I am in the market for a new TV. Ideally 50" with a budget between £300-£400. Only requirement is 4k UHD but think that's pretty standard now as is optical and 2+ hdmi ports. Not going to be used for gaming. Just watching. Have a fire stick so not bothered about smart stuff.

Heard TCL or Hisense are pretty good.

The sister in law bought one of these from Currys last week, £299 with free delivery, shes happy with it.

Heard a fair bit of bad stuff about Hisense TBH but they are a much of a muchness at the lower end of the cost scale.

I bought this recently, really pleased with it.

I have a Hisense 4k set, it's at the budget end but it's ok for the money.

Most other "brand" sets at that price point like JVC, Toshiba and even some Panasonic are all made by a company called Vestel and are generally regarded as low end budget sets.

I'm pretty sure Vestel are Turkish and do a lot of the Air conditioning units over there. So your TV receptions might be awful, but at least you'll be kept cool.

50 inch, you may as well be watching on a iPhone.

We bought a new 4k 60 inch TV a couple of years ago and now I feel I want something larger but the wife won't allow me until this one breaks.

I bought a hisense 55inch 4k TV for under £400 in the autumn after my samsung packed up after 18 months and was beyond repair. It's a very good TV for the price. You have to tweak the picture but once you do it is really impressive. I'd advise buying from richer sounds as you get 6 years warranty. A mistake I made with the Samsung from Curry's.

On a grumpy level, flat screen telly's last no time at all do they!

Our Panasonic plasma from 2010 is still working as good as gold

I bought the Samsung to replace a 2008 32 inch Panasonic lcd. Wanted a bigger screen. LEDs burned out on the Samsung and caused screen burn. I had a bloke look at it and to be fair he didn't charge me but said it is beyond repair.
The Panasonic is still going strong in my son's room. I wouldn't pay big money for a TV. My mate just bought one for 3 grand and I think that's ridiculous.

Had a few Panasonics over the years, always replaced to upgrade rather than cos knackered. All are still going strong having moved to kids rooms, rellies etc. TBH wouldn't buy anything else, but that's just me. I think Samsungs and LG have more Smart stuff, but always been v happy with quality of Panasonic

I don't see the point in spending loads of cash on TVs these days particularly if you consume content on phones and tablet devices.

I'd quite happily do without a TV altogether. We have one, because the wife and kids use it, but I honestly don't think I have ever sat down to watch it myself.

If/when the plasma gives up the ghost, I suspect I will buy a new £200 jobbie.

Films/Movies (and gaming). A big screen (obviously cinema is unmatchable) is paramount for showcasing and viewing films at an optimum level. This matters to several folk and for the best experience, film should always be shown on a screen capable of the highest possible quality.

If some aren't so keen then each to their own but I wouldn't be telling others not to spend on something that might be most relevant for their own personal enjoyment.

If screen size is important, it might be worth visiting your local cinema when it reopens.

Read back... I mention cinema is the obvious choice but that isn't possible in the current world we live in. Film screenings should always be viewed in a cinema but if they can't then a large screen at home (preferably in one's own dedicated cinema room) should be the next best choice.

Funnily enough, we also have a Panasonic projector but rarely use it.  Cost a bomb a few years ago.
