Wouldn’t normally post something like this, but Portsmouth are the only footballl club I have any fandom for at the moment

Couldn't really care less,   but hope they get dumped out of the play-offs miserably and we do the double over them next season.

I think losing to an 80th minute penalty after being the better side and wasting numerous chances to win it counts as heartbreaking fashion

Lovely

Spot on. Wycombe in the Championship is a travesty. Hilariously so

Ditto!

Absolutely, they play a shocking style of football, very Lawrie Sanchez/John Beck style.

In L1 they can get away with it, in the Championship they will be mullered.

How Oxford lost that is fairly ridiculous, they were far and away the better side but wasted all of their chances (their only goal was a fluke) trying to walk the ball into the net. That said, Wycombe defended very well.

Wycombe's one tactic was to welly it long to a target man who was beaten to the ball repeatedly and rely on set pieces. Clearly it worked so Ainsworth has to be applauded, and let's be perfectly fair, to get Wycombe into the Championship is an incredible achievement regardless of how it was done.

Initial thoughts are that I expect both Oxford and us to be around mid-table next season, with an outside change of nebbing into the play-offs.

At least Oxford will have 2 cup finals to look forward to next season ;)

Wycombe obviously have a successful game plan which plays to their strengths.  You can't blame them for exploiting that. Time will tell whether they get found out at the next level.

I am sure that their 3000 odd supporters will be delighted to be able to mix it in the Championship, even if it is for one season.

Good luck to Wycombe. Decent, well run club.
Wouldn't bet against them hanging around in the Championship for a couple of seasons.

Ainsworth has a style which suits his players, wether or not he bought players in to play his way or he played that way to get the best from the players at his disposal I can't say for certain, but its workmanlike, ugly, dirty, niggly, long ball set piece heavy style thats very professional at the expense of entertainment.

But football results are not based on entertainment, they are about building a solid unit of players that know their job and play to a style that they get results from.

Wycombe have certainly done that.

I would hate for us to have that style of play, like Flitcroft+VAT and delivery. Even under Macari we were direct and speedy on the counter but we never just lumped the ball up to a massive target man to try and win at every opportunity, Bamber and White wouldn't have won much in the air if we did!

It does make me so glad we have Wellens who doesn't have to adapt the team to that dull style to get results and we as fans can enjoy watching matches involving Swindon, sometimes even if we have been beaten.

Wycombes style will win them no new fans but it will win them a few matches, wether it will be enough to stay up or not we will see but my gut feeling is that this is their high spot already.

A la Yeovil a couple of years back, enjoy the ride.

In some respects, I would take a couple of seasons of hoof ball and 'shithousery' if that yielded a change in fortunes.

For me its a no, a little hoof and a little shithousery I can accept but not a full 90 mins of it every game.

I assume most people would if I got us back into the 2nd tier, it’s ultimately a results business.

Entertainment is nice but I doubt Wycombe fans have any complaints about their style right now

Going by their forum they seem totally oblivious of it and just relishing in the promotion.

If Swindon got promoted to The Championship and within the first 12 hours somebody was on TEF saying 'well we'll probably go down next year unless with do this and that' then I'd be pushing for a short-term forum ban...!

Good to hear, I’m pleased for them

They had the FA Cup semi a few years back but their fans must be in dreamland. Can’t be much more than 20 years ago they got into the FL, with all levels of the game becoming more dependent on your finances it’s good to see a side like that making the 2nd tier.

Winning > Performance

I’d take 10 years of hoofball and shithousery if it meant we dominated football like Liverpool in the 80s, Manchester United in the 90s...

Going on the screams of FFFOOOOORRRWWWAAAAARRRDDD from large sections of the county ground, hoofball is attractive to many punters.

Oh absolutely, but they seem totally oblivious to their own style of play, the lack of entertainment is far less important than results, which I can understand, but to bury your heads in the sand as to how you have achieved it I just don't understand.

When Sky put the ranking up for total passes, passes completed, short passes, possession in games, 10+ pass sequence....over the season Oxford were 1st on every stat and Wycombe 23rd on every stat, only Bolton were below them.

Yet here we are! :D

I suppose the trite observation is that you don't get points for passes completed etc.

What sort of stat is Width per Passing Sequence??

Stats are unreliable because you can take the same data and manipulate it to your own gain.

NFI!

Sounds made up to manipulate figures as you rightly point out.

It's the distance between the left-most and right-most point in any given sequence of passes. It's used to measure how teams try to open up the opposition within a passing sequence and differentiates between a 5-pass sequence where you ping it around in little 5 yard triangles but don't really switch the point of attack vs a 5-pass sequence that switches from left to right and back again for example where you're possibly more likely to open a side up. But as a stat on it's own without context it doesn't really serve much purpose. I suppose the contrast would indicate that Wycombe are more direct than Oxford.

Wycombe have pretty much followed the Yeovil and Lincoln model of lump-it-up-to-some-big-chonk-who-will-soak-it-up-and-maybe-grab-a-goal style footy.

Let their fans enjoy it for now because like Yeovil and then Lincoln, they won't hang around their relative divisional high for long.

In five years time I envisage,

Bournemouth
Hudders
Wycombe
Lincoln

...to all be playing in L2. Hopefully Bolton will still be there and Mansfield will finally have folded, after years of Caroline Radford draped over a Maserati finally takes the toll.

I would rather not wake up to a scattergun assault on SEVEN topics by certain posters on here, including several sections of War and Peace.

As at 07:15 (BST for you disasporans) today, the number of posts by a certain poster is 5,069. Let's see how that number changes over the next few days.

Is it my problem? Or theirs?

So you post on a forum to complain about people posting on a forum?  Isn't that like holding a protest about people holding a protest?

I think that you might have answered your own question..  I get disagreeing with a point of view, people do that with Reg all the time..  but complaining about people posting and the length of their posts is, well, a little strange..  maybe forums aren't the best place for you to hang out..

Awww, you're so lovely. Maybe I can give you all of my social media handles and then you can track and stalk me properly? I'm sure you'll cum several times at the multitude of viewing available to you*. I'm incredibly liberal leaning, with Green Party ideals, very anti-racist, pro-choice and sometimes draw cute things to sell. I just know it'll be the perfect wet dream for you.

I only ask you do one thing; please please for the sake of convenience laminate all the images you print off.
