Title: Blackpool v Swindon pre match chat and matchday thread
Post by: Wobbly Bob on Friday, September 18, 2020, 13:48:29
Should be sat in a pub in Blackpool making a weekend of it as we speak. Not this season.
Shame as there is decent ale to be found there if you know where to look.

Only been there a couple of times for the football.
Was falling out of love with the club during the McMahon years but good to be there to clinch promotion in 96.
I do remember Sam Allardyce coming across as a very bitter individual even then.

No idea how the team will do tomorrow.
We will cause them problems plus the added interest of Yates & Keshi in action for the opposition.
Not sure how much home advantage there is in these bcd times, even with a sparse crowd the atmosphere will still be like a friendly or for a trophy game.

Hopefully this will get included in the pre match music, but I doubt it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YexO3-acfw0

And a quiz question to finish.
Which Swindon manager has the most appearances against us as a player?

Forgot to ponder. With money being too tight to mention I'm guessing that the team will be travelling to away games on the day unless there is a budget set aside for selected overnight stays?

Wellens played against us loads so I'll go for him.

Think we'll grab a point tomorrow.

Excellent pre match preview as always Bob. Wish I could be there but settling for a week down in Cornwall where I will stream the match online. Would take a draw although really hope we can get another 3 points.

Did they have to travel solo in their own cars?

Any tickets spare yet?

In all games against Blackpool we have only managed 7 wins from the 36 games with Blackpool winning 12 and 17 ending as a draw, we have scored 39 and conceded 51.

However, in away games at Bloomfield Road we have only managed 1 win in 18 games with Blackpool winning 9 and 8 finishing as a draw, we have scored 14 and conceded 28, a pretty poor record.

Saying that though, we have only lost once in our last 5 visits and only lost 2 of our last 8 visits, the other 6 matches ending as draws. Our only win so far coming in 1979 when Alan Mayes scored the only goal of the game.

Blackpool have (obviously) Yates and Anderson who moved to them in the Summer as ex Town players, Swindon have just Richie Wellens himself as the only ex Blackpool tie in, having played 226 times for them scoring 26 goals in his near 6 year spell there.

Manager Neil Critchley has yet to win a competitve match in charge of Blackpool with 3 draws and 2 defeats from his first 5 games in charge. 3 of those games ending 0-0 with Blackpool scoring only 1 goal and conceding just 3 in the 5 games so far under his head "coach"manship.

Critchleys preview.

Quote from: Blackpool fans
Will need to play better than we did last week. Swindon have some injury problems apparently, but Richie W appears to be both a great organiser and motivator of players, and he seems to find the players he needs somehow, despite missing out on players to the likes of us with their smaller budget. As a player he had quality and he had attitude, and he made things happen. He got in the faces of the opposition. I expect a difficult game.

if we score early I think we will easily win!!!

Same team as last week, if Swindon do play football should be plenty of space for our front 3...

I think it will be a tough game, they'll be well organised and on a high after promotion, whilst we're still finding our feet.

My only forecast which I sincerely hope is proved completely wrong is that we won`t score many if any goals, probably one at most although I imagine Yates will be keen to get on the scoresheet against his old oppo`s.

Sticking my neck out here. Blackpool win 3-1, Hamilton scorer on 27 mins. Yes swindon beat Rochdale 3-1 but having watched the highlights rochdale were very poor.

I think we need someone to neutralise Jack Payne in their midfield.

We are at home, we have a good midfield, maybe we should let them try to neutralise us rather than limit our own flow?

Blackpool 0-0 Swindon in front of a crowd of 1,066, including the disliked Rob Hartley.

I will go with....

                      Kovar
Caddis    Odimayo     Fryers    Hunt
              Grant    M Smith
   J Smith         DJ             Payne
                   T Smith

Fryer
Grounds
Haines
Iandolo
Curran
Pitman

And a quiz question to finish.
Which Swindon manager has the most appearances against us as a player?

There's not actually much competition for this is there. We've had a few top flight players who'd rarely have come across us in their careers - King, Hoddle, Ardiles, Macari, Gorman, McMahon, di Canio, Mackay, probably Flitcroft. Of the lower-league players, some will have turned out against us a few times: Onuora, Ling, Wilson, maybe Brown and Beamish? We can exclude Malpas, Trollope, L Williams. No idea who Bob Smith, Fred Ford, Bert Head played for.

Wellens might be a good call. Or Danny Williams - bet he was a  player for some lower-league northern team for years.

Yeah, Wellens with 15 appearances for 5 different clubs is top of the "I've played against them loads so why not manage them as well" league.

Followed by Phil Brown with 13 (4 clubs) and Danny Wilson with 11 (5 clubs).

Defeat. 2-1

I think this will be the kind of game that Yates will be up for but I don't think he is the kind of player that will enjoy our press and he'll be nullified and taken off relatively early.

with that in mind on paper we will win this. 2-1 atleast.

I had a quick look at their squad. Bez Lubala was good for Crawley last season and Gary Madine could be a handful. I noticed that Jamie Devitt doesn't have a squad number, I wonder if we're still interested in him or if that ship has sailed!

The number 22 for them CJ Hamilton is one of the fastest players I have seen and will be a handful for us as he was for Plymouth last week. Their keeper Maxwell was touted as a future star for Wales a few years back but never broke through, hes a solid keeper at L1 level.

Lubala only came off the bench last week for a minute or so and is unlikely to start but he has played against a few times and he is quick but gets the ball lost under his feet like Woolery a lot.

The only other player who great things were expected earlier in his career is Sullay Kaikai, who broke through at Palace and he was said to be the next Wilfred Zaha, showed great promise early in several loan spells, notably Shrewsbury and Brentford but he suffered a lot of injury problems and has fallen down the leagues but is still only 25. He makes a lot of things happen out wide.

Madine is a massive lump and always causes us problems but he never played last week too.

They are expecting the same starting line up today as they had in their defeat last week at Plymouth 1-0 where they outplayed Plymouth most of the game but didn't outscore them.

Possession
Plymouth 37%
Blackpool 63%

Shots
Plymouth 5
Blackpool 19

Shots on target
Plymouth 3
Blackpool 4

Corners
Plymouth 5
Blackpool 7

This was how they lined up last week.

               Maxwell
Turton  Ekpiteta  Nottingham   Mitchell
   Ward        Robson       Anderson
Hamilton       Yates             Kaikai

As always with stats they raise more questions

In what part if the pitch was the possession? , how far out were the shots?

More of the same result would be handy please.

They play a possession based style so it would be all over the pitch.

The shots were often good chances inside the box.

You can see the highlights here, several really good chances in or on the edge of the box. Most play coming through CJ Hamilton the number 22.

Blackpool fans preview of todays game with parts courtest of our own Constanza.

https://upthemightypool.co.uk/2020/09/18/insight-scout-report-on-swindon-h/

Quote
With the help of Rich Pullen from the Loathed Stranger podcast, we review Swindon Town’s new signings, pre-season form, style of play under Richie Wellens and consider what we can expect from The Robins on Saturday, in addition to picking out our tips for your Saturday flutter at the bookies.

1,000 fans will return through the turnstiles at Bloomfield Road this Saturday and it should be a good – if not a little unusual – atmosphere as we cheer on the boys against Swindon. It’s set up to be the perfect game for fans to return, with Richie Wellens, Keshi Anderson and Jerry Yates all facing their former sides.

Summer signings

Following Swindon’s promotion to League One as champions, Wellens lost eight of his first team players of last year. In addition to Anderson and Yates, the latter who was on loan from Rotherham, they also lost Kaiyne Woolery, Michael Doughty and Danny Rose, as well as loanees Eoin Doyle, Steven Benda and Rarmani Edmonds-Green.

Wellens did manage to secure two of his key men in Pool-linked Anthony Grant who signed a new deal, and also make the loan of Diallang Jaiyesimi permanent. They’ve managed to strengthen this window too, with Akin Odimayo, Brett Pitman, Jonathan Grounds and Joel Grant amongst seven permanent new faces with a further four loanees – three of whom are named Smith.

Like Pool, they’re still two or three players short of a full squad and are reeling from having lost a few key men so will be hopeful of getting stronger as they go along this season.

Form so far

The upheaval of their squad led to an indifferent preseason. An 8-0 win at Nuneaton and 2-1 victory over Championship side Coventry were followed by a 4-3 defeat at Ashton and consecutive 1-1 draws at Melksham and Bristol City. They were also booted out of the EFL Cup with a 3-1 defeat at home to Charlton and went down 3-2 to West Brom’s U21 side before last week’s league opener against Rochdale where they won 3-1.

Swindon therefore sit top of the league on goal difference, so everything’s surely going well? Not according to Rich Pullen.

He said: “There’s one problem with that – Rochdale were dog poo. Everyone’s got Rochdale to go down (in their pre-season previews), and they played a similar brand of football to Swindon’s relegation team of 2017. It’s nice, but it’s not effective. Blackpool will be a better gauge to see how this side are doing because we are a few bodies short.

“The result was misleading because Rochdale are no good. Swindon played well but I would’ve hated Plymouth away on the opening day of the season and I saw some Blackpool stats – it looks like you got robbed in a way and Plymouth are a well-drilled team.”

Style of play

As we shared on social media earlier this week, Blackpool had three of the top four defenders in terms of the numbers of passes completed at the weekend, with Swindon’s Zeki Fryers – who was linked with Pool during the summer – in second place. The two sides play a similar style of football, looking to play out from the back and play a high pressing game.

Like Pool, they tend to play 4-2-3-1, with Grant and Smith in front of the back four, the main danger coming from the wings and one focal point up front. Also similarly to the Seasiders, they’re expected to try to play on the front foot and dominate possession, while also leaving space in behind for the opposition to potentially exploit.

“We go a little bit gung-ho in the first 15 minutes and if teams can get through that, they’ll have a chance of beating us. It’s clear that Critchley plays a similar brand of football to Wellens, so what are you going to do? You’re going to look at the division below and see who’s doing well, and try and get their players. That’s football.”

The game will therefore be about which side plays better and takes their chances, given both sides have similar styles and tactics. It will be up to CJ Hamilton, Sullay Kaikai and both Yates and Anderson – who will both be licking their lips against their former clubs – to take their chances when they arrive. If not, Swindon will create chances of their own and try to spoil the party for us in front of 1,000 supporters.

Danger man

Right winger Diallang Jaiyesimi recently joined Swindon permanently, having spent last season on loan from Norwich, and the 22-year-old has been outlined as The Robins’ danger man. He scored five in 21 league games last season and gained interest from plenty of clubs over the summer before opting for the County Ground.

“He’s a naturally good footballer. It was a bit of a surprise Norwich released him and there were lots of clubs in for him, but Richie Wellens is the reason he chose us. On his day he’s a nuisance.”

What we can expect on Saturday

In front of our own fans, albeit at a low capacity, it is set to be a tasty affair with the return of pantomime villain manager Wellens, in addition to Keshi and Jerry lining up against their former clubs. Both sides are set up to score and also struggle to keep clean sheets, so there will surely be goals.

“I fully expect Wellens to be booked or sent to the stands… it’s all about who winds up who the most. I’d expect a lot of stuff on the pitch – Keshi is a mischievous guy, he will wind up Swindon’s players. There aren’t many left from last season but those who are surviving will know what him and Jerry are about.”

“I don’t think Swindon will win, I would take a 1-1 draw all day long. I don’t think last weekend’s results will have any bearing other than motivation for both sides. No Swindon fan is thinking anything other than for one, if not both, of Yates and Anderson to score. Anderson has scored some absolute belters from 25 yards so if he scores it will be a screamer. Unfortunately for him if he wants to shush anyone then he’ll have to find a camera because none of us will be there!”

Previous meetings

The sides have only played 36 times, with Blackpool having won 12, drawn 17 and only lost 7. While we’re not often on the losing side, our most recent meeting ended in a 3-2 defeat at the County Ground in February 2016. We won 1-0 earlier that season, while the eight previous meetings between 2002 and 2005 all ended in draws.

Betting odds

Blackpool – Evens (SkyBet)

Draw – 13/5 (Bet365)

Swindon – 5/2 (888 Sport)

Our tips

Jerry Yates is 5/1 to open the scoring while Keshi Anderson is 6/1

Both teams to score and a Blackpool win is 10/3

Weird that Curran makes the bench over Odimayo. And a bit of a surprise to see Palmer on the bench.

Odimayo injured according to Wellens, although you never do know if he's serious or not.

Fair play to the guy from Swindon who travelled up and booked a hotel room with a view of the pitch !!,  that's what you call thinking outside of the box,  hopefully he'll be rewarded with a 2-0 town win.

Correct, Odimayo said himself he’s struggling in TotT.

Ah yes I missed that. Curran comes in ahead of Odimayo on the becnh because he is classed as a home grown player for Swindon Town.

Barry,

you sign up to a free ifollow account, starting Swindon as your club.

there is an option to purchase it through following ifollow from Swindon ifollow page

you then purchase for£10 using free account and sometime in the not too distant future the option to "watch live" will appear (match centre)

Their back 4 against Liverpool (yes I know!) and against Plymouth last week looked very shakey at times, hopefully we can break them, their attack his a lot of pace about it, but defensively I think M Smith adds more than Doughty alongside Grant when it comes to breaking down moves.

Its going to be pretty end to end I think today, both teams fast on the counter.

I think we would all happily take a point but I don't see that they are any better than us over all.

We very rarely win up there.

I always get nervous for home games, away games, games I attend and the ones I watch on here!

Post by: Panda Paws on Saturday, September 19, 2020, 14:32:15
Fairly even. Good tempo. They've edged it as the game went on and were dominant for the last 10 but We've had the best chances. weak goal to concede right on HT. We're not used to playing against a press like this, and we've also chosen not to press, so far.

Lots of positives and we're certainly competing well against a side who most think will challenge for the play-offs. Got to take your chances though. Killer instinct - they've scored one half chance, we've missed two presentable opportunities.

Post by: Peter Venkman on Saturday, September 19, 2020, 14:32:16
HT 0-1

Not sure Blackpool deserve to be leading very even game so far, probably should be a draw but they have scored and we haven't.

Stats say its quite level. Town 56% possession and we have 5 shots to their 4.

Blackpool have got a bit more of a grip on the game since the goal though.

Blackpool still uncertain at the back when we do attack.

Yes, Pool CH getting most of the balls forward. We need to work it better through the team. Having trouble doing it so far under pressure.

M Smith, T Smith and Payne have been very good for us, Grant not far behind.

We are by no means out of it and still look capable of scoring with most attacks, I think the Jonny Smith injury disrupted us a bit and Joel grant has not been in the game too much so far.

We need to get back to doing what we do best, get the ball forwards with speed and run at them.

Thought that was pretty even but poor defending and maybe keeping on the goal.  When we have beaten their press we look good, but their left back is causing us problems down that side of the pitch and their wide front players look quite neat and tidy.  Think losing J Smith has opened it up a bit for Blackpool - the left back has come into it since he went off and J Grant hasn't touched the ball much, if at all, so we've lost the busy Payne in the middle as well.

matched them for 35, but then should be 2-0 down after a few very good chances wasted.

Anderson and Yates not yet impeding but Blackpool have some useful players.

think we've gone long for the in-behind too often myself, but at least we've created some chances

Exactly as I said few posts back, we need to get back doing what we do best, get the ball down and run down the wings not over the top of them.

We do it better than anyone in the league so there is no need to change it, especially when Pool have 2 huge centre backs, yes Tyler has pace but our passing over the top to him has not paid off much yet.

Get the ball to Payne or DJ and run at them, they have little pace in defence other than the LB, get it down and out play them as we know we can do.

Think we'll work the harder press in the 2nd Half Genuinely thought T.Smith had scored. Only 1.5 games in and you can see the quality and hard work from M.Smith. This guy will keep getting better the more minutes he has. As will Kovar, needs to work on that near post game though.

Harder press, flank work, plenty of crosses in, possibly lob Pitman on to nod down said crosses and see one of DJ, Smith or Payne popping them home from 5-10 yds.

Can turn it around for sure.

But 2-0 fro m the off obviously isn't the start we wanted. Time to show that tactical nous RW,

Lost that fair and square with a wretched middle third. They weren't great but edged us and took their chances, and we never really made them uncomfortable. Last 10 was very ragged and a better team would have hit 3 or 4. Even first 30 but we fell off a cliff after losing J Smith. Even though he wasn't doing much, he was occupying their FB Mitchell, who then grew and grew.

A Grant and Rob Hunt miles off where we know they should be. Kovar looks great with his feet but less so with his hands, so far, all though he did make one great save. J Grant, on that limited evidence, is a backup player - did very little.

M Smith, DJ and Payne great first 30 but all faded badly. Back four, Hunt aside, were OK enough. Fryers was actually v good. Probably my MOTM. Hallam Hope gave us a spark and was so unlucky not to score.

Need those reinforcements if we're going to compete more away from home. We're not flexible enough. We're desperate for a CM, as we all know. 433 away from home, with 3 genuine CMs needs to be an option. Keep the ball better, connect the back 6 and the front line more and give us a bit more control.

disappointing. lost the game between 45-65 mins.

the only really positives in terms of good player performances- caddis, grant, baudry, fryers and Hope. unfortunately that is all players who played last season! the others have work to do- jonny smith would be included in those if he had stayed on i'm sure.

BUT if that is one of the best this league has to offer- then we can have an alright-ish season i am sure.

Lost that fair and square with a wretched middle third. They're weren't great but edged us and took their chances, and we never really made them uncomfortable.

A fair assessment. I did think though that Fryers is far too keen to just hoof the ball from defence when we have nobody able to hold the ball..

Our first XI is decent enough to cause most teams some problems but we don't look dangerous enough up top and the transition between midfield and forward was almost always overhit.

Wouldn't mind seeing us play with two up top.

Overall I think we've looked like a team not quite at match fitness.  Couple of good chances and spells where we look good, but we've struggled with the pace of the game at times.  J Grant is a good example - he looks precisely like a player who hasn't met the team or played much recently.  He's spent most of his game watching the ball go about 3 yards away from where he is.  Bennett had that look a couple of years ago, so hopefully he'll be OK with time.

The two goals were bad defending but Hamilton was the best player on the pitch today - Hunt let him come in far too easily I think.  The first one you want the keeper doing better, the second I don't think Kovar even saw.

Overall, while it's been a long time since we've looked the worse team on the pitch in a league game, I still think we'll be a good team this year once we've had time with the coaches and built up some stamina in those legs.  There is enough there and the players will improve.  I like to call our seasons early, so I'll suggest we will be mid table when this one ends, which is fair enough in the current environment.

Hope was a bright spot when he came on.  He looked handy for the first time, which would be good to add to his instincts in the box.  We'll be OK.

Blackpool looked god at times, but I'd be unsure on them against a more physical team.  If they had a central striker they'd be quite a threat to most teams in this league - Yates is not that, although he busts a gut.  He'd be better for them on the left with Mitchell overlapping and Yates cutting inside.

We weren't good enough, nobody suggested we will win the league, far from it, most suggesting mid table or just outside the play offs.

Most still think that.

No knee jerk, lots of positives - lots of negatives.

Look how much Blackpool spent in the Summer, the scorer of both goals on his own cost more than Power has spent in 4 years.

Kovar is young and raw and shouldn't have been beaten twice at his near post (once was enough!) but I am sure they will work on that and it will make him a better keeper eventually.

Next.

We never recovered from J Smith having to go off, why J Grant went central at first I don't know, Payne had been doing well up to then in there up until then, that's when we stopped getting any possession in their third and they capitalised.  From there on nothing went our way, every loose ball ended up at their feet and the ball was bouncing off of us all over the place.

I'm going to put that down as one of those days for now.

Kovar very unlucky to have conceded 2 more goals at his near post (by which I mean it's unfortunate that's how the goals were scored not that he was unlucky not to have saved them, hope that makes sense), both were hit hard, the second a bit hidden by Fryers being between him and the shot.  Hope people don't jump on the near post cliché too much and dismiss him already.  Hope he doesn't play on his mind too much either.

The near post thing is a bit of a myth. The first goal is soft, not because it's his near post, but because it wasn't a great hit and was close to him. RW suggesting a knick too.

Second goal he has no chance.

Jonny gutted... Had Asthma attack on pitch, first one ever in a match and could not breath, tried another inhaler shot but made no difference.  Chest infection suspected and  just been to doctors and  has been given steroids to open up Airways. I am gutted also thought he would bag a couple today.

After first putting that we were out thought and out muscled. On reflection, I think that we were rather unlucky. J Smith going off made a difference, no doubt about it, but if the two clear changes had gone in we would all have been congratulating the team on a hard earn draw.

Ok, work on the fitness get the next two in and I believe that we will be ok. That was a game against one of the fancied teams. Frustrating yes, overly concerning no.

I didn’t watch today’s game, but as others have said it’s too early to panic.
We have had a number of players come in in the last couple of weeks, so we have people getting used to new teammates and style of play, possibly a bit short of fitness too. Also others eg Baudry coming back from injury, and needing to get up to full speed. Also more new arrivals coming next week.
We are likely to be a bit erratic until they settle in, but ought to be ok.
Today was a tough away game against a side who have spent heavily and are expected to be near the top at the end of the season.

Oh well, first away defeat since January.
Chances need to be taken when they present themselves against big six teams.

A full length diving finger tip save of one that's heading into the top corner might do the keeper some good.
I'm sure he'll look at any mistakes, work it out in training, learn from them and be better for it.

Blackpool are a decent side.
I liked their marauding left back in particular.
Hopefully we get our own this week when Donohue signs.
A bit of a quandary and will be harsh on whoever is left out, but I'd stick with Caddis at right back at least until the team settles into this league.

worth pointing out kovar did save a one on one and also snuffed one out as he raced out the area to beat the Blackpool striker who had got clear.

first goal was soft, second he was rooted, and they are the ones that stick in the mind, but it wasn't all bad

I think Kovar can take confidence from the two saves he made later on, one that was on the nearside and the other on the edge of the area - probably one of his strongest attributes is his starting position in those situations.

And yet every keeper gets beaten at their near post. He won't be happy about it and will probably feel he could have done better with the first but some times, keepers just get beaten at their near post.

It's a strange one.  He would not have been able to play football at a senior level like this without having been able to manage the asthma effectively up until now.  It'll always be there, lurking in the background.  Management is everything.  Hope he & the medical team are able to draw some positives and learn from what must have been a scary experience.  Good luck to the lad.

I can see the argument that he was beaten near lost for his first goal (though would agree it was more a question of fundamentals than near post being the issue), the second one though wasn’t the same. The guy was cutting inwards, and to my memory had about a clear a view of either post. Also wouldn’t have helped that fryers was slap bang in front of Kovar as the shot was struck

I heard an interview with David Seaman not so long ago, he said the mark of a good, professional keeper was how they bounce back from things like this. I think there is the propensity for a lot of psychological fall out over having let a goal in by not adhering to GK fundamentals. It's up to SM to take good care of him and use his experience to adapt coaching as required. The way Kovář holds himself on the pitch screams confidence to me so I think that we will see no adverse effects

I still stick with my straight after game assessment of Kovar. I think hes a decent keeper and will work on any weaknesses that have been highlighted so far.

Kovar is young and raw and shouldn't have been beaten twice at his near post (once was enough!) but I am sure they will work on that and it will make him a better keeper eventually.

Benda looked shakey in his first 3 or 4 games for us, his game vs Plymouth in the Mickey Mouse cup he looked woeful and yet turned out to be a very good keeper, he also made mistakes vs Crewe.

I am confident Kovar will be the same.

He is 4 games into his professional career and being a keeper is a position that is highlighted much more when you make a perceived error as it often costs a goal, something every other player on the pitch can get away with several times a match.

Couldn't watch yesterday, but just caught up with the extended highlights.

The difference between this and last week was that we scored early against Rochdale. Had either of the chances to T Smith and J Smith hit the back of the net then it could have been different.

Kovar needs to look at his positioning - Noticed it last week a bit too. Working with a G/K coach will hopefully iron out the near post weakness (if indeed there is one).

We looked over run in the second half because we were chasing the game. Not overly worried about that.

Onwards and upwards!

I did watch the game live on ifollow and yours is an accurate summary. We were the better team in the first quarter of the game and had chances to go ahead. We didnt deserve to be behind at half time, but once they scored early in the second half, we didnt look like getting back in to it, as they played with a higher tempo and utilised their pace on the counter as well. Having said that if Hope scores with the shot that hit the bottom of the post and rolled along the goal line, it may well have changed the momentum of the game.

Overall Blackpool deserved their win, based on their second half showing, but we played well in spells and Matt Smith looks a tremendous prospect with a great range of passing. Jonathan Smith is also a big threat and the game changed when he went off.

Not too downhearted, as we have players getting used to the team, players coming back from injuries and 2 additional signings due in this week. Feel we will be OK in this league, top 10 with an outside shout of the play offs, which I think we would all accept in a higher league and having lost our entire strike force from last season.

He was THE big difference, but thats what you get when he cost more than our entire team put together. As stated above only him and Mitchell would get in our side though IMO, they had a few others that did ok but they were no better than any of our players.

My thoughts from Saturday;

I thought for 35 minutes it was a very even game and we looked the better side. I don't think it was any coincidence that once J.Smith went off, replaced by a lost looking J.Grant that Blackpool started to take the upper hand and the dangerous CJ Hamilton scored. The second half started disastrously and Hamilton's pace was too much for Hunt and another powerful finish past Kovar. I thought then Kovar was quite nervous, a pretty feeble punch making me feel very uncomfortable with him in between the sticks, a shame as he was faultless with the ball at his feet.

The rest of the second half we were a bit of a mess to be honest, despite Hallam Hope hitting the inside of the post, Blackpool should have been 3 or 4 up making a total hash of Swindon gifts at the back.

At times we played some excellent football from the back, although I think we were guilty of overplaying at times which we should have been punished for more than we were. I thought Matt Smith was our best player, always trying to make us tick, Fryers also had a good game bringing the ball out and using it well. Apart from that it was quite average really. That said, Had T.Smith scored his header after excellent work from DJ it could have been very different.

Burton at home on Saturday is an excellent chance to get back on track.

When attempting to assess our relative strength, early season, it is easy to comment on an uncompleted squad and the need for more time to gel or for certain individuals to build up fitness.  However, in fairness, that does also apply to most other clubs, so I don't believe those particular reasons are any particular cause for relative optimism.  Or pessimism.

Rochdale were very poor last week (and are expected to remain poor) but Stephen Humphries had yet to join them leaving them with no target man and Jimmy Ryan, their midfield destroyer, was also missing.  I believe they also lacked a recognised wing back but still opted for a back 4.  They will improve and obviously did, to a degree, yesterday against Pompey.

The way I read it was that after a very decent opening 30, Pool started getting into better positions in the vicinity of our box and were ramping up the pressure.  We (Wellens) didn't really find an answer to counter this, save for a brief period after their second goal.  Even then, Pool were very quick to counter, and gradually re-asserted control as we began to look ragged.  Quite a poor performance with Pool taking creditable advantage on the counter from misjudgements from Grant (untypical) and Smith (amidst some very astute passing).  Could have been 4 or 5 regardless of our own what ifs.

Although I'd join the popular "mid table" consensus as a bet-guess, I think it's way too early to assess.  At this stage, completing the signing of your targets and getting the squad working on the training field is still vital.  Meanwhile striving very hard nonetheless to get whatever points are on offer.  Early points can be a most unreliable predictor of the season's outcome but simple maths says  a few points more now can be pretty handy come season's end.

Good summary Mr Orange.

I know Wellens mentioned it, but we weren't on fire up front even though we did create some good chances. I'm not sure if that's worrying or encouraging that at least we still created despite being below par?!

Should also say in the first half particularly DJ looked a bit more like we know he can, so that's a plus. As is JS "only" going off with Asthma, so no injury.

I've said my bit on Kovar, but with injuries (and pies) disrupting the back 4 in pre-season they'll surely improve as a unit with a bit of playing time (+ Donohue). That'll help protect him. And besides, you don't get to where he's got by not knowing your angles.

Yeah, probably the last time anyone actually outplayed us was probably Crewe away last season, when again we started really well and then fell to peices when we conceded our first goal against them too.

Days like these will happen, you cant go out and dominate and win every game and we are still not the finished article when it comes to squad too as Batch says.

Burton at home on Saturday is an excellent chance to get back on track.

I watched Burton v Villa in the LC in the week, specifically to get a handle on a Div 3 opponent.  I would regard Burton as being a fairly typical Div 3 type atm.  Big, strong and quite direct, it was only in the last few minutes that a bit of Grealish got Villa ahead.

The worry was the presence of Michael Bostwick, the sort who has bullied us often in recent years... we've come across him 7 times in the last 5 years.... no wins.  Although he seemingly missed Sat's game so could be injured, he shows how Burton go about it.

Therefore although a chance... more importantly perhaps a good early indicator of where we're at this season

We haven't played against Bostwick while Grant has been playing for us, I have no doubt that Grant will not allow himself to be bullied by the thug Bostwick, which is as you say something he has done to us regularly in the past, especially for Peterborough and Lincoln.

If Grant was not playing then yes he will bully us as is his only style of play.

It always seems to be tight when those 2 go head to head results wise, quite a few draws and yellow cards.... a noted success for Grant may have been when Crewe managed to edge 9 men Posh 1-0 when Bostwick, got the red on half an hour.

I just sat through extended highlights of Burton v Accrington.

Burton play a typical lower league style, long balls down the wings and get the ball into the box as early as possible and attack the near post.

They have very little genuine pace in the team, Bostwick sits almost as a sweeper in the middle of the back 4 to deal with any loose balls in the box. Their centre backs look ponderous and a pair of lower league cloggers going by what I have seen so far. Accrington exposed them a few times but didn't have the quality in the box to put the ball away.

They defend in numbers and their first thought is get the ball forward to the big front pair of Akins and Hemmings to win the ball at every opportunity. They had a lot of the ball against a very poor Accrington team but not in dangerous areas and rarely looked like scoring despite them having 13 shots and 68% possession.

I also watched the Posh v Burton highlights and again the defence looks pretty awful when balls are put into the box and their keeper looks very suspect too.

In the game against Villa they only had 30% of the ball and allowed Villa 17 shots (2 of which went in) Villas reserves should have scored 6 or 7 with better finishing and Burton look exposed when up against players with pace.

Burton appear to be a typical L1 team, big players, mostly long ball side with a fair bit of experience in it. Nothing fancy but they know what to do, similar in style to Northampton last season.

Villa played mostly regulars, due to not having a game until tonight, just one kid on debut.  Until a few mins left it looked as if Burton would get the pens they set out for..... don't suppose they'll set up too different on Sat.  Therefore a difficult game, how we cope a good little indicator....

The Villa side that played vs Burton only had 2 players in it that played the previous game vs Man Utd, Grealish and Mings.

We have played the poor in the division v Rochdale and won, we have played the decent in the division v Blackpool and lost now we play the average in the division so a draw would seem to be on the cards!

I think we'll see a lot of difficult games this season - that's the joy of being a division higher.  I'm pretty certain we will see some of our players improve - Baudry looked rusty and lost his legs in the last 30 mins (as you'd expect), J Grant looked utterly lost and off the pace (as you'd expect from someone who has essentially not had pre-season with us, or anyone I guess), Caddis still looks a yard short and even A Grant looks a little short in match fitness terms.  Those players will all get better.  The question we don't know the answer to, and it's even more erratic than normal, is how we compare in those stakes against the other teams?  There are likely two aims for this oddity of a season - 1) survive financially, 2) survive in the division - if we can do the first, I think we'll plod in mid table based on what I have seen and the hope of improvement.  My comparison is not the other teams we have played, but my memory of this Division and our previous teams.  Could be very wrong!

It's still far too early to tell. The table doesn't start taking shape until after around 10 games or so.

Full lockdown for the UK and abandoning the league, using PPG.  I'd take it, Oxford may be a little irritated though.

Villa's side was made up of the cup keeper..... Ollie Watkins a record signing on debut, a kid on debut, then Hause (25) Taylor (31) Elmahamedy (33)  Mings (27)  Makamba(26) Lansbury(29) El Ghazi (25) Grealish (25), all of whom played a fair amount of games last season in the Prem.
