Title: Kerry Mucklowe statue - thoughts wanted
Post by: SussexBoy on Tuesday, March 24, 2020, 16:36:29
Hi all,

Firstly, apologies if this is in the wrong section of the forum.

I am in the process of writing an article for a football publication about the recent temporary installation of the Kerry Mucklowe statue from This Country at the County Ground for the Grimsby Town game. I wanted to gauge some opinions from Swindon fans over your reaction to the statue when you saw it. Was it received positively on the whole? With chuckles? Any confusion? Has the publicity of the show's main character being a huge Swindon fan been welcomed by the club?

Any thoughts you could provide me with would be enormously helpful. Thank you!

Best wishes,
Steven

My twitter feed on the day seemed to suggest it was very well received.  It seemed to hit the spot with a lot of people.  There were plenty of comments to the effect that, at last, the club was starting to engage well with the fans.  It was a humorous gesture, and was received that way also.

It was really funny. The only problem is I own two of the shirts that Kerry has and now my wife calls them "my Kerry shirts".

I didn't see it in person, obviously, but I thought it was cool.

It seemed to ruffle the feathers of a few Oxford fans, which is always a good thing.

Haven’t they got a statue of the pension fraudster Maxwell?

Me too. Although tbf I only wear them for running, but the missus did point out that "That's what you look like when you go running in that shirt" (the white one). Thanks love

And to answer the original question, I thought it was pretty funny as did my two teenage lads who are much harder to impress, being teenagers and all

I thought it was funny.

In general they've never really taken the piss out of Swindon either, so it's good publicity!

plus, growing up in the same hometown as them I like to think the likes of us Town fan shirters influenced their writing. :)

Nice for a couple of locals to do well for themselves.

I thought it was excellent TBH, got some national exposure for the club and the TV programme, everyones a winner.

Yeah it's great, although obviously there's a bit of fun poking, the show treats the club with a nice fondness.

Oi Rich. You tried to get Daisy and Charlie Cooper onto your podcast? :D

Didn’t read thread title properly, thought it was going to be about people’s opinions on giving her one or not

I would have liked one on in 'character' but didn't get very far on that front.

Statue was very funny as was the advert the BBC had on the TE. It's always better if your club can embrace a bit of self deprecating humour.

I remember reading Bristol City reject the chance to have their shirts in Hot Fuzz and Rovers agreed. Fair play to the latter. Perhaps it was because Cowlin was on the shirts?

I am pretty sure in an interview after winning the award she said that neither her nor her brother were actual football fans but the shirts came from somebody else in the cast who they had known for a while.

I may have missheard but I am pretty sure thats what was said, they said that neither had actually heard of Norris before writing the series but a friend said a few things about him and they found it very funny so used it.

Whossisface who plays Kurtan is a Fulham fan, he's on record multiple times about that. Maybe she said they weren't Town fans?

Charlie Cooper is definitely a Fulham fan. The early rumour was that they were Oxford fans poking fun, then (and I've read a few Oxford fans say this) the producer was die hard Oxford fan but his Twitter profile has him down as a Spurs fan.

It ultimately doesn't matter who they follow in real life, the most important thing is that they've linked Swindon Town to a nice bit of British comedy history.

I wasn't overly fussed about it but then I've never seen the show! Just a bit of a gimmick wasn't it but a lot of people found it funny.

The best part was the Oxford fans who seemed to think we'd legitimately built a statue of her and spent a few days wanking themselves silly about it on social media. I suppose they had no other stick to beat us with given the season we've had so far.

Must admit I didn't find it remotely interesting first time around,  only watched 2 or 3 and even then not all of the way through,  not sure how it happened but stumbled upon it again a few weeks ago,   watched one and that was it - watched the whole 3 series over the next few days and thoroughly enjoyed it.

They were on the Last Leg t'other week. it came up, didn't seem like Kerry was overly keen at it's launch! Said something like "who the hell made that" when someone next to her said "um, that was me"..

Many thanks to all of your replies. They are incredibly helpful in helping me gauge the popularity of the statue at Swindon. I shall probably end up quoting a couple of your posts in the finished article, and I'll PM whoever's I use just to make sure they're happy with me including their words.

Thank you again and good luck for the promotion push, whenever the season restarts! For what it's worth, I've recently adopted Colchester United as my second team since working in Essex and I saw Swindon play the U's in January. Obviously the night ended up being a very good one for Colchester, but you could see the quality and talent in the Swindon squad. In the first half the movement from your forwards was sublime. You'll deservedly go up as Champions when the season resumes!
