Title: Portsmouth v Swindon Town match day thread.
Post by: swindonmaniac on Monday, December 21, 2020, 08:00:03
Game off after two Portsmouth players tested positive according to today's paper, not sure if they are just guessing as not confirmed on the club website.    Good chance for some of the injuries to improve, only thing now, another dreaded Tuesday night game ?. Portsmouth  website confirms two positive case's but says all players will be tested in the next 24 hrs, that was 16 hours ago, so I presume the report I read has jumped the gun a bit, although it sounds like it will probably be confirmed later today.

Think "as it stands" is doing a lot of work there :)

Good opportunity for the players to get an unusual Christmas break, hopefully we will see the benefits of that in the two much more winnable games immediately after.

Thought I’d stick this here. Looks certain our TV game v Ipswich won’t go ahead - or, indeed, any football

‘Calls for 'football circuit breaker' after seven players at one club test positive for COVID-19 in a week

In an "alarming" development, Ipswich Town FC has recorded seven positive coronavirus cases in one week, with more cases expected to be confirmed later.

Only two confirmed cases had been reported at the club in the previous nine months. It is believed this week's cases are the new variant of coronavirus.

Responding to the news, the club's physio Matt Byard has called for a "football circuit breaker" before players can return to the game safely.

"In previous cases at clubs, the confirmatory source can normally be isolated down to a coach journey or a lengthy meeting indoors. We, however, have had the same protocols in place since we started pre-season training," Mr Byard told the Club website.

He continued: "We have tested all the playing and coaching staff and from the results, we can detect the level of infection and see the patterns emerging, however it’s the speed of the transmission that tells us it’s the new strain.

"We will be re-testing all the staff on Wednesday who have previously tested negative and I do have concerns that there will be more positive cases."

Unless lots of clubs players start dropping then there is no way they are putting the season 'on hold' at the present time as 1 club have got any cases.

I can see crowds being put on hold again though soon sadly.

Suspect Swindon will be moving to tier 3 or 4 next review with numbers sadly rising again.

Me too. That’s 3/3 for me - I wonder if it is because the TE is my first choice?

from the horses mouth (Danny Lee):

"There will be a majority of fans that will have gone to all 3. It is around 150-200 each week that we are oversubscribed so these will be rotated and that is random, but we are trying to work it so people who were unsuccessful for fleetwood will get MK and visa versa Wigan"

That sounds like we didn't sell that many season tickets if only 150 to 200 over subscribed.  After allowing for those in Tier 3, shielding or other reasons for not going. Maybe 3K sold tops?

There must be a fair number of us who live in tier 4 areas - I was fortunate enough to get one to go to the Fleetwood game but the move to tier 3 ( and now Tier4 ) means I’m excluded.
I think it will be behind closed doors again soon.

I know PPG is a worry, but didn’t they say at the start of this season that 75% of games had to be played for a PPG finish?
Or was that the premier league only?

Sounds like more could be in tier 3 or 4 as soon as Boxing day. We'll see if that's Swindon. I fear the worst..

Lets hope so,  do don't think it would look too good for us if PPG was introduced  Surprising what a difference three points can make,  Shrewsbury moved from 21st place last night up to 18th with their 1-0 win at Doncaster, their third  consecutive win on the bounce under Cotterill.
They were on the same points as us before last night,  we just need a decent win to act as a springboard but at the moment that still seems some way off.

Not just any old wins either, three away 1-0 wins, Hull, Lincoln and Donny.

That's how to shore up a defence, we are miles awsy from that or even a scrappy win.

Reinforces the point someone else made (think it was on one of the other matchday threads) as to how poor League 1 is this season, and how narrow the gap in terms of quality between top and bottom; doesn't take much for a side in freefall at the bottom to turn it round to get 3 away wins against the teams at the top. One's a fluke, three on the spin there's more going on

True, which makes the individual fuck ups all the more criminal. Too many wasted points.

Nah, it's good news. Never going to win it, at least not now, so better resting players for the much more winnable games against Franchise and Wigan immediately after.

All those players who might be available for the rescheduled game might have buggered off to Salford or beyond by then!  :/

Conversely we may have strengthened in Jan. TBH I'm not thinking about the rescheduled game. As it stands, Pompey doesn't look winnable, whether played now or in Feb/March/whenever, but Franchise and Wigan do. I'd rather take 4 points from those two, than knacker ourselves out with a heroic loss at Fratton Park.

Still, at least the rules mean there's no need to spend all day with in-laws, which would normally be the case on a football-less Boxing Day.

Small mercies.

Well, it will now be more a unique year (of an already unique year for all) for me as I think this will be my first year not watching/listening to Town on my birthday. It will be strange and there will be other football on of course but not Town.

We do indeed live in interesting times.

Didn't want to make a new thread and wasn't sure where to put this but seeing as the game is off...

Merry Christmas/Festive Wishes to all TEFers.

Cherish the people in your real (and maybe some over the ether) life, have a lovely day, reflect on others, remind yourself of what is good and raise whatever liquid at hand you have to those no longer here.

Feliz Navidad
