Title: Swindon v Wigan pre match chat and matchday thread
Post by: 4D on Sunday, January 31, 2021, 16:41:37
It's the big one. To say we need 3 points from this is an understatement. I hope we can turn our game around, it needs to happen now - no excuses.

If we’ve got to win around half our remaining games, it’s got to start Tuesday.

He’ll be surprised that they play in different positions to the ones he had them playing in. He’ll pinpoint the strengths of their central midfield player, Palmer, forgetting he’s our new right winger

Mixed with a highly motivated group of players makes them a dangerous team if not that talented

Both teams digging deep into their own half launching an aerial bombardment into the opposing goal mouth. War horse standing on the side hands in his pockets.
0-0 and the Supporters suffering PTSD and rocking forwards and backwards from the after effects of yet another ifollow bonanza.

It doesn't really matter at this stage. As much as three points would be welcome, if we win it'll be in spite of the dino, not because of him. It may also prolong the agony.

We've got more chance of staying up if we lose and it forces Shez out than if we win and it buys him another month.

That said, I think it'll be a draw. There's no point speculating on lineups because any lineup that makes sense to us will a) not happen and b) be irrelvant.

This isn't the trial then.

A CMC is a case management conference. This may be a second CMC as the first one should have been a CCMC (costs case management conference).

The fact that this is not a PTR (pre trial review) suggests that the trial may not happen for some time.

Things will probably have happened as I understand the claim was issued in 2019.  It may be that the court/parties will review whether any other 'directions' are required before the claim comes to trial.

As I know little about the proceedings, it's difficult to say with certainty what is going on. Those ITK may shed further light.

Claims do not come to trial overnight and Covid-19 has had a substantial impact on the speed at which claims are progressing.

Same here. Had the game kicked off at a sensible time I might have watched, more as morbid curiousity, like passing a car crash on the motorway. But I'll be tucking into my veggie haggis at 6 so will let the game slide.

My original prediction I noted was 3-2. This has been change to a 0-2 defeat which hopefully should see the end of our manager.

If the game wasn't already pre paid for it would be the first game I have not watched voluntarily since the 1st game on iFollow in August 2018.

Selling DJ, although the signs were there during the MKD games as I spoke about I truly didn't think it would happen, it feels like the last money grab act of an owner on his way out.

Win lose or draw makes do difference to me now, of course a win would help in our relegation battle but I just don't care, rightly or wrongly, my feelings towards the club I love are just numb at the moment.

A Jurrassic style performance on the pitch tonight against an equally poor team and scraping a 1-1 draw with us conceding a late goal in the 93rd minute.

I think that was based on an understanding of what was happening in the Standing proceedings which appears to have been incorrect.

Gutted we can't be there tonight. Can't the GW Reds coordinate a mass whacking of tennis balls into the ground or something? How do we make ourselves heard today?

Town end car park?

A couple on here suggested we'd all have something to look forward to early this week.

Has that now completely gone out the window or is said news still on the cards?

I’ve just made a rather nice quiche. Could have been that.

Any manager worth his salt would have wanted DJ and Matt Smith to stay before giving saving us a crack.  Power won't act anyway.

I have belatedly joined the Sheridan out camp with the zeal of a convert.

Whether he is paid or not, Sheridan should not be permitted anywhere near our squad.  Caddis or a senior player committee should be given the role

Why does he not include players in the squad then start them . Caddis has gone from not in the squad to starting tonight. I get they were trying to get him to leave but playing him surely helps that

Unless Caddis has a "1st team appearance bonus" in his contract so his appearance costing the club more money?

Yes I do think that every penny helps at the moment, it could be something as petty as that.

Would just add that would like Caddis and senior players to start taking training and picking the side even if Sheridan stays.

Zidane did it when France looked like failing to qualify for a World Cup.  They subsequently qualified and reached extra time of the Final unbeaten.  But the headbutt...

I reckon Sheridan picks the team and formation using something like the contestant bit on the cheesy game show The Wheel.  Therefore it is Pointless considering a considered selection.  Tactical approach is probably determined with a Magic 8 Ball.  "Should I play a 4-5-1?", shakes ball, It is Decidedly So

Forgot about Payne. I think he is pretty useless. Even earlier in the season under Wellens his final ball or shot was usually scuffed or weak. He flaps around a lot and looks like he is going to do something but very rarely does. Also light weight and just gets bullied by proper teams. I'm not sure what his position really is. He is not a wide player, and isnt competitive enough for center midfield. He is probably a number 10, but he doesnt offer enough in that role compared to the departed DJ.

The only time he looked decent at 10, and i cant remember the game, but it was when he supported Pitman. He basically did Pitmans running and pressing for him.

I don't blame you, I am sorely tempted to.

I have no idea what team or formation we are likely to play tonight as I not ITK at all but I am assuming it will be a mishmash of sitting back and letting them attack us and hitting them on the break or with a hoofball aimed at Pitman/Hope/Omotoye with the reciever unable to do anything with it.

Tacticless, desireless, leaderless, structurelss and utimately totally fruitless.

Buy a matchday pass or put a ten big benjamins on Wigan to win, over 2.5gls and over 8 corners?

I'll go with the latter, throwing money away either way no doubt. Might just go with my usual....the other team with a handicap of minus 1. It's been the fabric softener to a very starchy season.

Difficult see where the creativity will come from in that line-up.
Payne will need to flit around with some purpose tonight.

Remember it's not the winning but the taking part that counts.  :)
We must be a due a win on a Tuesday night going by law of averages.
A sequence of 0-3, 0-1, 1-4, 0-2 at home would suggest that the law of averages will find it difficult to help us out.

Still hopeful that the post match voddy's will be celebratory and not commiseratory.

The squad hasn't changed that much and we will have to change for DJ and Freeman leaving the club. The team we have been training with is very similar apart from those two leaving. Ellis Iandolo has been back training recently and is nearly fit. Paul Caddis will come in tonight and Matthews will be on the bench as well. Hopefully we can get a result to give everyone a boost.

I see Wigan are starting with 3 players up front who have been linked to us in the last year...

Zach Clough 7
Callum Lang 9
Will Keane 10

I had a look at their line up expecting a hotch potch of nonsense given how low in the table they are and the fact they appear to get spanked each week but I don't think they look a bad side (on paper) at all.

Luckily the trauma will be over just after the one show is finished.

If there is any club that has had a more torrid year than us, it’s them. Treated horribly. Imagine going from Paul Cook to Sheridan. At least they have shown that you can come out on the other side.

4231 same as every game

It’s not a terrible side... If we had a manager with a bit about him

Neither Pitman nor T Smith can play a supporting role - one for lack of legs, the other plays on the shoulder.

That's 4 players in the team with little to no clue on defending, which means they will exert far too much energy thinking about where they should be and diverting it from being much kop (just an opinion).  Add in Palmer who does not look much better at defending in general and you've exposed the back four unless we play football by numbers again, which seems likely.  Everyone just retreat to the painted spots on the floor with your number please, at least 6 feet apart.

Which had us looking totally lost against Hull, should never have started that way up there, hopefully it is 433/451.

My point wasn't about playing badly, I mean it literally.  He is running everywhere - it will lead to some good stuff, but, it's his problem.  He will be shattered by half time and he's leaving the left side for them totally open at times.  He is playing like a number 10.

Wigan are somewhat coming back/growing into it. This is Town so proceed with caution. The key times tend to be at the beginning of a half or near the end. Switch off at 43mins...and Town can't defend corners well at all. Have given them 6 so far...

Cut out corner concedes and limit their set piece chances. Next 5mins are key. Must go in at HT with the lead and concentrate for the first 5mins of the 2nd half. Town then, may just sneak it.

This season is starting to remind me when we were fighting relegation with Tony Thorpe and Jamie Cureton. Glimmers of hope only to be dashed right at the end. Haven’t we got Wigan away on the final game of the season?

The season where we sold our best attacker (Fallon) at the end of the window in January, you mean? 2005/6 under Iffy.

I think the difference is really that season we had a godawful squad and Iffy was trying his best. Not sure either are true this year...

Well, there appears to be one team worse than us. Maybe Burton are a second, pending how their new signings settle. Just need two more...

AFC Wimbledon and I'd say Rochdale possibly. Think Northampton & Rovers will just about have enough. Plus they have 3 games in hand on us.

Tight as a Nun's chuff too!

Christ, I didn’t remember that season being with Iffy. I assumed it was Andy King in charge but I think you’re right. The days of Loud and Proud.. Went to Yeovil in a proper relegation fight a week after getting thumped 7-1 at Nottingham
Forest. Cureton missed an open goal from a metre out... #happymemories

Pitman’s clearly telling the officials as he goes off that that corner went straight in. Didn’t see it like that myself, but Hawes was speculating.

Wigan defence comical.  Travers and Conroy solid for us though but we're looking vulnerable down their lhs defensively.  Missing the quality of Smith and DJ but can't fault the commitment.  Even from Pitman.

Have a feeling we'll be hanging on desperately and banging wild punts to Omotoye if we're still in the lead after 70.

FT 1-0

We did a win.

Any other team in this division would have and should have beaten us today, it was a truly dire match against a rubbish side, we were slightly less rubbish in the end.

3 point could help at the end of the season though and there is still hope of survival.

Well, what an awful game of football.  We deserved the win by actually having a couple of shots on target.  Both these teams will go down - we are getting progressively worse as a "team".

Hope and Pitman put in good shifts, Payne settled down and provided better cover second half.  Travers is a massive upgrade on Kovar.  Conroy was a fool.  Odimayo looked very suspect first half - needs to learn more of the dark arts of defending.  Thompson mixed bag - he started off so well at Ipswich, it's not taken too long to be ground down by this group.  Masterson looks OK but he's not as commanding as he needs to be at times, let a few long balls bounce.

Overall, the win gives us a chance - everything else is screaming relegation.

Sometimes the teams around you really are bad.

Wigan woeful. Town better (dealt with the 35 minutes with 10 men really well/comfortably).

blood sweat and tears win. Fair play to the boys tonight they put in absolutely everything and more.

Let's forget the ownership and manager issues for tonight the boys deserve the plaudits. I cant remember travers making a save for all of the pressure we were under but he was fantastic from corners and free kicks.

those critical of the style- its 3 points I dont care. I would take Sheridan's hoof style for the remaining months if it kept us up. it's the fact he ripped up a passing team and the results remained the same/worse.

every player tonight ran there arses off in terrible weather, on a pitch cutting up in a 6 pointer battle. let's leave off the negativity for tonight atleast.

BUT tonight it was the type of match where they were dealing with everything and they were in the zone and I wouldn't have risked it. pitman was shagged but we don't have anyone else on the bench i would want to hold the ball up and keep it in the corners like him.

Sheridan
- We deserved to win the game
- We had to grind it out. Like vs Bristol Rovers
- Got edgy when man got sent off
- It wasnt an ugly performance. But its a win.
- Good desire. Performances got us over the line
- Payne and Pittman singled out for praise
- Nice to win
- Conroy: Didnt know if it was a penalty. Ball was up in the corner, not sure how it got to the other end and got us a sending off
- Its not going to be about performances anymore. Its about getting out of trouble
- Its not about individuals. Its about the team. The work ethic was good
- Pittman scored important goal for us. Used his experience. Typical strikers finish. Led the front line
- Would have liked Smith to have scored
- Thought we'd go 442 as it was a game that we needed to go out and win
- I never want to get rid of players.
- DJ had a clause in his contract.
- Shez would have liked to have brought in more
- Only thing on his mind is, not to change team that much, but wants to win a game
- Need more performances where we are tight and keep clean sheets. If you keep clean sheets then you only need 1 goal
- Odimayo came back and played well tonight
- Sending off should never have happened
- When players are here, he wants them to come into training and work hard
- Never going to try to be funny, but when we come out after a defeat then journalists have to ask questions. Shez said he doesnt feel pressure, but he is under pressure.
- Garrick has pace and directness. But, an extra loan makes it difficult for Sheridan.

Why say that tonight?  We deserved it.

Because I watched the whole game. In the context of the division we're in. With the options we've got and the style we play. And I concluded we shaded a terrible game against a hopeless team. Then I saw the evidence that our players don't have a shred of respect for their manager, and vice versa.

Sorry if I burst your bubble, but that's where we are. Don't be deceived.

Payne:
- Massive win today and 3 points
- Need to use that to pick up momentum
- Worked well. Good shape. Good comms
- Had to do extra shift defending
- January is an up and down time with transfers.
- We've now got what we've got.
- Want to play every game
- Pitman scored and was a physical presence.
- We have not been good enough in all of the areas
- Perfect thing was having the game tonight rather than dwelling on departures
- Excited rather than nervous before the game
- It wasnt the prettiest of performances, but we did what we needed to do to get the points
- Clean sheet, shape and talking was the best thing tonight

Probably not worth it. It was a foul, and he was the last man, even if the whole thing was slow-motion powder-puff. Hodgetts and Hawes seemed to think he'd only get a one-game ban due to lack of malice, even though it was a straight red.

I thought Conroy had his shirt pulled by Keane earlier in the build up as he was running towards our goal, so I was expecting a free kick to us.
Also the “last man” argument is a fallacy - the law talks about denial of a clear goal scoring opportunity- and the payer was going away from goal at the point of the foul.
Ref was poor all night Payne’s card for the wind blowing the ball outside the corner quadrant was ridiculous too.
The players dug in and deserved a win - Wigan were very poor.
The game was awful though, in poor conditions to be fair.
After our recent run it’s amazing a single win takes us out of the bottom 4 - shows other sides are as poor as us.
Is this more of the hope that kills us?

Great win in isolation. Next three are Shrews H, Pompey A, Gas A. Thing now is that every game is a must win or at least not lose.
Come away from all those with wins  and I might feel better. Put in performances like tonight's and only get 1 or 2 points and writing will be on the wall.

feeling very flat for a win tonight. I guess the court case being set for a year away has taken the wind from my sails.

That said, if probably feel worse if we'd lost.

can't fault the effort, and the conditions/pitch were poor which didn't help quality. but we did what we had to. 3 points..

It would be interesting to know how the idea that a trial was happening this week gained traction.  Presumably, this came from someone considered to be ITK?

Feel very similar oh Batchy one. I'm glad Town won but I'm very flat about it. I think you're right, the hearing and possibly no resolution of the club until at least a year away.

It's imperative that Town stay up for the longer term future of the club existing. I think JS will be gone end of season regardless of outcome. It's down to the players now, those that are here to the end of season, to knuckle down and fight their way out of this. The fight seems to be there but I think they are going to have to direct this largely themselves and largely on the pitch.

A long and bumpy ride to go, we've all been here before but we never truly learn I guess. Especially when your support is largely unconditional. Let's not hope that it's the hope that ends up getting us...

:sigh: :breathe: :meh:

Go to the thread marked "Court Cases". Not the most recent one titled "Court Case" but the plural. There are fifty pages worth to mull over. I'm sure you'll find what you're looking for; considering you do appear to be a man of meticulous merit.

Unless a Grant planted one on him, in which case, kudos!

I thought Conroy had his shirt pulled by Keane earlier in the build up as he was running towards our goal, so I was expecting a free kick to us.

Good spot.

Not sure how VAR might have interpreted all this?

Obviously if a foul had been correctly given against Keane, then any goal scoring opportunity, clear or otherwise, would never have arisen.

The time between Keane's tugging and Conroy's foul was minimal enough for the referee to have been assessing whether he could let play continue for a potential advantage for STFC to counter rather than blow up needlessly.

Don't know how appeals work but, even were one unsuccessful but reasonable, could there be timing advantages with Conroy missing a less vital fixture against Pompey rather than the Shrews on Saturday?

We shall see soon enough.

B Rovers getting butt fucked by Accrington and their keeper Joe Day is getting absolute pelters on their forum.

Bullet dodged there it seems.
Never rated the keeper was disappointed when we were linked to him, Travers a massive upgrade on Kovar, Fryer and Day.

On the Wigan forum they are saying we are the worst side they have played all season, yet here we sit with 3 points, funny that.

FWIW I truly think Wigan are the worst side we have played in several season, they will do well to stay in L2 let alone L1.

And the views of Wigan fans...
Quote
I’m literally dying for something to celebrate. This is such turgid crap

Swindon simply look so much more up for it than us.

I genuinely believe we are much better than this. I think it’s a confidence thing.

Brett Pitman is a fat lazy sneaky bar steward.

This is definitely relegation form unfortunately. Completely flat performance. No fight and zero creativity. Front 3 starved of service and overall a pretty terrible performance for the second match in a row

Total and utter shite performance, and very, very questionable tactics to make matters worse. No positives whatsoever from this.

we are released from this purgatory, pitch was shite as well

68% possession and not a SINGLE shot on goal???

6 pointer, against 10 men who are in shocking form and we cant even manage a single meaningful shot at goal.

Second totally disgraceful performance in a row - you understand we lack quality but you can't defend the utter lack of fight in this lot. No movement, no intensity, no urgency, no fight when it should be a must win game. They werent remotley up for it, second to every lose ball with a man advantage it was shameful.

Performances like the last 2 are so awful I worry about them putting potential new owners off.

Not one shot on target against a poor side.

That was as bad a performance as I have seen for a long time. Really poor

we’d have been comfortably beaten by a Sunday League team tonight.

I’ve avoided criticising the team this season due to the circumstances, but fucking hell that was shite.

Completely deserve relegation with torrid performances like that.

Has to be the worst I have seen in years

This team will struggle in league 2

All in all it was a poor performance and had Swindon had the confidence and players that Blackpool had we would probably have shipped more goals as in my opinion this was a worse performance than the one against the seasiders.

No Wigan Athletic team has ever been gutless like we are now. The takeover must come soon unfortunately not soon enough to avoid certain relegation. It's what you get for having the heart ripped out of our club by gutless Asian bastards.

We were shocking tonight, of that there is no doubt, but the conditions were poor and did not help our passing game. You need a plan B when the pitch is crap (so much for me singing its praises the other week!) and the wind is up.

We made a diabolical Swindon side look like world beaters.

World beaters? They were fuckin awful too.. The level of this League is terrible.

Total rubbish Tonight, Swindon are shit and we totally failed to have a go, sideways passing straight out of the Butch Wilkins school of football, abysmal, toothless, shite, wank, garbage etc, etc.

And what makes it worse is that Swindon are shite

Both ourselves and Swindon will be playing League Two football next season, we are both as shite as each other, the only difference between the teams was that we had a keeper who throw one into the net for them.

They are right, though. We are a terrible team. But what’s becoming more apparent is that it’s just not us and Wigan that are terrible - there’s 7 or 8 similar shite teams.

My only worry is that I can’t really see us stringing a run of good results together - I’m not sure we can get much better than we are with Sheridan giving up possession in the hope we sneak a goal like last night. I can see a few of those clubs around us having the capacity to improve and throw off their present bad form.

Unfortunately for us, that’s as good as it gets.

I fear you are correct, I doubt we will win any back to back games until the end of the season, there is little quality being shown and no consistancy.

You are right, there are still a lot of teams as bad as us on the pitch but several have got more points already on the board which means we have to play catch up.

Wigan are easily the worst side we have played but TBH Rovers, Shrewsbury, Rochdale, Burton and Northampton have been as bad as us, add to that the very poor MKD and Wimbledon and it is whoever grabs a few wins, it could be a pluck any 3 from the other teams as Wigan are down for me.

We have gone from a side earlier in the season who scored goals but made horrendous defensive slip ups costing us wins to a side that have tightened at the back (a bit) with less individual errors but can't seem to score goals any more.

The games against the other STFC, Bristol Rovers and Northampton are absolutely crucial this month. If we can shithouse our way to three 1-0 wins then happy days. The other fixtures just look like they can be written off as 'anything we get is a bonus' territory. Pompey, Crewe and Lincoln couldn't be much tougher.

There are 8 teams who are terrible. We're one of them. Finish in the top half of that mini-league and we stay up, and we have an OK record against the teams down there. Beat Burton, Gas, Wigan, Dale. Drew at Shrews. Lost to N'ton and AFCW (when they were good).

15 points from the return fixtures plus bits and pieces elsewhere would give us a fighting chance.

Because he was last man, to the letter of the law the ref was correct. Conroy only has himself to blame, he had more than enough chances to boot the ball away and instead tried to be clever and dribble the ball away on a sticky pitch in awful conditions.

The law says nothing about being last man.

It's denial of a clear goalcscoring opportunity, which considering the Wigan player didn't have possession of the ball, leaves me thinking it was soft.

MK are not in the equation. They have top 6 form and were comfortably a level above us when we played
https://thefishy.co.uk/formtable.php?table=3

Shrewsbury are 3 points ahead with 3 games in hand, with top half form. Not looking in the picture at the minute but might nosedive depending on if Cotterill manages to recover from covid over the next month or so

So might be 8, might be 7. I wonder if Rochdale’s free scoring puts them at an advantage. Burton have recruited massively but too little too late surely?

Personally reckon it’s 2 from us, Cobblers and Wimbledon.

Wasn't including MK/Fleetwood - they're fine.

Shrews - lost two of their last four. If we somehow knick it, they're back in it. Games in hand when you're shit don't mean much.

So yeah, 7 teams into 4, with Shrews on top of that still potentially in it.

Don't want to get too far ahead of myself but it's entirely possible we will get more points on the board than four other teams by the end of the season.

May come back to bite me but I dont think we'll end up relegated mainly due to other teams being even worse than us.

My "serious" prediction I think was always for Town to be "champions"... of the top 8, of league C in L1. Aka, 17th. Which at present is probably the highest Town could hope to finish; realistically. Anything above the dotted line is imperative. Town can then get rid of the Jurassic one, probably the Hustling one and start from scratch (again), albeit in a league above.

And is not holding a pie.

They do the best pies in Wigan, where I used to work was near the factory and they had a sort of factory outlet counter there where we used to go and get dinner most days!

Blacklegs!

TBF my old man lived in Runcorn for 20 years and my step daughters dad lived between St Hellens and Leigh and they do make a mean pie up there, love a plain old meat n potato pie, you can't get them in the south at all, and they were always a a quid when chippies down here were charging £2.50+.

Our favourite chippy was at Harrys Fish Bar at Penketh between Widnes and Warrington, fantastic chippery with spam fritters the size of bin lids and enough chips to feed a family of 4 with one portion!

Met a few lasses from the likes of Wigan and Rochdale on lads foreign holidays.
Clearly when I was a younger lad. Without doubt they were always game.
