Title: Swindon v Fleetwood pre match chat and matchday thread
Post by: 4D on Monday, December 7, 2020, 13:11:25
PLEASE STOP CONCEDING SO MANY GOALS! PLEASE!!

Fleetwood seem very strong at home but not so good away.

If we improve at the back I'll go for a 2-1 win, if not then I predict another 2-0 defeat.

Who's going?

Feel like the fans being back is going to be a hindrance tbh. Hopefully the ones that get selected are not in a booing mood

Massive turnaround and a 3-1 win.  Supporters will be sat in a covid secure fashion.  Outdated views/sentiments will be openly expressed by 37.8 per cent of those in attendance.

At least Wellens new club wont have to worry about ticket allocation. They didnt even bother opening the ground yesterday evening for their Mickey Mouse cup exit at home to Leicester. (Muskwe scoring twice will earn him a loan move to Salford in January)

You tinker PV  ;)

In Tier2 they will but only really just as it'll depend on the fixture. They average just shy of 3k at home.

In Tier1 they definitely won't need a balot unless they get a big club (like Salford) in the cup  :D

Think Town averaged nearly 7.8k 2019/20 season, the 3rd highest in L2 but also higher than many in L1. This will be helpful in determining our attendance aggregated section of divvy-ed out payments. Town sit 12th out of 47/48 teams.

In the analysis session on Fleetwood, when the marking scenarios etc are worked out, might be worth putting a man on the opposition manager for any set pieces in the tunnel.

I’d give Anthony Grant the job.

Anyway, the court date for the latest alleged assault by the not so young scally will be next summer.
Innocent until proven guilty of course.

1-2 - decent performance ultimately undone by some form of defensive calamity. Sheridan shows Barton how it's done by nutting him through the dug-out

I’m feeling strangely confident @bout 3 points tomorrow. Be good to see Barton implode after a series of refereeing decisions go against his team.

We beat the scum, at the Kassam, coming from 1 down, in the last 10 minutes, including a last minute winner, with a centre half chucked up front.

I think it’s a safe bet our season has peaked.

I am led to believe that players are now having to place sealed bids to Power to get a starting slot.  Expect Luke Haines to miss out again as he lives in the Workhouse.

Pretty much same as, except I use what used to be the box room (or was optimistically described by the estate agent as "an additional guest bedroom" - possibly if you have lots of dwarfs coming to stay or people who like to get out of bed and leap straight out of the window). I am genuinely envious of the "office in the garden" setup. I had a mate who had that setup years ago and it's something I've always fancied.

I worked in the spare room when we first moved over here (much as ith yours you couldn get abed in there but probably not walk round it, its so small that in the extended house we have now its the en-suite to the new main bedroom!

The garden office (and house extension) was mainly down to the benefit of having a FiL who is a builder (and management consultant, now retired!) and thus bar some labouring and paying for all the materials his labour came for free, so only 3rd party tradesmen were plumber and sparky!

Office deliberately designed to be the max we could do without needing planning permission and formed in such a way to be a summer house post retirement, plus siting means I can watch the trains go by.

J Smith and Hope are both fit for tomorrow. Fryers maybe on the bench too according to Andrew Hawes. Considering Stevens was only ill and thus should be ok too, Give us a bit more flexibility and depth.

Can't really see past a defeat today TBH, would be great if we could grab a win, even tho the fishy people are 3 games without a win with 2 defeats and a draw prior to that they won 3 on the bounce scoring 11 goals in those 3 games.

Will be watching from a hotel room in the middle of Swindon about a mile from the CG, traffic permitting as we don't leave here until just after 12.

So no updates today will leave those honours to those that feel the need to.

Hopefully a few voices inside the ground may spur the players on, the possible return of COnroy and Lyden along with fitness tests for Zeki and Johnny Smith at least the injuries are slowly beginning to look up a bit.

Hope all those that wer elucky enough to have grabbed a ticket will see a great game and a win.

Probably depends largely on the team selection, which seems unpredictable at the moment.

Expect as defeat as we play well first half, and unravel and lose in the second half.

I think we will probably line up as ....

                        Kovar
Odimayo   Baudry    Conroy      Grounds
              Grant          Lyden
                     M Smith
DJ                  T Smith                Payne

Subs:
Fryer
Fryers
Curran
J Smith
Caddis
Haines
Parsons

Depending on fitness levels etc of the players coming back from injury.

Not the worst side we've put out that. Assume Grounds LB Odimayo RB. Lyden missing hopefully just precautionary.

Seems much ahead of schedule for Pitman on the bench, or did I misunderstand? Thought he was new year at best.

Decent side considering. Let’s hope Payne sits deeper to help Matt Smith and Grant and make a proper 3. And let’s hope they don’t have a nippy right winger - how far off / unfit are Iandolo and Hunt (preferable options at left back)?

And the main news of course, fantastic for Dion Conroy to be back and starting. Good luck to him.

Pitman - The long-termness of the injury was accidentally exaggerated by Sheridan confusing J Smith with Pitman. Sheridan said Pitman (rather than J Smith) could be out for 6 weeks.

J Smith on the bench - Glad to see him available again. He's healed quickly (but there again he's a young lad). Lets hope he is fully ready to come back. We are a different proposition when he's fit.

Lyden missing - Injured again would be a bad thing! Doing the same as Donahue (No grounds to think that other than my normal pessimism) would be VERY bad!

Fryers on the bench - Another LB or CB available is a good thing! Would be great to have some pace back again. Maybe a reason why Donahue was let go?

Conroy back - Lets hope his injuries are all behind him.

Still think we will lose this mind!

Hopefully we've had our share of bad luck now and we can crack on with the rest of the season with a more balanced squad.

Leutwiler looks like the kind of keeper you want at set pieces, comes and takes man and ball. Similar height to Kovar but looks a bit like he could snap our lad in half.

They're a good team, with few obvious chinks in the armour - defenders work as a tight unit, midfield strong with good out balls, strikers show good movement.

We're really suffering from the lack of wingers. Grounds offers zero threat and only ever kicks the ball on to someone else, Hope isn't getting anything on the left and with Odimayo having no cover, we don't even have an option on the right. We've got to get wider in the second half.

Well, that is probably the saddest 45 mins we have put together this season.  We have played worse, thanks mainly to shocking defending in games, but this one worries me.  It's the first time we have looked completely lost.  I'm struggling to think of any positives, which you could still do even when players were fucking up.

So, what was good - DJ and Odimayo maybe.

Other than that, I have no idea what our approach is to the game.  Formation is odd.  Hope is not much use on the left.  Baudry is all over the shop - so inconsistent even within a game.  Grounds - what is the point in this player this season, he's not really playing, is he?  We have managed to get M Smith completely out of the game, taking away our only real footballer.  Payne has nearly set them up twice but done very little for us and Grant is doing a decent impression of a Tree at times.

Still, somehow they've not bothered to take the game by the scruff of the neck and we are only 1 down.

Hmm.

0-1 HT

We looked OK for 20 mins then Fleetwood had a 5-6 minute spell of pressure. Well taken goal from Madden. Low corner from the right, Madden ran to the near post and beat Grant to the ball with a right foot shot that beat Kovar.

We then looked at 6s and 7s for 5 mins before coming back into the game as Fleetwood withdrew into their shell..

Defence looked ok. Conroy distribution poor. Baudry had 5 mins when he looked adamant on giving the ball away. Odimayo not having chance to get forward much.

Midfield being dominated. Game passing by Grant who looks to be ambling (I thought he was limping at one point). M Smith struggling to get into the game. Payne had a burst early on, bust has given the ball away twice runni g back to goal. But don't think he's touched the ball in last 15 mins.

DJ looking threatening but with no end product. Hope similar on the left. Looks quick but the ball keeps getting limped to him. Defender keeps winning challenges.

T Smith gained a few free kicks and held up ball ok at times. But no real threat.

It's not working but you can't accuse him of not trying stuff. We've set up a bunch of different ways in the games since he took over. On the other hand, he doesn't often change things after kick off so might well get to see this asymmetric thing for ninety minutes.

I suspect this might be a minority opinion, but I felt we were pretty good in the second half, especially after the substitutions. That's the first time I've seen Sheridan really change the game with his subs - probably not a coincidence that we also had our strongest bench in ages. Fleetwood are a good team, and if we hadn't fucked up easier fixtures it wouldn't be a loss we'd linger too long over.

Great to see Fryers back, great to see J Smith back. There's hope there, but we still have the major problem of looking a lot more threatening in build up play than the amount of goals we score would suggest. Need to get a few slices of luck and show a bit more intent earlier in the game.

Fleetwood sit 3pts off 6th place, have a +10GD and were a bit shit. We were just a tad shitter.

Not disgraceful and two games we've now played where we could have got something. Got to take even those half chances. DJ will be pissed at himself for missing that late chance.

Hold on and belt up, a long ride ahead but nice to know we have some players coming back. As mentioned above Zeki Fryers is at least a consistent CB. Get him and Conroy together (or just a bloody settled defence, that's such a key issue) and I think Odimayo/Caddis/Hunt can rotate at FB.

I'm fine with Grounds as a centre back.  He's ok defensively as a FB.   But where we are trailing, 2nd half, he has loadsa space and is sooo ponderous.  Had Caddis been given his space in the 2nd half there'd have been a higher potential for chances, free kicks etc.

Title: Re: Swindon v Fleetwood pre match chat and matchday thread
Post by: RobertT on Saturday, December 12, 2020, 17:03:59
I'm struggling to retain any optimism for this season - when we looked half decent we fucked up in defence too often and now we look limp and lost most of the time but less likely to completely fuck it up (Baudry aside).

Overall the second half was OK, but Fleetwod had the advantage and decided to play low risk.

Baudry very nearly gave them a complete gift.  I have no idea what is wrong with his head, he's up and down like a yoyo in the game.

Our shape was all over the shop for most of the game.

Feel sorry for Grant - he basically turned to stone in this game, his injury must be getting worse to handle.

Matt Smith must shake his head that he has to play with this lot at times.

Payne - I know he has his fans on here but he really looks like he flatters to deceive to me, and I don't think he has anymore to give than we are seeing.  Unlike J Smith, who looks like a good run and staying injury free would see him grow.

Positives, which are few for me.  Fryers coming back, Conroy looked assured but rusty, which you would expect.  M Smith started to take control - if we can somehow get a working partner next to him we might be able to improve.  J Smith is going to ensure we can create in games to come if he stays fit and DJ is on the edge of being decent.  Hopefully these returning players haven't come back too late - and we really do need Lyden to get fit and soon.

I fear the switch from Wellens to Sheridan has completely unsettled us.  Nobody seems to know what we are trying to do - it looks different each game.

Fine m8, just frustrated watching that !! I think everything loose got booted around the living room  ! Just hoping the block tackle didn't open up his knee again. Will hear from him shortly, dont think game plan worked at all and without sounding like a doting dad I think the subs changed the game and maybe should have been 10 minutes earlier.  They were on the ropes last 15 with space opening up across the whole pitch. Dont think the ball was moved quick enough but deserved a draw in the end, Matt was too advanced in my opinion and only dropped further back on the subs .

Given Fleetwoods position and the way we played later in the game gives me far more optimism for the second part of the season as they were nothing special.

Sheridan:
- Again its a defeat where we've played well
- First half very evenly matched
- Trying to praise the players as much as possible
- Its just fine lines where we are letting ourselves down
- Effort: Can't ask for much more from them
- Possession and efforts show we did well, but we didn't put the ball in the net
- But we lost. We know at where we are in the table its about winning not playing well
- Their goal should never have happened. Knew they had good set play delivery. Should have dealt with it better
- Second half dominated game possession wise
- Shame we didn't sneak one
- Neither keeper has had much to do
- Got in good areas
- We lack nous in the penalty area. Madden knows where the ball is going to land. We need better reactions and decisions
- (Got annoyed with interviewer) You don't know what formation we played? Started with 3-5-2
- Nothing wrong with the formation we played. We were playing against a good team and nullified them.
- Conroy off as a precaution. Fatigue from being out for so long
- J Smith wasn't fit enough to play for longer
- Good to have some better quality available
- Fans got behind the team today. Supporters will have seen the players tried hard. Shame we didn't get them a result.

Indeed. It isn't great at the moment, but it never always is. I cannot understand when people say things like "I've been a fan for over 25 years and this is the worse team/lowest point etc etc" Clearly dross because - although frustrating - we have certainly been in much greater trouble.

Sheridan thought that he started with a 3-5-2. I'm struggling to think who the three were, as neither Odimayo nor Grounds were playing in a 3, so maybe they were as confused as I was. And he said Donohue wasn't fit to play today. I think he still doesn't know who his players are.

Kovar 6/10: Nothing to do. Scared me with being caught out of position from 40 yards and then doing drag backs when the striker was upon him. Made one spectacular looking save, but think it was going wide.
Grounds 7/10: Looked very solid. Silly booking though. Didn’t see him do anything wrong. Couple of lovely balls in the second half down the left to Payne
Conroy 7/10: Looked assured. Distribution woeful at times though
Baudry 5/10: Three 5 minute periods where he looked intent on making mistakes.
Odimayo 6/10: Couldn’t link with anyone on the right. Solid enough defending. Played deep in first half and further forward in the second.
Grant 6/10: Game passed him by again
M Smith 6/10: Not at the races today. One nasty late tackle could have been a red on another day
Payne 5.5/10: Didn’t really get in the game except in short bursts. Although several chances fell to him in the second half. He kept shooting from wide left when he could have picked a pass.
T Smith 5/10: Held the ball up. Moaned a lot. Don’t recall him creating or having any chances
DJ 6/10: Some gorgeous turns in the first half. Caused them a few problems. Went to sleep for 20 mins, then upped it again towards the end. Shot wide in last 5 mins when a pass to Grant or Payne would have left a near top in.
Hope 5/10: Tried hard. But there’s no quality there.

Subs:
Fryers 7/10: Looked very calm and assured. Thought he’d hurt himself again at one point. Did well
J Smith 6/10: We couldn’t get the ball to him for his first 5-10 mins. When he got the ball he started to create and we threatened a little. But they then double and triple covered him. Obviously did their homework. (Not sure he is really 100% fit – Didn’t look as quick as normal)

Fine m8, just frustrated watching that !!

Given Fleetwoods position and the way we played later in the game gives me far more optimism for the second part of the season as they were nothing special.

Good to hear. Frustrating is a word  :hmmm:

My thoughts exactly, well I thought they were a bit shit, Town were just a bit shitter. Glimmers of light though. Your lad did well when came on. If a slight knock back, he'll likely miss Tues but ok for the following Sat? Zeki did well as did Conroy, DJ and M.Smith. All about getting a few players back and them all gelling.

In my own opinion I don't think Sheridan has much clue. The players certainly have ability (fitness aside) but then do they want to play for him? If anything I feel they are playing for Tommy Wright rather than Sheridan. If he is here long enough and keeps us up, that's fine but I certainly feel that this crop of players can do much more. They or something is not maximising that at present and as a fan I can only speculate on that being a number of factors. I know one thing, us Town fans deserve some kind of fucking good break.

M Smith:
-   Battled hard first half.
-   Apart from goal dealt with it well
-   Couldn’t create a clear cut chance
-   Can take positives out of this and Gills. Nice we are playing well but need to create chances and take them
-   DJ has added a lot. Driving at players. Good that he’s back
-   Had to adjust to what Sheridan wants. There are positive signs there though
-   Good to have fans back. First experience of fans at a game (coming from Arsenal U23s)
-   Have to adapt to closed doors at Doncaster on Tuesday
-   On four bookings. Didn’t answer the question about whether it changed the way he played.

I think Fleetwood are a good team. They played within themselves after they scored. They kept us at arms length and didn't have to do anything more. Its good that we looked solid at the back, but we need to score the odd goal to stay up.

We are in a relegation battle and I dont think we are particularly well equipped to win it. I fear we will play some nice stuff in patches but will end up frustrated more often than not.

It was great to be back today.

The game was shit. Fleetwood didn't do anything much, they didn't need to do anything other than score, be organised and kick in with game management.

We were totally devoid of any attacking threat. Lump it to Tyler Smith doesn't work - something Wellens also tried. I'd have put Hope along side him myself.

Yes we had a flurry at the end. Sort of. Yes it was a game we could have got a point from. But make no mistake, today's performance was relegation standard.

I think if Fleetwood are a good team then we shouldn't have so much to worry about when/if we have a fully fit squad?! Surely we also should have some wiggle room to add a couple (or three) of players in the Jan (hahaha) window?

Think Fleetwood are just an average shithousey L1 side that will end up around mid-table. The fact they are 9th and 3pts off a play-off spot, Hull are top, and Lincoln are 2nd and we have pretty much matched them (or at least not far off), tells you everything we need to know about this division. It's either really good or really shit.

Just spoke with him and his knee is ok, it was a pressure twinge from the block tackle and he is about 70-75% fit  So just needs some more training as he has only had 2 sessions in 3 weeks and his speed will increase dramatically. Didn't open up fully but glad to see he made an impression.  I am really hoping we can get a full squad fit in the next 2-3 weeks as it will really help and also put pressure on increased performances from individuals who don't want to lose their shirt.
I don't think we have fielded the same team for any period of time... settled teams win well....so here's hoping we go on a run now of positive news ...

It was OK to be honest.

There were a few chants, but with 2000 there it also felt a bit pre-season in atmosphere at times. Or maybe the same as normal, but quieter!

But I feel so privileged to have been there. A little bit of very much needed normality.

One thing, the DRS tannoy at the Bank end was kaput so we couldn't hear any announcements. FYI They try to clear you out at the end row by row

That's good to hear. I would imagine another sub appearance on Tues (without risking), then up to speed and about there (fingers crossed) to start come Sat 19th v Charlton? No question about how helpful a fully fit J.Smith can be for Town.

It is a key point. Which has been typed, spoken and listened to numerous times. Even a settled defence would be more comforting. The manager can't help injuries and life etc but it is his job to figure out how to manage that scenario. Desperately need as settled a side as possible. The football played is stark contrast to last season - usual when you go up a level, your standard or the standard at that level improves. Not sure I've seen masses of evidence of that yet (at Town or in L1 on the whole).

Of course you will be privy to conversations and knowledge via your lad, more so than many of us will be. I obviously won't press you on anything you hear via Jonny - that wouldn't be right to but it wouldn't be human of me (or anyone) to not be even marginally curious of a penny for your thoughts ;)

We're so passive. Results happen to us and everything is just on a flip of a coin. We weren't bad. We weren't good. We were just.... there.

If we stay up, it'll be in spite of Sheridan. The lopsided system is strange, the subs were too late and uninventive and his post-match comments are just plain weird.

If we keep enough players fit they might, as individuals and with enough teamwork and leadership on the pitch, find a way to win enough games.

The perfect away day for Fleetwood. A 1-0 win without breaking sweat or getting out of first gear. We asked zero questions of them. So, so easy.

The search for shape and movement continues.
Difficult to find many positives from that. Slow, ponderous and predictable.
Decent Start for Dion Conroy and Some much needed pace from Zeki Fryers.
Jonny Smith added some much needed width and created chances.
The Fleetwood keeper should have sat down and leant against the post for most of the game.
That front line was woeful and sadly we can’t change it.

Above all great to be back though but we are sleepwalking back to League Two.

Pleased to see Conroy, Fryers and Dj coming back.  I had hoped we would throw Pitman on for the last 10 to at least give us a chance of a goal.

I will be pissed off if we don't get out of this as there is some real dross in this division and it wouldn't take a whole lot of changes in Jan to stay up in my opinion.

Very much torn between the "Fleetwood were terrible and look at where they are in the table, a few more back and we'll be fine" rose-tinted view and the "if we can't get points from games like that we're fucked" relegation doomster. Think I'm probably tilting more to the latter tbh, we look like we have settled into a habit of losing, sadly.

But it was still nice to be able to sit in the ground with my lads and watch a game of actual football. Kudos to the club for making the protocols etc pretty seamless. It felt a bit pre-season and difficult to generate much of an atmosphere but that can't be helped I suppose and it was nice to be there. If only to appreciate the fact that the lino on the DRS side was, from behind, the spitting image of Wallace of Wallace and Gromit fame. Once you'd seen that, it hugely enhanced our enjoyment of the afternoon.

Plenty of endeavour and some neat tidy football.

But how on earth are we going to score a goal? What pattern of play are we looking for? Through balls? Crosses? Cut backs from the byline?

We don’t seem to know what we are trying to do with the ball and usually ends up with DJ or JS having a hopeless pot shot.

We’ve been crying out for Lyden to add balance to the team all season so the fact he wasn’t on the bench again today is a big worry.

tbf, he seems to be trying to get us to be more solid at the back, and build from there. We're not shipping 3s and 4s any more, but it's come at the cost of creativity going forward and we're still not picking up enough points. If he can keep the improvements at the back, and revive the creativity going forward, we will be fine. Remains to be seen if he can pull that off

We are short of quality upfront.
If we can’t add to that we are in serious trouble Mate.
No structure or purpose to our play and the addition of Jonny Smith lifted us. We simply don’t have a League One standard forward.
Yeah, don't disagree. Just trying to argue the case that you can see what Sheridan is trying to do, albeit not sure Wellens left him the squad to do it with. (He says in hindsight, I was quite optimistic about the squad at the start of the season)

Today was very meh.

Only positives were Zeki and Dion coming back and looking decent.

We seem to have lost all the creativity we had in the first few weeks of the season when we genuinely looked dangerous every time we went forward. today it was all too slow.  I know Sheridan has tightened us up a bit but hopefully if we can get Dion and Zeki back we can afford to be a bit more gung ho in attack. We are still lacking a striker, preferably one who can hold the ball up properly and knows where the net is. We don’t have this person at the moment. Not from what we’ve seen so far anyway.

Bit of a shutter that Lyden is injured again. Grant really does look spent at the moment. A shadow of last seasons player.

As someone said earlier. January could be interesting if we have a pot to piss in.

One further thing to note.  Our bench looked pretty sad today.  Barton and his cronies seemed to have energy about them, life and spirit.  We seemed to have a depressed looking Sheridan and the other bald geezer.  Was all a bit sad.  Seemed to infect the performance.

Communication is not one of Sheridan’s strongest attributes unfortunately.

Just watched the highlights (again) on Quest...they showed the wrong L1 table. Must've been from last week as they had us in 20th and Pox in 21st. The best bit was Colin Murray saying "Oxford move out of the bottom four and are replaced by Swindon..."

Probably one of the few times that would be a benefit of being blind.

Looking for somewhere to live rather than delivering sound bites to the Adver. Disgraceful!
Hope he’s not looking at somewhere anyway near Swindon.

It was good to be back in the CG yesterday, even though we couldn’t sit in the Arkells as normal.  Certainly beats iFollow.

I thought Fleetwood looked a competent side - passed the ball well and a lot of pace and movement of the ball when in possession. Up front Madden is a proven goal scorer at L1 / L2 level. After an even first 15 mins I thought they were in control, and it felt as though a goal was coming in the few minutes before it did - there were a couple of moves where our midfield didn’t t track runners giving up shooting chances. The goal was another piece of poor defending- failure to track the run of Madden, who has a free shot from inside the 6 yard box.

We were better after half time - slightly more goal threat, although not many clear cut chances and again their keeper had too few saves to make. They also had experience on the bench - whilst ours looked a bit stronger this week, I’m not sure some of them were totally ready to play a full game. Also thought the foul on Hope was another stonewall penalty not given.

Some positives - Conroy and Fryers both coming back to fitness, playing well and having the opportunity not to rush them into playing 90 mins too early in their recovery.

I am worried about the possibility relegation though - yesterday was yet another game like last week at Gillingham in one respect -we aren’t getting anything at all from games we ought not to lose. On the balance of play we deserved a draw again yesterday But they took 3 points. It comes back to defensive mistakes and clean sheets being critical.

For me the problem is blatantly obvious... we have no midfield.

Tyler smith has prove he can score goals if you can get him into the box, he isn't a target man and struggles to hold up the ball.  Pitman can score goals if you get the ball in the box, he can knock on a header but again you need chances.

All to often we play down the wings and then meet a dead end as there are no options in the middle of the park, so we have to pass back up the same wing and recycle possession.

On Saturday there was a gaping hole in the middle of the field, grant held back to protect the back line but there was nothing in front of him to pass to. So we got left Matt smith trying to wonder pass his way through the game or a lot of very muted runs down the wings.

If we had a decent midfield for the defenders to rely on I am certain that we would see less mistakes. At the moment its 10 oppositions players attacking 4 /5 town defenders whilst the rest of the town squad wait for the ball to be won back.

I'm inclined to agree.

Too often teams just go through our midfield as though they are not there. We were close to conceding another from that on Saturday when one of their players got the ball in their own half and came forward unchallenged. That obviously then puts the defence under more pressure. We're also not pressing up high, which often works well for us, and I think this might be down to the gaps in midfield at the back.

As for attacking play - we're not creating enough in terms of chances on goal but we are still getting into good positions around the box. I reckon we might need some physicality up front and Broadbent caused problems against Oxford and in the first half against Crewe. I'm not suggesting Broadbent plays there, but a striker with some physicality. Maybe even Pitman. I know he's not being doing well so far but I'm sure there's a player in there.

I think it was Tommy Wright who was talking about a few tweaks to the squad in the window. I reckon we already have a decent enough squad but need a couple more pieces to hold them all together as a team. Wellens did leave us rather unbalanced.

Spot on this. From the current squad our midfield options are Anthony Grant, who is playing every game with an injury so is at best operating at 70% of last seasons form , Matt Smith, who has done tremendously well, has certainly made a positive impact but is hampered by having a lack of support around him, and  finally Jordan Lyden, who seems to be permanently injured. Haines is clearly not fancied by Sheridan, otherwise would have had a game or 2 by now.

We need a 3 in midfield in this league, so are making do with Jack Payne, who flatters to deceive in the more attacking midfield role. We have not replaced Doughty who imo offered much more than Payne does. Until Lyden gets fit, I feel we may either revert to the Caddis experiment to play alongside Grant or indeed try Odimayo in that defensive central midfield position, freeing up Smith to play further up the pitch, as he will offer more assists/direct goal threats than Payne.

As many have said on here, we have a very lopsided squad with loads of defensive and wide forward options when all are fit, but a lack of midfield players. Also if T Smith is going to play, you have to play another forward up top with him. All in all it's a buggers muddle!

What we don’t have in midfield is someone who can dictate games & retain possession, control the tempo, pull the strings.

Grant can protect. Smith can create. We just don’t have the number 8 to go between the 4 and the 10.

At times Grant looked barely mobile on Saturday. Doesn't look fully fit to me. Think it was recently mentioned he was carrying an injury/playing through the pain.

I think they hinted at an ankle problem causing him pain that he is playing through - it's not fixable through surgery was how it was described, so maybe something like Tendonitis?

Grant is injured. Smith has played way too much football. Both of them are 50% of where they can be and we're desperate to rotate in there.

We're just drifting towards the rocks at the moment, rudderless.

100% this. Didn't quite realise how bad Grant's injury is until I saw him play on the weekend. Hobbled through the game

Grant's injury seems to be one of those weird ones where running at full pace he seems largely OK but at low speed (jogging/walking) he seems to be struggling. It must be the starting and stopping where there's pain and imagine the cold is making it worst, he needs a couple of weeks rest but we just don't have any option but to play him.
