Is there a game on tonight ??.  Shows how far we've fallen recently.  I know it's a nothing game but thought there would have been something on here by now.   Mickey Mouse cup,  if fans were allowed in
the costs of putting on tonight's game would probably have exceeded ticket sales anyway !!.

I'll probably be watching with a perhaps naive hope of taking some positive feels from it. I don't have to pay extra so I won't be contributing to that abomination of a 'competition'.

Why do we do it to ourselves?

I've ordered my digital slice of Papa John's Pie to keep up my 100% iFollow record. Pumped is an over-statement.

Are we due any returnees. Just something to give a chink of light in the dark, dank, eternal nightime that this season is fast becoming. The pits of football hell devouring our optimism, sucking the life out of each of us.

I won a free iFollow pass specifically for this game so I may actually watch some of it. FGR would usually play a few youths in this (they had two U16s play in one of their previous Trophy games this season) but their U18s have all been put into isolation after a COVID outbreak so they will have to play a strongish side, FWIW.

It’s a Tuesday. Not much else to do.
Swindon are playing under lights (although not low energy as yet).
What’s not to like.

Higher levels of energy needed on the pitch tonight.

Could be episode 3 of the Taylor Curran show, but the showrunner has done a runner.
The series could be cancelled after tonight despite a high rotten tomatoes rating (but not in a good way).

Hope the lad has a decent game if selected.

Could do with a win to stop the rot.

Fair enough.

I've only ever eaten PapaJohns once, in Bangalore. Not bad either.

In Ireland I believe that PapaJohns has some kind of agreement with Supermacs, as the two are generally available in the same place. Supermacs being a fairly decent burger offering, like a good Macdonalds.

Sorry, going completely off tangent wittering on about fast food.

I think its between Salford and Pompey and I think was sacked off, but that could be wrong.

Last season's Scottish FA Cup final will be played just before Christmas. The current Hearts goalkeeper Craig Gordon was playing for Celtic earlier in the competition and now faces them playing for Hearts as their FA have deemed it acceptable, even though its technically the same tournament and he should probably be 'cup-tied'

I've just downloaded, I wasn't aware this existed. Luckily didn't win an ifollow pass for the pizza dough trophy but I'll keep trying, will be handy for the league for sure.

Thanks for advising Batch.

Red.... As with Swindon :)

I will also tell you a true fact which is really good,  that when Jonny played for Tranmere and he scored against Swindon at home both myself and his mum booked the Hospitality package and we have never met such a nice crew of supporters both in the lounge and in the Directors box. Also, the Ex Player who run the Mic in the Hospitality with the Host was fantastic and we had a great laugh and the best food by some distance !! Although the MC at full time did give me some stick for him scoring .... Great Club...  and made up he is here....  :) There is goals to come..... every faith....

Most meaningless match in a long long time, result doesn't matter but a better performance would be good, some sort of response to the shitshow on Saturday.

Good luck to Broadbent if he does get a game, he was treated pretty unfairly by Wellens from what I hear.

I will be watching as the wife will be watching Cats the film and I would rather por salt into a festering anal fissure than watch that, the same sometimes applies to watching the Town.

No injuries please, a few goals and a few more players to put in a shift would be nice.

Win lose or draw it doesnt matter but just play like you care a bit tonight.

So does this mean we line up like this?

                      Fryer
Hunt Odimayo Curran Baudry Iandolo
          Haines      M Smith
J Smith                      Stevens
                  Pitman

With Hunt and Iandolo as wingbacks so 5221 or 3421

Quite flexible going between 5 at the back when defending and 3 when attacking with Hunt and Iandolo bolstering midfield with neither having to bomb down the wings with 2 wingers playing in front of them.

That said its rare that we play with 3 centre backs and when we have under Wellens it has never really clicked, so far.

Harsh based on 25 mins tonight.

Pitman, no, based on all his time so far.  It may be he is properly unfit, and I know he has never been mobile, but this looks like someone who is cheating their final pay slip.  As I say, he may ram this down my throat.  I've always thought he was a decent player, but he looks like he has Nalis' legs, based on how old Nalis would be now.

At the moment yes, but he is carrying a nasty groin injury mixed with not playing for nearly a year. Saturday he annoyed me but I won't write him off yet unlike many on here have (no not aimed at you Rob) but after Saturday you would think he is the devil incarnate or Joey Beauchum MK2.

He needs to get fit and then that will be a fair assessment, as it stands he is our only (marginally) fit striker at the club.

I’m not giving up on him yet. I have two Pompey mates who wax lyrical about him so I think he might come good with match fitness and if we play to his strengths.

I agree but hes the less injured striker, something that has to be aimed at Wellens for not strenghtening in the window, as Power said he had another striker lined up and Wellens vetoed it on deadline day.

We have Harry parsons as the only other recognised striker currently at the club, he is a small nimble striker but doesn't play the right role that we currently play.

The only other option is to play with no striker at all but thats not how Wellens/Hunt/Wright like to play. Its not worth potentially ruining a youngster by playing him as a square peg ina round hole so early in his career.

I fully understand where you are coming from but the harsh truth is that we sadly lack strikers at the club at all levels.

Against a sack of shit.

I'd normally focus on the three or four clear chances to score we had, but, I'm in a bad mood with Swindon right now.   The team has just lost every ounce of impetus from last season and seems utterly disjointed.  I'd say lacking in focus as well.  Matt Smith and maybe Johny aside, the team just is all a bit meh at the moment.  I think there are many reasons for this and I have sympathy for anyone trying to look like life is normal right now.  Ah well.

I think we are all angry with the team at the moment, but trying to take the positives from small steps. Fryer, Stevens, J Smith, M Smith, Odimayo all looking worthy of a place, Baudry and Pitman are playing better than recently too.

Its bloody difficult staying any form of positive at the moment though I agree.

Jeez. Would it kill you you to give anyone any credit?

Haines hasn’t looked out of place, Matt Smith his usual busy and creative self, Fryer looks better than Kovar, Broadbent getting involved, Baudry keeping it simple and Jonny Smith very dangerous here and there.

Ok?

Fryer - If he doesnt play on Saturday its for non-football reasons!
Hunt - Solid and came forward well
Iandalo - Made a couple of good runs before going off injured.
Broadbent - Solid and unspectacular
Curran - Best game in a Town shirt
Baudry - Only noted one time where he rode his luck
Odimayo - Played well at right back. Offered a threat on occasions going forward
Haines - Decent debut. Tired and invited pressure to the defence late on
M Smith - Played well and popped up everywhere. Seen him play better, but is head and shoulders above his colleagues
Stevens - Should have scored at least 3! Had Andy Williams old shooting boots!
J Smith - Scared defenders all night. Still takes it too are on occasions and runs into trouble. A few weak shots too. Linked well with Pitman (and M Smith and Odimayo)
Pitman - Held play up well. Had several good chances. Unlucky not to have scored. Prob best game for us.

Hunt:
- Delighted how they played, the character and chances created
- Pleased at everyone
- Their keeper made some good saves
- Everyone ran their socks off
- Cant sit and dwell on the past
- Boys on the pitch did themselves proud
- Baudry, Broadbent and Haines were all tired at the end
- Fryer: He was great tonight. Haven't seen too much of him. Need to be careful with him as he is coming back from a bad injury. Will talk to Mildenhall
- Change in shape was to be more defensively sound but still able to create
- Losing Iandalo a blow. He felt a 'pop' which is never good
- Broadbent: Was very good and played 60 rather than 30 mins. Hes a good player. he plays things simple. No worldy passes or cross field passes. Can see him having a role as we are short of defenders.
- Broadbent, Curran and Baudry all played well
- Curran was tired at the end. Tonight he was really good. For the goal, he did his bit to block off the keeper
- That was the Brett Pitman I knew. He threw himself about. But, it comes down to fitness. He's still not fully fit, but hes getting there
- Longer term: Hasnt had a minute to himself to think about it.
- Loved tonight and what will be will be.
- We trained this morning and will be back in tomorrow morning for those who didnt play. The players from tonight will be back in tomorrow afternoon

As did I. A few thoughts:-

- A back 3 made us more solid. Would keep that for Sat with Cads coming in for Curran, Ak in one of the CB roles.
- Broadbent made a difference & look in good condition. Has he been fit longer than we were lead to believe. I think so.
- Fryer must play Saturday. Looked assured & the back 3 didn’t look nervous. Think Kovar needs to be take out of the firing line.
- Stevens to play off Pitman as I think he can do that role & has pace to burn
- Finallly, this is Swindon after all so one swallow doesn’t make a summer (or perhaps winter).

As always, I pay very little attention to this tournament or the games but as others have said, there are some positives to have come out of that game, given we are in such a rut.

* A clean sheet at last and a very good performance from our keeper (albeit our backup keeper)
* Tom Broadbent, a competent centre back at this level coming back in, scoring the winning goal and tweeting a happy message on twitter, could be an important squad player this season.
* Much better team and individual performances all over the pitch
* Winning breeds confidence

Normally not arsed with these games, but with us being in such a state of flux, was keen to see how things develop.

First thing first, I was quite strong in my belief that we'd never go 343 with RW but Hunt really got it to work. I'd defo be looking at it for Saturday. It gave us more solidity, our FBs are perfect for it (Iandolo was excellent until he got injured) and we have enough CBs with the flexibility to play it.

Players wise:
Fryer - Couldn't have done much more. Good under the high ball, string of solid saves, good distribution. Can we do any harm putting him in for Saturday?

Hunt, Iandolo, Odimayo, Baudry... all solid enough.

Curran didn't look out of place for once.

Big Tom - I forgot how much of a beast he is. Physically a different level to the rest of our CBs. Clearly blowing at the end, and not sure he's ready to play 90 in the league, but right back among our options that's for sure.

Haines and M Smith kept it simple. With the 2 in there in a 343, their game was simplified. Win the ball, keep the ball. Smith again showed great class in transition and some of his passes were sublime.

The front 3. Pitman was better. Much better. Not great, but did manage to use his body and bring the speed merchants into the game. Unlucky not to score too - unbelievable save from the keeper. Stevens and Smith are so dangerous but between them were wasteful in front of goal. The shape gives us options though.

All in all, the shape was super interesting and I hope we stick with it. I'd like to see us go with the following on Saturday.

                Fryer
    Caddis Baudry Odimayo
Hunt  A Grant  M Smith  Donohue
    Stevens  Hope  J Smith

Moving forward, Iandolo and Donohue are great options as LWB. Lyden in for A Grant when he's fully fit. Zeki as the LCB would be ideal and a little further ahead, Conroy is perfect for the middle CB. We've got plenty of options across the front 3 - T Smith and DJ would be lethal in those wide forward spots too, with a bit more quality in front of goal perhaps.

I think he has the potential to play anywhere. A season in the defence will do him good long term but he could be a beast of a CDM.

Title: Re: FGR v Swindon matchday thread
Post by: Peter Venkman on Wednesday, November 11, 2020, 10:03:55
Odimayo is a big unit with a fair amount of pace, hes not great in the air but reads the game well, his passing is 75% excellent but he often makes silly passes that put players in trouble, that will come with age and experience, I feel he has the potential to play anywhere accross the back and middle of the park and could well be utilised in other positions.

On the ball he reminds me of Conroy, utility defender who can play central defensive midfield too.

He is improving with every game sometimes though he still needs to play the simple pass rather than launching a 40 yard upfield pass, play the ball to Matt Smith and let him do that job.

Isn't it great to see players that we develop playing in the first team. I have generally had high hopes of Scott Twine, and its great to see him shining in Lg2 at Newport.

Unfortunately our very best academy players generally get picked off by Premier league sides very early and we never get to see them blossom at STFC - thinking Bogle (aware Derby are not a prem side) and Ifil recently

Yeah its so rare that in my time as a Town fan that any player has come through from the youth team and made a genuine impact on the first team.

We have lost as you state the likes of Walcott, Ifil and Bogle to teams further up the ladder but the last truly good youngster that came through the ranks was IMO Paul Rideout in 1982.

Yes we have had a few half decent ones but in the main they just make 50 to 100 appearances and disappear, before Rideout there was Stroud, Trollope, Moss etc but since the 80s they have been few and far between to say the least.

I have hopes for Twine still but he needs to find his best position as we have played him wide left, attacking midfield, striker, number 10 and he has never really fitted in. At Newport he is playing a free role behind the striker, an attacking midfielder style, similar to how Payne plays for us.

Fitzroy Simpson and Nicky Summerbee in the 90s both ended up moving to Man City in the PL and had good careers.

Most do seem to end up at Chippenham or Supermarine though.

Yeah true, we don't have a great track record as has been stated many time son here.

Haines looked to have a strong build and played the easy pass all game which TBH is all that is needed for a defensive midfielder, something Grant does so well, nothing too spectacular just tackle and complete passes to a teammate.
