management of John Sheridan. He resigned in March but was persuaded to stay - a bit of a new manager bounce as a consequence?

Had a look at their message board. Sounds like if you get the ball wide and attack them then they struggle. Obviously with him being an ex loanee of theirs all eyes will be on Jonny Smith. Also seems their CBs tend to get bullied easily so it could be Fondop who starts tomorrow.

One change from the Accrington game. Bostwick in for Earl.
Earl and Broom replace Varney and Gilligan on the bench.
Sheridan has named Matt Palmer as his captain today much to the confusion of the Swindon fans as Brett Pitman, who it looks like is there usual captain, does actually start.

I just want the season to end - relegated or not. It’s shit in the extreme.

If there’s no new regime to start next season everyone can fuck right off.

You are not alone.
Completely underwhelmed with everything STFC right now. Just a simple case of seeing it through until we bottom out. No idea to how further we will fall mind you with Lee Power against the ropes.

Imagine starting next season in league 2 with Sheriden & Power at the helm....

Trying not to think of it Jimmy, just fills me with dread.
Will hold onto the season ticket money until more transparency and understanding is known.

Would it be less stressful just to switch off from all things STFC unit August then?

Go for a walk in the Greek sun, come back have a beer
I’m 66 a week today. If next season starts with Power and/or Sheridan, I’m out.

What's worrying is prolonged court cases mean we could be stuck with Power for another season or two

My main takeaway from this season has been that sensible rational team selections seem to go wrong and when Sheridan does something flat out mad it seems to somehow work (once or twice), such as Broadbent up front and Iandolo CB. So perhaps Palmer will have a stormer.

I've paid my tenner, shit all else to do today.

I must say, I've always been quite keen to have JFH in charge here. Mostly because I loved him as a player, but I think he's a decent enough lower league boss too.

They had 3 pages on matchday chat from Saturday!

I know they don't have that many fans and a forum that is not as well populated as this one but 4 comments pre game is at a Salford level.

Sheridan is just throwing Spaghetti at the wall in the hope something sticks.  His default appears to be a football by numbers approach - just send people out in positions and tell them where they need to be, not to hold on to the ball and get it forward.  His results have all tended to look like the result of a panic change - the players have probably received very little instruction as a result and play more on instinct.  You can see this in a player like Thompson who looked a class above in his first game when he was just sent out to play a position.  It all seems to go pear shaped once they work on that for a game or two though.

On the JFH thing, it may be just a bad perception issue on my behalf, but the Dutch players always seem far more intelligent.  Like they are scholars of the game.  Listened to Scott Parker yesterday, after Fulham collapsed, and he could barely string a coherent sentence together in his analysis.

As I have said a few times previously, I think we are winning games despite Sheridans tactics not because of them.

Garrick seems to be a one-half player, so it might be a good ploy to bring him on second half to create havoc.  Hope so.

Oh I wasn't under any impression that Sheridan was playing 4D chess. There's just enough randomness around this season that we can never quite write off a game. Here's hoping for another absolute shithouse win.

We have a couple of these, for different reasons.  Garrick is all pace and little else, so in a short spurt he can worry a defender but over time they can figure him out.  Payne is also a one half player at best, but a better one.  He has no self control and runs around like a school kid.  It means he can be very good for a short burst but seems to knacker himself out as a result.

I'm sure they'd say we're keen to highlight that and are going down fairly easily. Ref seems more of the let them play variety which favours them in these circumstances you'd think.

Probably because wonder strikes are our only real plan.

Both teams look terrible out of possession.  Their midfield is passive, letting us do what we like in some unknown fear of us getting the ball forwards.  Our defence looks like it will be beaten to every ball into the box.

Two bad teams creating a match in the balance.  Someone has to get the word out to stop playing balls out when clearing - their main threat is from long throws or balls into the box.  For this game you are better of just lumping down the middle.

Someone needs to tell our team to get the ball down and play through the middle - they are letting us have the ball and dropping off when we do that.

Missilou played well. Went through a period of looking very strong and winning everything then tricks and flicks and precision passes. But, is spending a lot of time playing with his weave! He and Palmer were dragging the midfield too deep to defend towards the end of the half.

More of a handful for Caddis. The fact we haven't got Garrick playing right wing means Skins can spend his time attacking rather than defending. Bring on Garrick for Thompson, push Twine left and we might carry more threat.

Not unhappy with that half. Caddis struggling but Payne and Missilou holding their own and Grant and even Grounds looking pretty solid. Bit wary of their attacking down the flanks but really no reason why we can't sneak a win

Agree with this. I assume they must be going through a bit of a slump as I don't see where that incredible 10-match (or whatever it was) run they put together came from on the basis of what I've seen so far. Although they're a lot better than they were when we beat them back at the start of the season.

Immensely frustrating. We've played much, much worse than that this season, but it's another loss. We were probably the better team in open play, but always looked vulnerable at set pieces. Easy to say in hindsight, but today was a Tom Broadbent game.

Payne, Missilou and Twine all looked good in the middle of the park and Caddis looked much better second half playing almost as an old fashioned inside right than he did in a more defensive role in the first half.

The first 20 minutes of both halves I thought we played as well as we have done for ages. But we're past the point where good performances are worth clinging to - today we needed points, we got none and we didn't make a single substitute until injury time. We don't really seem to know what kind of goals we want to score, other than occasional Twine/Payne brilliant long rangers. We simply don't score "system goals" - it's all one player's brilliance or a mistake from the opposition.

Need six points from Wimbledon and Rochdale, no negotiation now.

A complete waste of an opportunity - it as obvious that they were sitting off our midfield yet we continued to knock it long to Pitman who never had another Swindon player within 15 yards of him with a wind behind us so it was impossible to control.

For the second half, given the amount of space they were giving us, and Caddis was able to play right wing as they feared the wind and just wanted to get into a shape, an early change was needed.  You didn't need three centre halves to mark one forward, get a bit of pace out wide and start playing the ball through the midfield.

unlucky that. decent enough away performance that didnt deserve a loss. the style of play has definitely changed for the better, some good pass and move football and we created a lot of openings today. shame about the 2 goals conceded, almost the same as the sunderland goal.

again the same as last week, the fact that everyone else seemingly lost (except rovers- who have the worst fixture list)  is a positive. cant be too disappointed with today did their best

Sheridactyl should have made subs earlier and also should have brought on Garrick against their awful left back who couldnt even handle Caddis's lack of pace.

Caddis played his best game in ages against him, Payne ran the show for me with Missilou playing easily his best game in a Town shirt.

Undone by headers in the box, as always, against a stonger bigger team.

Deeserved at least a draw but thats football, especially when you have a fucking clueless cunt as manager.

Meltdown avoided, everyone else is just as shit as Town, except for the anomaly result of Barton Rovers who had the audacity to beat Donny. All that does is bring them back into the realm of "tight as a Nun's Chuff" territory.

The biggest winners today are Burton - who instead of potentially getting dragged into a relegation scrap (had Town won), now look like they have allayed their own fears and secured their L1 (Div3) status for next season.

I've said it for a while now. It's going down to the last day. It's going down to GD. IF Town do manage to score one more than about 4 other teams, can they in future walk out to "Vindaloo"  :hmmm:

PS: Special mention to Johnny Smith, he played very well. Who would think a creative midfielder could bring something to a game?! Shame he got injured. 7.5/10

Camp 6
-   I thought he could have moved quicker for the first. Just before that he seemed to stop and watch one go out of reach. But then in the second he got down to one that was similar. Pulled off a decent save from Smith in the first and another in the second.

Thompson 6
-   Defended well and saved us on a couple of occasions. Whipped in a couple of crosses in the first. Didn’t offer much up front in the second half and was offside when he could have.

Grounds 5
-   I thought he kept playing us into trouble in the first. His headers plopped the ball in the middle of the park for Burton to pick up. He was soundly beaten by his man for the first goal as he didn’t jump!

Grant 6
-   Looked untroubled. Didn’t seem to do much wrong, but didn’t see his positioning for the second goal.

Odimayo 7
-   I thought he played well. Defended well in the first half and looked solid at the back and offered a threat going forward in the second

Caddis 7
-   Was in trouble playing deeper and defending in the first. In the second he was a revelation playing further forward. Offered so much threat, but started to tire towards the end. If only he had Garrick to link with towards the end

Missilou 6
-   A game of two halves. Played really well in the second, with flicks, tricks and strong challenges. Must have tied his weave too tight at half time as he seemed back to normal in the second half

Palmer 6
-   Frustrating player as he promises so much at times, but never quite delivers. Played a couple of glorious balls, but didn’t grab the game by the scruff of the neck, other than for very short periods.

Payne 6.5
-   Fantastic goal! Got in some good positions and ran his socks off in the first half and the first part of the second half. I thought he tired towards the end.

Twine 5
-   Frustrating game. Some gorgeous balls, showing excellent vision. But, went to ground too easily as normal and wasn’t going to get anything from the ref who was letting play flow. Didn’t really get into the game enough

Pitman 4
-   Didn’t win a ball in the first half. Had 3 clear chances to score – Headed wide, no connection for an open goal and a third that escapes me from the first half I think.

Subs:
J Grant & Smith: One touched the ball once and the other didn’t!

Hartley:
- Defending at set pieces cost us today
- Had opportunities to put Burton under pressure for 20 mins in second half
- Pitman, Missilou and Payne efforts could have resulted in goals
- But didnt take chances
- Gave away one too many freekicks in second half.
- Should have learned from first half as both goals were very similar
- Finish from Payne was cracking. Ball that led to it from Twine was superb.
- Quality of passing in midfield was as good as it has been for many a week
- Crosses and final balls were poor.

Yes, taken by Johnny Smith, which presumably doesn't count as end product...

(On Smith, I can't quite get why people are so determined that he's either an underappreciated Messi or stealing a living. He's a perfectly average L1/2 winger/attacker. He'll have bad days and good but there's some talent there.)

Sheridan
- Usually disappointed. Massive opportunity to take 3 points
- Something that we have worked on (their goals)
- Should deal with it a lot better
- Totally dominated the game after Payne's goal
- Beaten by 2 goals where players should know how to deal with it
- Massive 3 points lost
- Passed the ball, took care of the ball and looked after it
- We defended well other than the two goals which were diabolical
- Other than 2 goals we played well
- Tired of explaining himself. We told them what to do. They went out onto the pitch. Gave too many cheap free kicks. No hunger to defend properly
- It was their strength. Sheridan could see it coming
- Cheap free kicks result in balls coming into the box
- In the final third we should be creating more
- Massive 3 points weve given away
- All games are massive games
- Thrown 3 points away. Could have gotten closer to Burton
- Disappointed
- Throw in when clearing the ball. Too many free kicks. Sort fouls
- Subs: So on top of the game, we were controlling it.
- Basic defensive mistakes. People should do better. They know who should do better
- We did defensive training. Told them who was a threat yesterday
- You can blame the manager, but we told them who would be the threats and they were the 2 who scored goals
- Will take good things out of the game. There were a lot of good things. But, its the same old story, you are going to lose games if you keep conceding goals
- Overall we were in control of the game
- If we didnt win we should have got a point
- Iandolo injury? Hamstring.
- Will have to assess him. Looked a bit sore.
- Pressure? We have ups and downs. We've lost the game but the performance was good
- We will have up and downs. It may go to the last game
- We should have won the game and took 3 points.

Hartley part 2:
- All have the same feeling
- Opportunity wasted
- Passed the ball well
- Possession stats were good
- Used the ball well. But couldnt get it into the box
- Physically they were strong defending
- Sheridan name checked someone who did their job wrong twice and they scored both times (Grounds I think)
- No team in bottom 6 who have as tough a game as us on Saturday
- Need to go to Rochdale and win. That would make Wimbledon game crucial
- Getting something against Peterborough would be a bonus.

Grounds:
- Disappointed
- Worked on it yesterday
- Knew set pieces were their main threat
- We have been good between both boxes but haven't been ruthless enough in each box
- How come 2 similar goals were conceded? Gave away too may cheap free kicks and throw in.
- Need to stay on our feet. Clearances should go longer and higher! (What???!?!?!?!?)
- Not mentally and physically strong enough 1 vs 1
- Dealt with throw ins ok, but not the wide free kicks
- Only positive is the 80 yards between box to box
- Moved the ball well but not got enough people in the box.
- Payne lovely finish
- Talked at half time about moving their block around
- Today was a massive opportunity missed.
- In the ascendancy at 1-1
- Have to go to Peterborough and try to get something
- Then a massive week against Rochdale and Wombles
- Quiet in the dressing room
- Young dressing room
- We have let people down by not doing what we were told to do yesterday.
- So everybody in that dressing room need to ask if they did enough today. Only individuals can answer that

Think today proved that Sheridan’s subs and tactical changes in the past are nothing but baseless punts that have yielded the occasional result. Today was crying out for Garrick second half and not bringing him on just shows he generally doesn’t have a clue.

I think we will go down as I don’t believe Sheridan is capable of keeping us up due to a combination of his tactical ineptitude and petulance in selections.

We already knew this.

Really? I thought he was very very poor with no end product today.

No end product, that's seems a bizarre assessment mate...he got an assist and made a bit of a nuisance of himself. Not lots more you can do as a midfielder in that sense. He did his job as a lower league midfielder.

Also those saying it is to do with his Dad posting on here. What a bunch of cunts you all are. Once again, taking one part that I wrote in isolation and using it to say i'm being controversial. Get over yourselves.

Midfielder gets assist = TEF definition "hE dIdN't CoNtRiBuTe".

As I've said before, several people on here respond purely to the account posting rather than the content of the post.

Hartley part 3:
- Likely 4 from 6 go down.
- Burton probably out of it. They only need the odd point
- If you take Pitman off you may gain something attacking, but you weaken the team as he is important for set pieces at both ends
- Final ball was missing
- As Grounds said, 80 yards between boxes was good
- Garrick is not an out and out striker so isn't a good swap with Pitman

Hawes:
- Hamer and Brayford cards marked: Not every team can defend
- Manager exceeded Mourinios efforts yesterday saying we prepare players!
- Ground said that individuals could only look at them selves. Seemed odd. Very interesting. Evading whether he thinks they do or not.
- A bit of a concern if the players dont think they can look at themselves
- Bad goals to give away.
- In terms of throwing on subs. We've seen Garrick up front and it didnt work
- Could have put Hope up front. But, when in control of the game, why would you?
- Iandolo injury. Grounds was one of the better performers today.
- Rediscovered passing game today
- If we play like we did today they that might be enough to stay up
- Deserves to be a mighty inquest on what has happened this year. Recruitment, management etc
- How does Paul Jewell work? Are there plans for L1 and L2 next year?
- Should we have had a succession plan for Wellens going? Yes, we should. You can never trust managers to hang around. When they do well they move.

Hawes has gone a bit potty if he thinks Grounds was a top performer today.  He was defensively weak on multiple occasions, not only was he constantly heading the ball less than 10 yards away in the middle, he even managed to jump under one ball in the 2nd half.  At fault for one of the goals, maybe the second.

Knowing who is a threat and where the threat may come from is one thing, having a plan to deal with it another.  I saw nothing other than marking players going on, nobody stood in front of the throw in taker, nobody pushing the line further out, nobody double marking that threat etc.  There wasn't anything you could see that was out of the ordinary - none of those may have worked, but just using it to show what bollocks Sheridan talks.  Shouting at people to defend, not give away a free kick, get it forward, move etc. is hardly adding much.  He's basically Captain Obvious with a foul mouth.  Every week it's the players fault - different players, different positions, but always them.

Agree with general consensus that we could have got something out of todays game but we didn't.
'Being in control of a game' that we're losing doesn't really help in the grand scheme when you lose at the end. Would we have created more with Garrick brought on as has some have suggested (I personally think yes) we'll never know because our manager and his assistant didn't roll the dice until too late. They really do not have a clue.
I have seen us play as bad or even worse over the years but this season has to be the most frustrating. The two games won most recently we pressed more than the whole of the rest of the season but Friday and to a lesser degree today we go back to defending ten yards too deep giving opportunities for the set pieces we do not seem to be able to cope with.
Don't know why but we'll probably against all expectation win next week just to ramp the frustration up. Then we will have to beat Rochdale and Wimbledon, and we'll need to take them on as oppose to just trying to live with them. Will we do that ? We're capable but will the manager let us ? I have my doubts. Even now God knows how but we still have a chance.

Can’t believe we’re still out the bottom 4. The bottom 6 are awful and burton aren’t a lot better. Still expect at least 1 team to go on a run and surprise everyone, but it just hasn’t been happening. Could be one of the lowest points ever in League One to stay up

What’s really depressing is if this is the standard of league 1 this season then what is the average match in league 2 like to witness. Paul Mullin scoring 29 and counting in the league points to the standard being far worst than last season and it was pretty dire then so I dread to imagine what we will be subjected to next season.

Decent Managers have a sense of game changing decisions.
Second half for 10 minutes we were technically better and what did Burton do, they changed it as could sense we were on top.
At that time we could have exploited their defence, they looked ponderous but we did nothing.
Could have made 2 changes. The lump up top was not influencing the game in any way.
Garrick and even Hope if we were brave may have changed it.
Both free kick goals defenders and keeper have to do better.
Yes we have played worse which makes today even more disappointing.

Blame goes to one person today for me, the dinosaur.
Did fuck all and paid the ultimate price.

Our game in hand on Rovers could be a right liability. At the moment we are ahead of them on goals score as both teams goal difference is the same.

Lose our game in hand and we’ll drop below Rovers. If we get thumped against Posh it’d be like losing another point, too.

This is the problem with games in hand when you're at the wrong end of the table, you tend not to win them. But the teams around us are just as shit and look at what a vast difference two wins made a couple of weeks ago.  We may yet still do it but the time for "not a bad performance just didn't get the points" is long gone.

We should have got at least a point today - Burton are a poor side, and had no threat apart from free kicks, corners and long throws. Unbelievably as it doesn’t normally happen under JS we played the better football today, but didn’t defend well enough and didn’t take the few clear cut chances we have.
I think the wind may well have impacted today - their keeper’s long clearances were creating problems for us in the first half, in the second we over hit some balls and their keeper barely reached half way.
Contrast Yates on Saturday with Pitman and you see the difference a decent budget makes. Yates has pace and movement and holds the ball up / links play. Pitman is ponderous, can’t really press the opposition, and today missed the clear chance he had.
I’d also agree with those who would have brought Garrick on at around 65 mins to go for the win at 1-1.
It’s looking tough now - with Peterborough, Portsmouth and Ipswich at home, I can’t see us getting more than 3 points there, and probably less, so we’ll need to take a minimum of 7 from Rochdale, AFC Wimbledon and Wigan and something from MK.

The fat lady ain't singing yet...

Let's not forget it wasn't that long ago we were bottom of the league. 2 wins on the bounce and we were flying. We've lost two matches and back to 'the inevitable'...

C'mon, we've all been here before. Look at the bigger picture, there are plenty of games left to go!

I see have Swindon surviving with 45 points... Wigan, Northampton Rovers and Rochdale going down in my prediction table. IMO, it's between Wimbledon and Wigan for that final relegation place. It's going to be Alex Ferguson squeaky bum time though!

I usually spend my Monday morning's (obviously Tuesday today) reading through the matchday threads as the comments during the game (with my hindsight trousers on) always make me smile. So I'm going to offer my thoughts on the game before reading back.

*sigh* can't remember it happening much this season but I think we deserved at the very least a draw yesterday. Taking out the fact we couldn't defend throw ins or set pieces very well we were much the better side I thought. And unfortunately because we couldn't defend properly was why we lost the game, and possibly why we'll maybe get relegated.

I think the players will have been gutted given the effort they put in yesterday in playing a very ordinary Burton side off the park for large swaths of the match. Unfortunately it just wasn't happening in the final third, either poor delivery in the box, or a Pitman who just wasn't at the races. (I thought that misses aside he was disappointing yesterday) Payne and Missilou did their best to make things happen but it just wasn't to be and 2 really poor goals to concede defensively.

Couple of other things - What's with the ridiculous substitutes 2 minutes into 5 of injury time? Way way WAY too late. I'd have tried Hope for Pitman on about 65/70 as he was barely winning a header and his movement is just non-existant. Granted we were dominating and so you don't want to change things too much, but I think we should have made at least 1 if not 2 changes and then surely after going 2-1 down you get your subs on immediately??
The other thing I've noticed is how much of a little bitch Scott Twine is becoming. Every time he is fouled he goes down holding his leg as if he has been attacked with a hacksaw. Granted in football these days you have to make it obvious you have been fouled but it's starting to irk me how much he does it. At one stage in the second half he got tackled and went down holding his leg but saw nobody was paying any attention to him and so stood up and got on with it. I hope he can learn to balance out his gamesmanship.

Positives to take out of the game but with Posh up next it's looking grim. If only we could transform our away performances into the CG, we'd be nowhere near the bottom.

now that sounds much more stfc.

of course a win at Wigan will keep us up, so we'll play defensively, somehow nick an equaliser then go ultra attack in the last 5 and hit the post after camping in their half.

we will be left wondering why we didn't go for it sooner.

Decent performance for no return.
This, not great but far from shocking, just can't defend crosses and struggle to score, 2 basics of a team TBH but it was between 2 evenly matched teams, both pretty shit and lacking in quality.

That said we didn't have many really poor performers, I would probably suggest Thompson was the only sub par performer for most of the game. Pitman led the line well but missed a decent chance 1st half which probably would have changed the outcome.

The biggest couple of issues, which are pretty fundamental and why I lay them at the Managers door, are that we don't really look like we have a "way" to score goals, but we have several ways where we look likely to concede them.  Aside from some random changes in personnel and formations by Sheridan when under the kosh, we've rarely looked like solving either of those issues.  When you layer in the lack of possession we seek in most games, it's a recipe for disaster.  That is the frustration with yesterday because we actually did get possession thanks to playing a team being just as cautious as us and Grant in defence brings a bit of desire to play out at times.

None of our goals look like they come from a system of play - they tend to be one off efforts.

Every goal we concede seems to be down to a just a few route causes - either balls into the box from wide and we lose markers, route one bullying, or through balls in behind/down the channel with a defensive line that is not a line.  Two of these are made worse by our lumping the ball forward in most games and losing possession, plus little to no press on the opposition once they get the ball back.

I'll keep coming back to it, but that smacks of a team not being coached well.

Sprinkle in a lack of confidence, a few players not really up the the standard and you get individual mistakes to layer on top of just being badly set-up in the first place.

With yesterday specifically, you would ask why change it when we were dominant - well, because we were dominant and they change it by adding a ball play in midfield to try and get possession and counter us a little.  At that point you could make a change to put more of a press on them, either replace Twine with someone more mobile/pacey or remove a defender and put another body further up the pitch (given they were no threat outside of set pieces).

Yup, I said this a few pages back and the more I think about it the more I think that's the root cause of the dissatisfaction with Sheridan. When we score it's either Payne/Twine doing something brilliant or the opposition fucking up somehow, or just a lucky bounce, we simply don't score "well worked goals".

There’s no mystery at all. We’re just fucking shit. Hopefully there are 4 others that are slightly worse than fucking shit.

Which is a distinct possibility.

No point at all. He was Tyler Smith’s replacement when he was yet another loan Sheridan wanted to jettison.

Now he’s got another 2 players he doesn’t want to pick.

He really is a clueless fuckwit.

I've obviously got less tactical nous than a professional football manager but continuously prevailing with a lone target man that can barely get about the pitch is surely so easy for a team to defend against. Garrick and Omotoye have pace to burn so given his insistence on going long, why not utilise the option to get these players in down the channels, forcing defenders to have to think differently?

Are there many teams at this level who score "well worked goals", admittedly only from watching highlights but the vast majority we have conceded seem to be similarly in the "fucking up somehow" genre....

To be fair to Sheridan he did just that yesterday and reverted to Plan B, albeit after 93 mins and 10 mins after we had gone 2-1 down.

Burton scored two yesterday, albeit from set plays. But you're right, there are plenty of shit teams this season. It's why we still somehow have hope!

fuck me this has to be one of the most depressing match day threads iv seen in a long while and all off the back of a game which we didn't deserve to lose, created the better opportunities and knocked the ball around well for large periods.

I need to watch the highlights again (genuinly) as we did play well in knocking it around and the effort was there, I don't recall making and missing many actual chances

Looking at the run-in, we seem to have the easiest of all the bottom 6
(https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EyS9e10VcAMMte1?format=jpg&name=small)
But that's because we play more of the bottom 6 than the others which is of course very much a double-edged sword

Looking at the fixtures of other teams around us - I reckon we've got the 'easiest' run in.

My predictions are a tad rudimentary - going by the opposition's league position and where the game is being played. You can expect there to be more wins for others than I've predicted. But I've not given us a win either - which is rather conservative methinks considering we have 3 of the bottom 6 to play.

Blimey your predictions leaves us potentially staying up with 40 points, as long as there isn't a swing in goal difference  of 3 in favour of Wigan, in our predicted 4 losses against their 2. Still think myself that 47 points will be needed, maybe less if we pick them up in the games against the bottom 6.

twine had some efforts, one rebound which led to pitman missing a tough but open goal header, the best chance in open play for the whole match was some brilliant overlapping build up down the right and pitman just didnt connect 3 yards out and was cleared off the line.

Total shots
13 v 13
Blocked shots
6 v 5
Corners
4 v 4
Throw ins
33 v 17
Passes
307 v 464
Passes completed
193 v 337
Pass success percentage
63 v 73
Crosses
17 v 14

compared to the majority of the football played under sheridan this was completely different. we had a decent element of control and i dont think i would have made a sub before the 82nd min as we were pushing and had the ball. we didnt at that point really need to change anything but the 2nd goal completely changes everything and its almost too late in the game to effect it when burton then put every player behind the ball to hold out

i think a season of shit and stress has made everything think this match was a normal result and performance

Ipswich at home is a very possible 3 points. Rochdale haven’t won at home in 17 games - that sounds foreboding!

Wimbledon away = 3 points

I reckon we’ll get 8 more points
