Title: Swindon Town v Darlington matchday thread
Post by: Peter Venkman on Saturday, November 7, 2020, 10:52:28
Well nobody else seems to want to start a matchday thread here we go.

FA Cup, we are pretty poor at the moment, we have no manager, only 3 wins in 12 matches with 9 defeats in all competitions, we are playing a team on the up from 3 divisions lower than us in the league pyramid....

What could possibly go wrong?

The fog comes down with Darlington 1-0 up and they get awarded the win😃

We’ll continue the trend of conceding early goals, claw one back but Darlo will hold on to ensure we’re in the first batch of any highlights show.

1-2, in front of 1,500 Darlo cut-outs.

Minutes under belts of returning players top of the pops here?  Has to be a big priority to try to get to Rd 3 to though.

Pitman to get 60 minutes?  Will we get 15 minutes out of Lyden?  Is Broadbent ready to go from the off?

Nice bit of rotation, minutes in the legs and we’ll pump them. 3-0.

Strongest available selection today if possible.

We're only in it for the money.

Haven't been in a position to watch anything since Burton Albion. So a match day pass all squared away and into round 2 with a convincing 4-1 win, we just can't keep a clean sheet.
Then another non league opponent to ease ourselves into the plum tie of round 3 away to Premier league opposition.

In 17 previous matches with Darlo we have won 8, drawn 2 and lost 7 times, scoring 24 and conceding 14 times.

In the 8 matches at the CG between the sides Swindon have won 6 times with 1 draw and 1 defeat, scoting 17 and conceding just 3 times. 3 of those matches have ended as 4-0 wins for Town. The last time the sides met at the CG in 2007 it ended as a 1-1 draw.

Darlington currently sit in 15th place in National League North with 1 win and 2 defeats so far this season. Beaten away at Fylde 1-0, home to Kidderminster 3-0 and won 3-0 at Curzon Ashton most recently.

They have beaten Prescott Cables 2-2 (won on pens), Tadcaster 6-1, Cambridge City 2-0 so far in the FA cup run all at home.

Darlington have a few notable ex league pros playing for them....

Nicky Hunt who at 37 has been round the block a few times most notably with Bolton, Birmingham and Derby with over 130 appearances in the Prem with Bolton.

Tony McMahon is 34 who played in the Prem for Middlesborough, also played for Blackpool, both Sheffield clubs and also had a spell at our esteemed yellow neighbours among others.

And the previously very highly rated diminutive striker/winger Adam Campbell, touted as the next big thing from Newcastles academy but has drifted lower down the leagues with Carlisle, Fleetwood, St Mirren, Hartlepool, Gateshead, Notts County, Morecambe and now Darlington yet is still only 25 and played for the England teams up to U19 level.

Going to be an interesting afternoon.

A phrase which implies that the subject is telling lies.
Joe: "I fucked five girls last night, one of them was paris hilton".
Paddy: "Your balls are beef mate".

Scottish version of fuck off, pronounced 'git tay fuck'.

tricky one

if kovar had been firing on all cylinders you'd say fryer.

if we were on a winning run Fryer

But is this a chance to try and instill confidence ?

I'd go Fryer

From Town home page I clicked I-Follow - See Packages - Check Availabilty - Click on "Subscribe now" and hey presto option to buy video pass for the game came up, no issues.  It took me to the payment page as normal for non-ST games

The game is a "cost extra" game mate, you have to buy it and view only from the UK via VPN if you, like you, are abroad.

Not part of the iFollow season ticket.

We’d struggle in L2 with this lot. Stevens, Grant J, Grounds all not up to it. Odimayo looks a player, though.

How on earth do you stop players making mistakes? You can’t coach that out of them.

Title: Re: Swindon Town v Darlington matchday thread
Post by: RedRag on Saturday, November 7, 2020, 15:41:17
Don't want to curse him but Odimayo looking head and shoulders above his far more experienced central defender teammates.  Faster, sure, but also composed going forward and judicious in his tackling.

I think J Grant seems okay. Not going to be a star in this division but think he feels like a useful squad player and you need a few of those.

Before this week I'd have said Grounds was an inspired free pickup. Few massive errors this week but gotta hope it's just a blip.

We certaintly didnt deserve to be losing but you can't keep on giving the opposition goals every fucking game.

We need to make our possession count and actually punish them where it counts, as they have done to us.

Grant, Smith and Payne running midfield, Stevens, Joel Grant and Pitman not very impressive.

As nemo says, up till last week he looked fairly solid but he has always had 1 mistake in him every game, much like Baudry has, they are often punished.

His confidence looks a bit fragile in this last week, his head visibly dropped after his awful mistake on Weds and again today.

A team of Kovar, Hunt, Caddis, Odimayo, Fryers, Grant, Lyden, M Smith, J Smith, Payne and Hope/T Smith is a good side that will be competitive in L1. The problem is that probably six of those are injury prone and the backups are not good at all.

Kovar is not league one standard.

He's not convincing no, but I think a better defence carries him along and if we're on the front foot, his excellent distribution becomes the standout feature of his game rather than his lack of command of the box. We have nobody better at the club, so we'll have to make do.

I think we should write off this season, and just pray for survival as a club. Mind you, a decent cup run would have gone some way to helping with the latter.

I could live with Pitman being a good finisher who contributed nothing in the build-up, or a hard worker who linked up play and occasionally missed chances. Right now he's the worst of both worlds.

Odiamyo now with a huge error that should have cost a goal. It's catching.

Centre mid is a huge problem, Grant doesn’t have the legs even against a lowly opposition to play alongside Smith.
Iandolo playing has been pointless as well, he’s not a left back, he’s not a left winger...

But this season all he has signed is dross ...

Not sure that's quite fair. We signed a lot of players in the summer as we lost a lot, and if the budget is lower you're always going to get a lower standard of player.

The good: Odimayo, Payne, Matt Smith, Johnny Smith

The meh: J Grant, J Grounds, T Smith

The bad: Pitman, Kovar

I don't think it's *that* bad a squad, just need some consistency and a bit of organisation. The year we went down with Iffy the squad (post Fallon sale) was dreadful, this year there's some talent in there. Just a lot of it is injured, and the rest is playing badly. A good manager could do a lot more with this lot I think. Maybe I need to keep telling myself that to keep watching!

I guess I'll get an opportunity to see some of it on the box - Given non-league Darlington have delivered an upset away from home.

Sorry Noel, losing at home to non-league opposition is NOT acceptable. And from what I could hear, we were devoid of ideas. Commentators seemed to suggest that we desperately missed Jonny Smith. Bit worrying if a L1 side has only one player in the squad that could possibly cause a non-league side problems.

Two more mistakes from Grounds - Hmmmm. Looking forward to seeing what caused the mistakes.

But are they are do they just stand out as being better than the plodders around them? J Smith aside others seem to flatter to deceive, M Smith will be a good player but he doesn’t seem have any discipline to his play and Grant is really struggling doing the leg work alongside him. Payne is consistently inconsistent, the recruitment seems to have been scattergun at best.
Kovar, Grounds, Pitman, Stevens etc just aren’t up to it and don’t even seem to match our style of play. Grounds clearly isn’t a ball playing centre back as is clear from the goals he’s cost us trying to do exactly that. I like Odimayo as raw with potential but even he shouldn’t be 1st choice at a league 1 club yet.

What a pile of shit, any team could rock up, not even name a single forward in their 11 and be guaranteed to score a couple against us.

First time I've actually been angry this season, I've tried to not get too affected by it so far but after that I can't ignore it, to have made the mistakes is forgivable in some way but the manner of the defeat in general is not, shambolic.

We have relied on fast skilful passing forwards up to now to get good results, but there's a crisis because T Smith, DJ, and J Smith were all out today, made worse when Payne our only other clever forward was hooked.  I was not surprised how badly we played, with a suspect defence as well.

Swindon FA Cup:

2020/21 Out first round to Darlington (non-league)
2019/20 Out first round to Cheltenham (League Two)
2018/19 Out second round to Woking (non-league) having beaten York City (non-league)
2017/18 Out second roung to Stevenage (League Two) having beaten Dartford (non-league)
2016/17 Out first round to Eastleigh (non-league, after replay)
2015/16 Out first round to Rochdale (League One)
2014/15 Out first round to Cheltenham (League Two)
2013/14 Out first round to Macclesfield (non-league)
2012/13 Out first round to Macclesfield (non-league)
2011/12 Out fourth round to Leicester having beaten three league clubs
2010/11 Out second round to Crawley (non-league) having beaten Plymouth (League One)

So last eleven years we've won six games in total, and our record against non league clubs is W2 L5. That PDC season is doing a lot of heavy lifting in the positive column too.

So last ten years we've won six games in total, and our record against non league clubs is W2 L5. That PDC season is doing a lot of heavy lifting in the positive column too.

That's dismal reading

we clearly don't have a good enough squad.

if and buts on injuries. there is always a long injury list and no real sign that's going to change.

Hunt cutting a sombre figure:
- Sloppy silly goals
- Same mistakes
- Got to change
- Disappointing overall
- Should have scored twice before they did
- Gifted a goal with short back pass. Talked about it all week!
- There will be consequences
- Its unacceptable and cant happen.
- Very disappointed with how the game went
- Spoke to the team about going 2 upfront and getting ball wide
- Players panicked
- Very, very disappointing
- Spoke before the game about playing behind and not infront of them
- Bemoaned injuries
- Jordan Stephens hasn't trained in 3 weeks. He was exhausted
- Donahue went down in the warm up
- Grounds: Can't keep making mistakes.
- Need to see how we go tomorrow and Monday in training
- Worried about the team rather than his chances of manager full time.
- Want the team to learn from mistakes and get better
- Hoping to get one or two back into training this week
- Donahue felt groin in warm up. Had problem with it before. Hurt us as he was good last week
- Iandolo hasnt played there for a while. Only been back training a couple of days
- Hope carrying a knock
- Odimayo has a knock
- Baudry not fit enough to play
- Horrible FA Cup side: Hope everyone is hurting, because he is. We let the club down
- Last 25 minutes we weren't doing things right
- Never been one to lie down. Will go back and reflect. Look at who we have available and get a game plan for Tuesday
- Are we good enough? We have a full treatment room.
- We will most likely be playing a youth striker on Tuesday
- Got to see what numbers we have available and go from there.

Thanks for the bit of craic on the other thread and good luck for the rest of the season. As a fan-owned club we are all inredibly proud of every one of our lads who showed great character, organisation and composure to see off full-time opposition on your own ground. I'm sure you'd agree that we thoroughly deserved that one and we were a credit to non-league football. There are some gems operating at our level, including our centre forward Charman who was a real thorn in your side throughout. Thanks again and good luck. I'm sure better times will be around the corner for you and here's to meeting again one day in the Football League.

My thinking was that if we could get through this sticky patch in the league then the injured players coming back would improve the team no end but I thought that at least we should have enough about us to progress to the next round, totally mistaken obviously, a real shambles of a performance.

Does Noel Hunt have enough about him to lift us for the FGR micky mouse match on Tuesday? I really hope he can if really interested in the job, we will see.  :hmmm:

Same for me mate. Totally.

Let me join the club.
That was unforgivable today from every aspect.
Darlo sat back and we had no idea. You shouldn’t single out players but we have signed some poor ones.
It’s unreal isn’t it. You can make one mistake and gift a goal but at the moment it’s almost one a game and as a professional club that is simply not acceptable.
We fuck about with it with poor players. Luke Williams all over again.
Just thankfully I’ve not had to travel watching this.

The thing I always liked about Wellens is whatever the result he was able to articulate the game tactically and describe patterns of play in his post-match interviews. Hunt has just talked in the cliches that make me think he does not really know what he is doing.

Absolutely, I wanted Hunt to be inspired today and stake a claim for the job, that didn't happen and taking off Payne was a huge mistake.

We need new ideas at the top ASAP, funds permitting.

But they didn’t have to do a lot for that win which was disappointing.
We got pushed back further and just went left to right in our own half.
Their forwards embarrassed that fat lump of ours. Fucking hell is is shit and a waste of a wage.
Maybe harsh but never saw how he would fit into our style.
It’s not that we go route one or get crosses into the box so can anyone tell me how he can make runs like Doyle / Yates?
He has as much pace as my Dad and we buried him 10 years ago.

There are no funds though are there.

Where are Lyden and Fryers, their injuries were only supposed to be a couple of weeks. Should we be concerned about people not appearing because of appearance fees etc, or should i not even suggest such a thing?

We have signed a few duds for sure, but that always happens. GK situation is a concern. Fryer out of contract Jan, hopefully we can get a better player in, though cost of not playing Kovar will still exist.

If we can get Caddis/Hunt, Conroy, Fryers, Donohue on the pitch then the defence is okay. Its a big if though.

Midfield has always been my concern, no idea why Palmer was allowed out, assume it was cost cutting, though that contradicts Powers account of Wellens turning down a forward on the last day. Get Lyden back and have the option of three in there and that's fine. Though there is no back up.

Struggling up top. Pitman has shown nothing. T Smith looks decent but we have to play a certain way. Need a hold up man desperately. T Smith supported by J Smith and DJ with the 3 man midfield and i think we are okay.

Payne is decent, but today his first touch was poor, and we cant play a 10 with out a better forward to hold up the ball. J Grant is okay as back up, average at best. I don't think J Stevens has got anything unfortunately, pace that he doesn't seem to know how to use.

Lyden appearances for us - 25
Fryers appearances for us - 30

Seems possible those numbers could form part of a contractual obligation to pay more seeing as both of them joined us with a dubious injury record.

Won't do much for his chances. His post match interview was lacklustre.

He sounded really downbeat and not his usual bubbly self. Not sure about the pre match interview but Hodgets was saying that Wellens may be back for Tommy Wright but it wouldn't surprise me if they both go if we get a new manager in

Fresh start. Fresh ideas. Fresh coaches - hopefully someone with at least a modicum of defensive nous.

Whether we can afford it is another matter.

That performance has summed up perfectly the precarious position we are in as a club. If we stay up this season it will be a bigger achievement than getting promoted last season. Here’s hoping there are at least 4 other clubs in a worse position.

We have just been beaten yet again in the FA Cup by a Butcher, a Baker and a Candlestick maker.
You would have struggled to note who was the Professional team during that second half.

This is true, however, you pay peanuts, you get primates. As the saying goes.

I have said before, as have others, LP is not here for altruistic reasons. Try £$€ or another denomination of currency.

To see a return he needs £’s fucking barra loads for the training ground and to rescue anything from SN1. And mega £’s to develop SN1 with or without the trust. As it stands and again as others have suggested in the past LP in footballing terms does not have a pot to piss in. At one time he may have had a broken tea cup but not now. Just at a time when our club is in the ascendancy with potentially a highly thought of manager, along comes Covid and to push on to maximise the momentum he needs, ta da £’s.

Smoke and mirrors, a bit of cockney swagger and bants with anyone who cares to listen (media) are all well and good for publicity and getting people on your side but the constant mantra of balancing the books (which is understandable) and current ownership squabbles pretty much laid bare that the tea cup had a massive hole in it. Sadly for LP he is likely as not facing a perfect storm.

Where he goes from here only he knows, the walls seemingly are closing in from a number of directions and he will need to pull off a stunt that Harry Houdini would have been proud of. In that case I fucking pray that it does not relegate our club to the level of looking up to Supermarine as a Derby fixture.

Apologies for the amendments, every time I read it I spot an error.

Will keep saying it. Until we have new direction with club ownership nothing will change.
Year on year drastic rebuilds are high risk and without doubt this season we have got it wrong.
Matt and Jonny Smith look decent. We have made some poor signings.
How many injuries can a small squad endure.
The Court case could go a number of ways including a potential new owner that may have more funds than Power. Right now I would take a twist and gamble to see another change.
With Covid and what we are seeing right now it’s hitting me hard. Can only imagine what it would be like actually being at the games and  would still be going to every home and away game as I always do.
Small crumb of comfort I guess travelling 6 feet to turn off the TV instead of racking up thousands of miles every season.
Keep the Faith (sigh)

Technically, I understand that there is more than one claim but they may have been consolidated.  If the trial goes ahead this month, the parties may not get judgment for some time.

I drag my kids along to a number of home and away games per season but I fear that, as we are out of the habit of going to games, they will have lost interest in watching live football. Doesn't bode well for the future of lower league football.

Looking on Twitter, it seems like something was said about Darlington pre-match about them not being the “toughest team” to beat. Hope it wasn’t from one of our players, otherwise it’s no wonder we’ve lost...

I think you raise a good point.

our little group all have kids now. none of them are interested in ifollow..

There is a chance they won't get back into it.

however I'm hoping the novelty of bring able to do it again will draw them back in.

In terms of the football and the basis that Swindon actually survive all this... I think what division we're in for the 2021-22 season will dictate how severe a year without football will hit attendances.

It's bad enough that we were denied L2 title celebrations but the notion of being back in that division by the time we can return to the CG en masse? Ugh and Sigh.

As soon as we are back on the terraces my lad and I will be on the road to SN1 and wherever we get time to travel to away games. In fact there is talk or getting back into the season ticket habit for 21-22, assuming we have a club to support.

Just watched the 'highlights'.

Won't someone please get that kid out of goal! If you don't take a strong position to begin with and you move like Lee Majors rather than the $6 million dollar man (ie In slow motion and slower that a Pitman amble) then you will never save anything! You won't be able to recover situations when defenders make mistakes in front of you and you won't be able to stop your team from losing.

He's not the only one that isn't good enough, but its he's just not ready.

To sum it up, we have gone up a division and have a worse set up than when we began the previous season. We go out in the early stages of the FA Cup to a non league side, at home. The manager has left us for an Oxford size club, fans are moaning and everyone is fed up.
I think they should remake groundhog day and base it on a lower league football club from the south of England.
Can't wait to get back to it  :-[

It feels like another one of those implosion moments in our history where it's all going quite nicely with a promotion and momentum and something blows us out the water.

I am just not sure if it's one of those short term mini implosions with poor results and manager leaving or an existential threat to the club.

Maybe it's a bit like 2006/7 with the club up for sale and Sturrock leaving after a promotion. It's just we don't know if new owners will come along in the current circumstances.

A win against the lesser STFC would be a nice soother from the horrors of yesterday.

Makes me nervous every time the ball is near him and I’m on the sofa.
Only knows what the players in front could be thinking. Just doesn’t command his box effectively.
Mind you most of the mistakes are coming from the pair of central defenders we are putting on every week. It’s every game and until we stop this we are in serious trouble.

The biggest crime is that Town failed to replace McCormick as a 'been there, done that' back up.

Fyer has experience but hasn't played a proper game since August 2018 due to the leg break and himself shouldn't be rushed either.

I appreciate that people will point to contractual stipulations of the deal but if a player is deemed to be constantly underperforming then of course they can be dropped. We've had far better loan players over the years start from the bench.

Kovar was a Wellens pick (albeit approved by Mildenhall). He would have seen him play countless times with his son. He’s a rotten Griemink/Glass quality player. He simply doesn’t move or react like a goalkeeper. We must send him back, take the hit, and get a 6/10 every week keeper available on a free. Unless we do that, we effectively undermine the confidence the rest of the team has every time the opposition are within 20 yards of the goal.

The fact that it would cost the club a decent chunk of money to NOT play an underperforming, not up to it, costly keeper is an absolute travesty & just shows what a fucking shambles the lower leagues have become where it’s dictated to us who plays.

I’d bin Kovar off and send any bill from Manchester United on to Mr Richard Wellens.

What miffed me most of all about yesterday was the total predictability before the match and utter inevitability during it.

I know we weren’t the only failures but the regularity of our cup crapness makes you wonder if anyone ever learns from the fuck-ups of previous seasons.

Yesterday was the first and probably only time a defeat will get to me during this vomit stain of a season. It’s all about survival now.

Not a fun listen obviously but think they did a good job of pulling out the themes.

With you all the way. I bought the game and had a rant at the T.V. at times about our inabilities but also found myself being
disinterested quite often. This is also very true of the Premiership/European/International games that I can watch where I can take or leave, and in the main leave a majority of the time. This is possibly all down to the situation we are all in where the "new normal" is not normal at all and things are dire in so many areas that football really is of little consequence in the great scheme of things. Roll on a vaccine that works.

Just finished listening to it myself and I'd echo what Nemo said, very good listen. One thing I think is becoming increasingly clear to me is that without fans this season doesn't really count in any meaningful sense. We just need to get through it intact and hopefully still in L1, how good the football is is almost irrelevant, no-one is there to enjoy it anyway. A season of Flitcroft hoofball and a 20th place finish will do just fine by me. (As long as we don't do that next season, obvs).

That's a real shame for the likes of Payne, Matt and Johnny Smith and Odibayo who look like good players from what I've seen and their contribution deserves to be enjoyed, but it can't be properly as things stand.

Considering you are a man who appears to profess against any kind of compulsory enforcement, strange you kept banging on previously about the verboseness of my posts; as if it were compulsory to stick to a particular word limit?!  :hmmm:

I may well have commented on your tendency to leave posts that are both verbose and prolix. Without reading back, I have a sneaking suspicion that I am not alone.

Best wishes

Aww safety in numbers and all that jazz? I understand it, really I do. Free thought and construction of your own is a wonderful thing though; you should try it.

Kind regards,
Bambi

And three days later, Nicky Hunt is hospitalised after an hour’s treatment on the pitch. Thoughts with him.

...but...if Darlington hadn’t of beat us we’d be playing a 2nd round FA Cup game today rather than basking in the glory of coming from 1-0 down with a centre back up front to beat the scum 2-1...

Cloud and silver linings and all that.

Indeed, I don't mind not being in the 2nd(3rd) round of the FA cup for the experience of yesterday.
