Title: Plymouth Argyle v Swindon Town matchday thread
Post by: Wobbly Bob on Tuesday, November 3, 2020, 11:57:49
Oh well, still a game on tonight. 7pm kick off.
Events on the pitch are likely to be overshadowed by the speculation off it.

An opportunity to follow up the very good win on Saturday with at least a point tonight, also for Hunt to show that he can step up if required.

Not a bad in attendance record at Plymouth over the years with a big red haired striker doing most of the damage in the early 90’s.
Hopefully that run keeps going when peering at a screen.

I doubt that this popular local beat combo will appear on the pre match playlist, but the answer to the question posed in the song is no, not nearly enough. It’s what supporting STFC does to people.

Remember when Di Canio left and the same day we went and smashed Tranmere with that Gary Roberts wonder goal. A repeat would be lovely.

Tough game and would take a point.
Once again everything up in the air with Swindon once again.
Will be interesting listening to the reports and reasons behind all of this.

do you think there'll be any of that Banbury?

I'd imagine they'll shut down official channels and we'll only hear through the grape vine - some of it may even be true

Hopefully the weather will hold out, i am having a few days in Looe about 20 miles from Plymouth and we have had some awful wind and torrential rain for about 18 hours. Its sunny now mixed with rain so hopefully the pitch has good drainage.

Cant see past a defeat today unless the players have a point to prove.

Will be watching but not commenting on any of it.

A disappointing day for Town fans all round i think.

As mentioned elsewhere, and I know his word is being questioned at the moment, we'll probably be able to connect the dots based on what Wellens says in his post-match.

It currently feels like Swindon Town FC have discovered that the partner they love has been cheating on them.

I am appalled by the negative sentiments being expressed about today's match.  Can't see anything other than a comfortable win.

Yep, cynical pull back.  He must have been having a whine about the Penalty decision, or lack of.  Stupid idiot.  Hunt pretty much accepted the Ref's explanation.

Well, that wasn't short on talking points. Chaotic first half, competent second.

The good: Matt Smith's passing to the wings is something else. Him and Johnny Smith down the right were going to win us that game double handedly until the sending off. We looked alright down the flanks generally. Kovar made some really good saves after a horrendous first 20.

The bad: First and third goals would embarrass a pub side. Kovar's command of his box and presence are minimal, and Grounds had one of those nightmare moments. Pitman looks as mobile as the statue of Kerry Mucklowe and about the same body shape. Oxford won. Wellens off.

I think we would have won if Smith stayed on. Kovar had a shocker for the first goal but made some good saves after that. The dreadful errors at the back cost us. The first 3 were gifts for Plymouth who finished well. Plymouth are a bit like us - okay going forwards, suspect at the back. We defended well in the second half. I was surprised that Payne came off, thought he was doing well. Smith probably best player before red card. Need a win on Saturday to boost the finances. Will we get compensation for Wellens going?

Title: Re: Plymouth Argyle v Swindon Town matchday thread

Noel Hunt:
- First 10 minutes = moments of madness
- Caught on ball twice.
- Individual errors
- Came back well
- 11 v 11 we shaded it.
- Structured in our shape after first 10 mins
- Grounds has been great since he came in, but that 10 mins was bad.
- J Smith being sent off didnt help
- Had chances to nick a goal
- Free kick killed it
- Leggy at the end as they covered a lot of ground
- Smith knowns he was wrong. Dont know what he said
- Jack Payne taken off to protect him.
- Also wanted Stevens for pace and to replicate J Smith from first 1/2
- Tired near the end so gave away a few shots around the box
- In terms of effort cant fault any of them
- Managerial: Salford made contact and was rejected. Got in touch with a representative and given permission to talk
- Recovery day tomorrow and will prepare for saturday.
- Hunt will keep on until hes told otherwise
- Wellens as a man and friend has been good to Hunt
- Will have to see what happens
- Hunt would be interested in taking over. Need a serious think about it.
- Think we are going the right way. Created better chances in the first half
- What is the challenge until January? We have plenty of talent and good players. We will attack every game with the objective of winning
- We were good defensively against Hull. Take away mistakes tonight and we defended well until we tired at the end.
- Its about how we bounce back
- Couple of players hopefully coming back soon
- Full strength side at the weekend
- Baudry and Pitman back tonight. Will assess them for the weekend.

No. When asked if he wanted to take over from Wellens he immediately said 'Yes'. He then rolled back to say he would continue to prepare the team until told otherwise. He then went on to say that he would need to talk to the Chairman (and others) before making a decision. But there were a lot of positives.

So, from context, he would like the job.

Looking a really poor signing, whether fit or not just doesn’t compliment our style of football.

I was surprised that Payne came off, thought he was doing well. Smith probably best player before red card. Need a win on Saturday to boost the finances. Will we get compensation for Wellens going?

Payne was on a yellow, that’s why he got hooked

Maybe could do with someone to partner him. Hopefully Hunt being a former striker will have some sort of idea of how to get the best out of him moving forward.
I think that's right. Reminds me of Andy Mutch - Waddles around. Not so good without a partner (in this case Steve Bull). Would like to see him with T Smith. But, ideally, I think he suits partnering a big battering ram - We don't have one of those.

Yes, he is gutted for letting the team & fans down.

He said to the Ref that he doesn't go down easily and the player caught him on the thigh, Ref said it was a shoulder charge and Jonny said Oh Feck off as a throwaway comment... and that was that... not taken in the vein of feck off to him...

there would be a lot of Sunday League teams down to 6 aside with that ref.

what's done is done. I'm taking the positives in a crappy day, he's looked really sharp in the last two games imo.

Hasn't done either to date so he's got enough credit in the bank to get a pass on this esp given the ref. Still one of our most exciting players, will be missed for the ban

Well, he obviously did. Much as the same as any player who gets sent off leaving his team mates under the kosh.

Dissecting the two yellow cards:

- The first was a pointless man handling. Couldn't seen any advantage of fouling him there as we had plenty of cover. It didn't help the team at all. It was so blatant, the ref (who was very card happy) had no choice.
- The second is just stupidity. Don't wind up a little man with the power to hurt you. What was the reported comment likely to achieve? It was petulant and ill judged.

The worst thing about it is that he was the best player on the park at the time. He was causing Plymouth no end of trouble and creating space for others as they were trying desperately to stop him influencing the game.

Fact of the matter is that at 11 vs 11 we could have got something out of the game. At 11 vs 10 and a goal down, we were unlikely to succeed, and didn't have anyone who could influence the game in our favour. The fourth only came because everyone was dead on their feet.

After Hopes goal last night, I make that 10 different goalscorers already after just 9 league games. Crazy stat!

Spot on and agree.
Second half was keeping it tight and feeding off any scraps. If Fatty Arbuckle could have taken that ball down, you never know but it was an uphill battle with the odds stacked against us.
Decent 4th goal and the only non mistake all night.
Get a few core players back and it’s not all gloom and doom. Cut this shit defending out and we are more than capable of moving up the league.

Yes, first EVER time in his WHOLE football career that he has ever been sent off.... says enough ...

It happens Mate. Starting to look a cracking player thus unfortunate. These lower league Refs are like robots, you simply can’t communicate with them and he will learn from that.
Saving grace 2 yellows and not a straight red.
Onwards and Upwards.

Only misses the cup game, and would have been rotated anyway I'd imagine.

Yes, I was talking about prior to that (tbf, I perhaps should have said "hadn't" rather than "hasn't" to make it clearer). He's been a good player for us to date, last night was an anomaly.

He is settling in well now and match fitness (as he never played for 5 months) is just about getting there now. I can say he is an honest player, and he wont repeat last nights mental frig up, as obviously he has to answer to me  Totally out of character to players that know him, and I think his comment was the straw that broke the camels back as other players were giving the pompous ref stick. (As another poster said above - little man sysndrome with a whistle is even worse)

I reffed in Liverpool (Sunday League) for 20 years and coached a U7 team right through losing 9 players to league clubs, and if I had sent off a player every time he told me to FO it would have been thousands of reds !!! Sometimes its a "next time and your off" warning that in 99% of cases works.

I did say to him when he was on the coach coming home that I 100% thought he would have scored in the second half and he agreed completely, which is no comfort for the workload which the lads put in 2nd half, and as others have said with a full team I totally believe we would have won.

On a final note he is eager to repay the faith shown in him....  coiled spring jumps to mind....

Any insights into the managerial kerfuffle?

What was Pitman's injury?  He looks like he can barely walk, let alone run.

Calf

In a bread roll, would explain his lack of mobility?

Back from a few days away in Looe, watched the game last night though.

Kovar is not good enough for the 1st team, he is a liability, yes he made a decent save but too many times he is caught way out of position. I think after 10 1st team games thats long enough to say hes not ready "yet" for the first team, sorry to all those who love him. Hes not good enough, he on his own have cost us several goals already.

I can't be fucked to check them out but I think at least 6 goals conceded can be attributed to his errors or positioning issues, not to mention the dozen times he COULD have conceded but got away with it, like his rush of blood coming out for a ball last night 35 yards out of goal and then missing the ball.

He had no chance with the 4th though.

Jonny Smith should have kept his mouth shut, we all know it looked like a foul so get your head down and get on with the game, he was terrorising a poor Plymouth defence all the time he was on the pitch and with him playing the whole game I feel we may have won. He will learn from his speaking like that to the ref, just don't do it again you were a game winner for us.

Grounds had a 1st half he would like to forget, he has always got a couple of mistakes in him but yesterday they were all punished.

1st half we defended really poorly but still managed to pass the ball well and create things, 2nd half we were the better side IMO but created few decent chances with only 10 players on the pitch with Matt Smith running things in the middle.

Plymouth looked pretty poor but they still punished our mistakes.

A special mention the the ref who had a fucking stinker of a game....well for us, gave everything to Plymouth and nothing to us.

Thanks NMH. Looks like Hunt isn't going with Wellens then.
Warren Joyce set to be named as Wellens assistant.

Our luck will turn.
Sunderland getting the rub of the green currently with every decision going their way and the fans are aware it it. Just not going for us right now and I guess more frustrating after that decent win Saturday.

We have some quality, we have some quality to come back.
I’m sure the pain of last night will be long gone come this weekend and a rare appearance in around Two will lift our spirits.
Were are all tough on our kids, one of life’s passed down coaching courses :)
