Title: Covid: The Oasis - Gone.
Post by: Batch on Wednesday, November 18, 2020, 10:57:14
Nearly put this in the Covid thread, but like it or loathe it The Oasis is a Swindon institution and many people will be affected.

https://www.swindonadvertiser.co.uk/news/18879770.oasis-leisure-centre-closing-permanently/

I guess there is a chance someone will bail it out, but the council can't exactly be cash rich right now.

Reg is AWOL at the moment isn't he? I'll put his hat on then.

Part of the pay off for Swindon being an ever-growing down was always the manucipal facilities that would go with the expansion. It might always have been particularly fashionable, but generally pretty good.

Unfortunately this doesn't stand up to the maximising of profits for private enterprise. Nothing like the link centre or oasis would get built with any of the new estates on the outskirts. And now we have the rolling back of what was previously there.

Loved going on the Dome Busters (being 'brave' enough to go on the great white) and the wave pool as a nipper.

Amazing that trying to run a council leisure facility as a business has failed. Who would've thought.

TBF it's not "gone". The private operator has pulled out of the contract so won't continue to run it. The facility is still there if someone can be found to run it. Like SBC, for example.

I assume it has been heavily updated since I went there 30+ years ago, most leisure centres of similar age up here are being torn down and replaced with new ones, apart from the one in our local town which was built about 10 years back, won loads of design awards and then was ripped down after about 5 years because no one used it and the building was defective!

FWIW the private/charitable ownership model which seems to be failing at the Oasis also seems to work pretty well round here.

Is there any viable way back for it? Genuinely sad about the news. Sounds like a lot of people on here have some great childhood memories of the place (and wishing the clock on your time left would just slow down, as well as freezing your balls off in the queue up to the domebusters). I went back for the first time in about 25 years with my boy a few years ago and as tired as it had become, it then became his first choice day out. He loved it, even though we’re out of towners and Swindon is a bit of a drive. With the right investment, it’s difficult to see why there wouldn’t be demand for it. But investment in leisure at the moment..... well, hardly a safe bet is it.

I’m sure people will be upset it’s closing.

I definitely spent more time playing football on the ‘Astro turf’ round the back than in the actual Oasis. I’m somewhat convinced it’s the main reason why I get so much pain in my knee joints these days.

I won’t look back in anger though...

Maybe the trust could buy the Oasis instead of the County Ground? Reckon STFC might manage mid-table in a local 5-a-side league.

Yeah, these puns should just fade away.

I see the local councillors have made their feelings known about the closure on the facilities. It’s a travesty that a local leisure facility is closed - where are all the starving kids going to go now.

Not forgetting it was their government that sold it off in the first place.

Whatever.

It was the council not the govt, but yes it was those same councillors so your point still stands.

Given away, not sold, if I remember corectly. On the basis of milestones of investment and development being met (they weren't)

As noted previously the model (passing to a charity to run) is working very well in most of the Country, not sure why its gone to shit in Swindon, albeit I imagine the bottom line will be that the Oasis needs a lot of cash spending on it.

I think (not got time to google my own fact checking and it's been a while), it was given to an investment/development company (on the basis of the milestones) who then lease it to the charity,

"Historic England has added that it will support Swindon Borough Council and the owners to address the condition of the building and find a sustainable future use."

Surely Swindon and the surrounding towns and villages have enough people to warrant spending some cash to bring it back to it's former glory?

Hopefully it doesn't become like the Battersea Power Station and get surrounded by horrible un-affordable glass covered flats and stupidly expensive coffee shops.

There is a slight difference in that the Council own the Freehold, so they do have the gift of development in their own hands.  The question will be whether or not people want money to be invested in the facility for the greater good of the Town - they've paid for a car park to be built in the past decade, so why not?
