Title: For Nemo: Nailed on 3 points- let’s keep positive. Sunderland v STFC
Post by: bathford on Monday, March 1, 2021, 10:34:18
Let’s keep the positive thoughts going. We’re taking on the former Shitty Manager, so that’s another good reason to beat them.

1-2 score line. I don’t know who will score and frankly don’t care.

Confidence must be rising.

Come on Swindon, do it for Nemo!

Hopefully Wollacott is back in the team having travelled up today with the squad.

Sunderland are pretty good and sit in 5th place with 3 wins and a draw in the last 4 league games.

Head says..

Sunderland 3-0 Swindon

Heart says Wollacott to return to the fold and play a blinder and grab a 0-0 draw.

McGeady and Wyke will have a field day against Matthews. 3-0.

Really important we don't over-react to defeats in the next 3. Tough run coming up. Would take 2-3 points from the next 9 available.

I’ve called the last 3 results correctly - WDW.

League table says Lincoln are better than Sunderland. We should have beaten Lincoln comfortably so, obviously, this means - absolutely fuck all.

Still fancy a draw, mind. Another 6 pointer tomorrow - Burton v BRovers plus some equally tricky looking fixtures for the other down and outs at the bottom.

Point would be marvellous, dahling!

Form guide says Lincoln are a fair bit worse than Sunderland though DDWDL vs LWWWD.

I didn't think Sunderland were up to much when we played them at our place, although that was under Wellens. They didn't have many opportunities and the ref had a bit of a stinker. Having said that, I do think we'll lose with probably a brave performance which we seem to be able to bring up in games against the top sides. Who knows though, maybe the last few results will give the squad a bit of belief and we'll steal a point.

Kovar had a poor game and our defence all over the place and Grounds gave away a soft penalty too.

Sunderland werent that great but I understand they are playing better football now than they were at the time, we had almost the same amount of shots as they had 8 vs 9.

They have in recent games had between 9 and 17 shots in every game with about 50% being on target on average. We will need a backs to the wall performance to get aything up there.

In the 14 games between us and them we have only once ever won up there and had 3 draws, scoring less than 1 per game on average and conceding more than 2 on average.

Our only win coming in 1993 on the way to the Premier League under Hoddle when Zippy got the only goals at Roker Park, they missed 2 penalties in that game and Town rode their luck a bit.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQAR2i7p96U&feature=emb_logo

All our draws and single win have come in the last 6 games up there, the last 6 results being DDWLDL.

Prior to that run Swindon lost all 8 games conceding a huge 30 goals in the process including a 6, a 5 and three 4 goal matches.

Sunderland have lost the least amount of games this season in the league (5), that equates to one loss in every six games. We have the most losses (jointly with Wigan) at 18, that equates to roughly three losses for every five games. They have a goal difference of plus 20, we have minus 19. Although they only managed draws at home to Rovers and Burton, plus a loss to Wigan.

2-1 to us  :)

Like to see a good performance and to give it a go rather than lose without breaking a sweat - depends if Sheridan tells the players they are allowed to cross the halfway line, hopefully we can nick at least a point

Hoping for a Lincoln performance but I fear a perfect storm combination of a lacklustre Town and opposition that can finish their chances.

Mackems 4-0 Robins

Loved going to Roker Park. The win in the potato print shirt was a belter.

As has been said, another free hit.
Maybe a bit more time & space to play and overall a less frantic affair than if playing against a relegation rival.

The 1-0 win at Roker Park in 93 was fantastic. Forgot that they missed a couple of pens.
Also made it to the Estádio da Luz for a midweek 0-0 in Oct 1997. They missed a penalty in that one as well.  :)
Happy days, getting back home at fuck off o'clock in the morning and up early for work.

Also remember getting as far as Leicester when a midweek game at Sunderland was called off.
One coachload of intrepid explorers set off for the delights of Lincoln V Carlisle or was it Mansfield.
Opted for the homeward bound coach.

Was looking forward to an overnighter for this one and making a day of it.

Cheers. :pint:

It was indeed Lincoln v Carlisle. Most of us went in the home end but there was one Town fan who went on the Sincil Bank terrace with the Carlisle fan(s). 1-0 Lincoln, I think.

If memory serves me right, I think Leicester were at home to Cambridge that evening. God knows why we didn’t try to get to that game instead.

A sickeningly scrappy and desperate  0 - 1. In off Payne's shin or something calamitous after a charge down.

Would gladly take a point but I think nailed on is following it up with a loss to the Milk Chuggers (that's Accrington Aud  ;) ). They are such an organised side. I personally think in some ways this Mackem challenge tomorrow will be somewhat easier; purely because Town will be expected to roll over and be easily beaten.

Yep fuck it,

North East Black Cats 0 - 1 STFC (Payne 78')

Its not sheridan. I think its Paul Jewell. Its someone in the stands anyway.

Was funny when they asked him to move from the microphone as the stream could here him swearing at the swindon players.
.  I assumed it  was Sheridan based on the descriptive language being used. Him and Jewell obviously went to the same finishing school

If ever there was a season for watching on Teletext, this is it.

In possession, to a man it's fucking atrocious.

Out of possession we've frustrated them bar the joy they were getting from Grounds, but they seemed to panic a bit, moved that player to the other wing and lost any advantage they might have had.

Horrid viewing - I guess, just like the last two wins, who really cares - hence the Teletext comment.

Well, it's not as bad as I thought it might be but Sunderland have a few players of quality in their team. Would be an achievement to stop them scoring and the only time we look a threat is set pieces.

Will take that. Didn’t expect to dominate and if we can give Twine a sighter or two, or Garrick knocks one in to PPP, then you never know. The centre of midfield is looking predictably flimsy but at least we’re looking like a proper team again. Still in this.

Gosh! That was bloody awful viewing.

Trueman did what was asked of him.

Defence looked solid. Grounds did well after being targeted.

Midfield: Payne harried. Palmer dead balls and give it away. Thompson defended Ok.

Garrick keeps getting drawn into the foul. Twine has been busy and tried 2 spectaculars.

Pitman didnt get any service.

I wonder if this is what has come along to save our season (potentially)?  Our pitch has been bad for a while, but the Sunderland one looks like it's made from the bobbly bits around the Oasis as well.  Maybe we'll be saved by nobody being able to play proper football.

going absolutely fine so far, the perfect away performance ready for a late town goal!

we are wasteful in possession and if they score its probably game over. BUT
extremely well organised, they have had the ball but limited them to very few chances and the closing down and press is brilliant.

in a game as isolated as this up top i would probably prefer a Hope over Pitman and try and get in behind a bit more. its a tough one as any goals are most likely from crosses and set pieces and you would want him in the box for those.

so far so good. would be a fantastic point especially the way the other results are going (bar Northampton) would like to see the midfield hold onto the ball longer and be less wasteful as there is only so much pressure a team can take until it starts to creak

Not sure I can see Plan B working for us. If we get anything now, it’ll be streaky.
Sadly we have been lacking in quality and when you play inviting teams on to you if you go a goal down its near impossible to change your system.

dont think there would have been any complaints from sunderland if we had scored. that was a tough finish. a so called free hit but for all of the possession they didnt do much to win that.

If you watch the game back and they substitute Sunderland for a semi competent League Two team playing away at a plucky non-league team in the FA Cup on a shoddy pitch, you'll probably see that game in a better light.

Two pretty dire teams on a dire pitch serving up dire entertainment.

As a Swindon fan, if you simply looked for the result after the game you'd sort of be OK with it.  The season won't be broken by this result.

Sunderland were always going to win it, Twine offered moments of hope for the plucky underdogs, but the writing was always on the wall.  Sunderland certainly added to the shitness on display mind.

Can this season just hurry up an be over with us sat above a dotted line.

Given where we are - good effort, did well in defence, mostly shit with the ball, nobody thought we'd get a result, so move on.

Fuck. Not too upset about that though. I’d never have said this a month ago, but we were a L1 team tonight. Under the cosh at times, but centre defence very good, good shape, players doing their jobs. That was more reassuring than shaky wins like Crewe or Wigan. I begin to think we might be ok.

best team we've faced. skillful players able to play pass and move better than we did.

I thought we played well to be honest. Certainly looking less likely to concede.

Lacking still in firepower but that comes from chances created from the middle...and to me that is providing no creativity.
I hope that Grant can come back and play like he did last year as that will breed confidence. I'd also look to put Caddis on for a half in the middle as he loves to get crosses in, which we seem unable to do with any pace. Payne looked lightweight tonight, tried hard but did nothing.

Swindon MoM for me was Broadbent. Looked assured and strong.

This. We could have grabbed a point or even more on a different day, we had chances, I just wish we changed the tactics before they scored as we looked better in the last 20 mins or so.

We made a fist of it by all accounts
No, no we didn't.

We set up to defend all night, with no real intent on trying to score. The first half was attack versus defence. We had 2 shots from free kicks by Twine other than that, we defended and hoofed the ball away.

The second half continued in the same way. Just prior to the goal, a couple of gaps appeared in the defence for the first time in the game. Broadbent was unlucky to tangle with their midfielder to give away a freekick. Perfect delivery and they were 1-0 up. After that we made changes and tried. We unbelievably had about 5 (half) chances.

Twine's made several defence splitting passes, but it wasn't to be. Twine hitting the cross bar and Grounds blasting the rebound wide summed up our day.

Sunderland were poor and we could and should have beaten them. But, if you set up to draw 0-0 or nick a goal on the off chance, then you will more than often come unstuck.

Not bad at all. Not much in it and thought a draw would have been a fair result. Broadbent for MOM - sterling performance tonight.

The amount of misplaced passes is a worry again. 61% pass completion is piss poor and compounded by hit and hope long balls that don't have a chance of making it.

On another note, it was interesting at half time catching an interview with Marcus Cassidy. Sounds like a new drainage system is needed in the summer!

Strangely happy. Stuck to our tasks. Accrington have one win in seven and played 75 mins tonight with 10 men so who knows what that will have taken out of them. On recent evidence there's no reason we can't get something from that game before we play Oxford a week today.

Hopefully we go there with a bit more intent as you do wonder what would have happened if we'd have had more of a go tonight. Defence is unquestionably the weakest area of Sunderland's side.

Agree that we should have looked to take them on more. When we got on the front foot they looked panicky, last ten to fifteen minutes looked like we might nick a draw when going for it. Still a decent effort though with Broadbent and Conroy excellent.
As has been said , not much expected from this 'free hit' . Hope that gives us a bit of confidence to get something Saturday which is very doable, and follow that doing a hilarious double over the scum.

Sheridan:
- Good display
- Came to a big club, but competed well
- Lots of endeavour
- Could have kept ball better in the first half
- Didnt want to give cheap freekicks away as they had good delivery
- They had a couple of chances when we were chasing the game
- Disappointed
- Got a bit of a system and work ethic. Lots of honesty about us
- Didnt keep ball long enough in the first half but better in the second
- Keeper hasnt had much to do
- Poor goal to give away
- Twine wonderstrike at the end. Shame we didnt come away with anything
- When Twine gets in and around the area he's good. But its his all round play too.
- Ball to Hope was a lovely pass and best chance of the game
- Team performance was spirited
- Going to be tight until the end of the season
- Would have been a great point if we'd got it, but just fell sort
- Trueman has good pedigree. Only joined up with us yesterday. Did what he had to do well. Looked comfortable
- Does Trueman have to play on Saturday? Sheridan unsure of the rules. But will make sure we do the right thing. We have to have a fit keeper to compete with Matthews
- Just want players to know the importance of wanting to stay in the division. Players are showing they want to
- Need to keep the standard of performance up
- Its hard for the players playing Sat/Tues. Will think about whats best between now and Saturday
- Lyden, J Grant, T Smith and Odimayo will be fit
- Hunt did well after leaving Caddis out

they were a decent outfit and we made it hard for them to create and get at us. at the end of the day a loss is a loss but there are ways too lose to a good side and we could have had a well deserved point. last 12 fixtures they are 2nd in league form table.

defence looking more comfortable last few matches and i dont think anyone has really mentioned the goal keeper, considering that was his debut its a big complement. good at crosses, very assured.

you quoted the pitch a few times but I couldn't see anything wrong with it? for all of sunderlands possession almost all of it was played on the floor at pace.

Trueman 7
Good debut. Did everything right in the first half. Only one dodgy moment when he let their striker close him down and his clearance was deflected. Apart from that, he looked confident, well organised, kicked fairly well and made at least one good save. Also, a lucky save when he sat on the ball! Impressed with him

Grounds 6
He did well as he was targeted in the first half and on the whole withstood the barrage. Couple of misplaced clearances and snatched at a last second chance to score. Gave the ball away too much in first half.

Broadbent 8
Really good performance. Won everything in the air (apart from their goal) and snuffed out their attack. Probably the best game he has played for us (apart from upfront against Oxford)

Conroy 7
Covered well. Spraying the ball resulted in losing it most of the time. But covered Hunt well.

Hunt 6.5
Good defensive display. Nothing going forward

Thompson 6
Defended well. Offered nothing much going forward. Gave ball away a lot.

Palmer 6
Harried and ran around. Kept giving the ball away

Payne 6.5
Energetic defensive performance. Couple of surges forward, but set up to be defensive

Twine 8.5
Solid defending. Pressed across the line. Two chances in the first half, where he created free kick opportunities for himself. Slide rule pass for Hope in the second for our best chance. Then hit the crossbar with a wonder strike in the last seconds of the game. Has to have been the best player on the pitch in Feb and March so far.

Pitman 5
No service at all. Made no impression tonight

Garrick 5
Tried, but was well marshalled. Ended up giving freekicks away or playing the ball in to touch. Got a telling off for not following up on the far post when Twine had a run and cross goal shot.

Subs:
Omatoye 5
Didn’t touch the ball I don’t think

Hope 6
Two runs and put through for our best chance of the game.

Missilou 5
First contribution was a high boot. Always looks to be 5 yards too deep. Not sure he touched the ball

Garrick
- They celebrated so much as they were relieved to beat us
- We didnt create enough or final ball was missing
- Always a game around the corner to put things right
- Hate to be a goalkeeper facing Twine tonight
- Twine key to the way we want to play
- Everytime he got near the ball there were 3 people pressing
- Twine is the one who will find Garrick or be on the end of crosses (Think Pitman might argue that!!)
- Their defence trebled up on Garrick. They were solid defensively
- Played wing for most of his career. But happy to play up front if thats where the manager wants him
- Empty stadium: Today was a very big stadium

Title: Re: For Nemo: Nailed on 3 points- let’s keep positive. Sunderland v STFC

Hawes:
- Difficult to defend for 90 mins
- Trueman not at fault for goal
- Twine at centre of all good moments
- Twine must be played in the area behind the striker
- Played in Hope with a quality ball
- If you build a team around Twine, it may be a good thing to do
- Confusing about Wollacott and Trueman situation and if both are fit who plays on Saturday?
- Trueman made a couple of good saves and looked very steady
- Missilou arrived too late
- Omatoye was a bit peripheral when he came on. Need ball played to his feet. No opportunity to see his pace, which is his best asset
- Burton top of the mini-league. New squad, new manager. Looking likely to pull away
- Northampton good win against Plymouth. They have already played all of the bottom sides

Wright (pre game interview):
- Short term plan at the moment
- Long term need to see what the budget will be for L2 or L1 next year
- Lots of players out of contract at end of year. Are they good enough for L1?
- Will look at players and make assessments and have an A list and B list depending upon what it looks like will happen for next year
- This year we built a squad but couldn't keep all the players from last year. Loan players came in. Some did well and some didnt
- 6 goalkeepers. Hoped Kovar would be another Benda. But it didnt work
- Would have to improve the squad if we stay up

Cheers NMH.

A bit of a shame that the plan for the ‘free hit’ was to go for a 0-0, especially when Sunderland have dropped points at home to Gillingham, Plymouth, Wimbledon, Wigan and Burton.

The performance and point at Lincoln showed we can compete with the better sides and we all know there aren’t any outstanding teams in this division, so why the change for Sunderland? With games running out, we’re nearly at the stage where we need to win every other game to get to around 50 points. Surely the plan has to be to go for wins now rather than later?

At least my prediction of a drubbing was way off the mark and there were some competent-good individual performances.

From what I’ve seen and heard, Sheridan will say it as it is.  If people don’t like being criticised for not doing their job tough. He’s upset a few in the camp, but he’s made an atmosphere of ‘prove me wrong’.

It’s his way of motivation. Not everyone’s cup of tea, but it seems to have gelled the players into a unit now working to jointly prove that they can do it.

Let’s face it, that’s all he has asked for.

Now he’s seen that they are at least using their brains, he’s prepared to praise them and recognise their effort.

As I say, not everyone’s way of doing it. But it seems to be working.

Oh, and "saying it as it is" would be quite nice if it included the fans more than once every other game. Can't remember a manager who could be less arsed with those duties, lockdown or not.

I think it is a bit of a stretch to say it is working, 2 good performances (Ipswich and Lincoln) in 20 odd matches doesn't constitute as working in my eyes.  Have the results improved in the past 4 games, yes, but 1 of those 4 was a complete fluke and undeserved.

2 swallows does not a summer make and all that.

100% this.

We might have improved slightly but to be fair could we have got any worse?

We are looking at degrees of improvement here from an awfully low base.

Lots of games played (and lost) and IMO a terrible amount of damage caused.

It doesn't (and I'll dodge the obvious gag for once) but nonetheless there does seem to have been a step change in how we set up at least. And while Sunderland was a regression from the more on the front foot positive tactics deployed at Lincoln, the 4-2-3-1 with Twine as a 10 stayed. There is a change for the positive in the set up, it's a shame that at Sunderland we didn't deploy the tactics to match until they scored.

Surely the point is that it is working *now*?

We're still not ripping up trees, but things have improved.

I don't have an issue with going away to Sunderland and setting up to be on the back foot, they have a good squad and we don't. My main issue is that it should've become apparent quite early that they were there for the taking and an adjustment should've been made a lot sooner than after they scored. I think Sheridan was happy for a point (which tbf, we all probably would've been) and really overestimated how good Sunderland would be.

I agree totally, certainly by the end of the 1st half we could all see that Sunderlands ability was highly oversold to us, as were Lincon previously too TBH.

They were weak at the back, certainly at CB and caused us very few problems, McGeady looked poor when I have been told hes a great player, he wasn't against us. Sunderland were there to be had as we showe din the last 20 mins but we should have gone at them from the off in the 2nd half, like a little Jack Russell nipping at the legs of the Great Dane.

We're still not ripping up trees, but things have improved.

For sure things have improved results wise and in the fact that we finally seem to have a semblence of a plan and players are finally being played or played in their correct positions (e.g. Twine and Garrick).

My point is that I cannot sit here happily stating that it is working based on what we have seen so far.  Ipswich was very positive, then we capitulated for the next 5 or 6 games, then we got a fluke 3 points with a terrible performance vs Crewe which lead into a very positive performance against Lincoln.  Then we played poorly against a poor Cobblers side and took a great 3 points and then lost against Sunderland with an uninspiring display (somewhat to be expected) until the last 20 mins.

If others constitute this as working then that is fine, and shows just how far our expectations have diminished.  I fully understand that it is about points in our current situation and performances mean nothing, and our points haul over the past 4 games has been impressive compared to earlier in the season but I personally still cannot be happy to say that this is working now as, apart from Ipswich and Lincoln, we have scraped a few wins by the odd goal that, based on our performance on the day could have easily gone the other way.

He is getting us through, and we are in a slightly upward trajectory, but not significant enough that it couldn't switch the other way quite easily.  At the moment we are 2 steps forward 1 step back which is better than the other way around for now.

Not watched the games but from the line up I had assumed we were playing 3 at the back (with two wing backs) as we are playing 3 centre halves in each game with Conroy, Broadbent and Grounds?

Grounds LB, Thompon LM. It's been a very rigid 4411 for sure.

Twine plays too deep for it to be 4-4-1-1, he's playing as a deep 10 (free 8?) in an attacking midfield 3 behind the striker. At least, that's how I've seen it. But we agree on the back 4, at least, although BBC sport app and website keep showing it as a 3 even though the commentators rightly describe a back 4

They have players missing in defence and patched up.
Sheridan did nothing with this and clear to see that Pitman should have been replaced by Hope only to close down quicker.
Another reason, albeit opinion why I struggle with this dinosaur.

I'll give you that - it's a pitfall of trying define something that's incredibly complicated and nuanced (even under Shez) in a combination of 3 or 4 digits that add up to 10.

It's widely accepted that there are 7 lines of play, most formations aren't symetrical and also completely different in and out of possession but try putting that on a graphic on TV!.

Yes, absolutely. It's baffling as to why we persist with the convention when it's so inadequate to what we are trying to describe. But it's the convention we have so everyone persists with it

I haven't watched the Town since Wellens left except Ipswich. The jelly formation described here sounds like the Cruyff / Ajax / Holland "Total Football" system with players moving into changing positions to confound the opposition. Maybe I should take a look again - the "Morphin Swindon". How do you advise?

Spot on - Total football.  Trust me, you won’t be disappointed
