Great result last night. Looking forward to Saturday and hopefully putting the final twig type nail in Coopers environmentally friendly wicker coffin. He must be close to being recycled ?

Christ really? I get the act of defiance toward FGR but eating the burgers at the CG? That's active self-harm, don't do it to yourself, man.

A few seasons ago my dad bought a hot dog from that van and because we won the game felt obliged to get one prior to every home game until we lost. I think it was in about 2014 so we were quite good and was 'relieved' when we eventually lost as he was sick of hot dogs by then!

We’ve played well, we’ve absolutely outclassed some teams - but we’ve not really pissed all over someone, really stuffed them.

Saturday would be a good place to put that right.

6-0

Not sure football, quite works that way..... take STFC when Lou Macari was gaffer, one of our most successful periods, 235 league games played never scored more than 4.  They'd get the job done and then conserved energy.  The latter aspect is very important to us atm as we face a very busy March, with a squad although now having appropriate numbers, has always been prone to injuries.

I was talking to a fellow TEf'r yesterday about the same thing.

We aren't playing badly but we have not quite clicked into full gear yet, but we are still winning games at a canter.

If we all click on the same day somebody will get absolutely mullered 5 or 6 nil if not more.

FGR conceded 4 at home to a very average Carlilse side just over a month ago other than a 2-0 defeat by Scunthorpe they never lose by more than a single goal.

So I doubt it will be against these lot that we click into place but if the arrogant Cooper thinks he can come to the County Ground and try to out football this team then he will be in for a massive shock and we could easily beat them IMO.

We have beaten FGR every time we have faced them in the league here and I think that will continue again on Saturday.

The vegans have won just 2 of their last 15 games since November, with 6 of the last 8 games ending in defeats. DLLDDWLDWLLLDLLDL.

Based on previous experience against FGR, and their run, I think they'll open up to try and attack us and we'll have a rare game with less possession than the opposition, BUT, that will be their downfall and we'll play much more direct against them, winning 4-2.

True. Just feel to get anything from us away from home at the moment a team will have to be full of confidence and in form. FGR aren't that side.

Wellens won't allow us to take our foot off the gas. I'm sure of it.

Easily their best player and pretty solid at left back, takes a decent free kick too.

As bizarre as this may sounds as he’s a centre back I think we aren’t clicking as we are missing Baudry. All of our sustained periods of possession are orchestrated by him.  On Tuesday we had REG giving the ball away with bad passes and Broadbent constantly giving the ball away with long cross field passes to Isgrove that their defender won every time. I think it showed why Wellens drops Broadbent as soon he’s in a position to play either Fryers or Baudry at centre back, Broadbent just isn’t good enough with his feet. Even Scunthorpe cottoned on to this on Tuesday and gave him as much time as he liked on the ball.

We were at our fluent best when Fryers and Baudry lined up alongside each other.

100% is way wide of the mark... our CB pairings have been to say the least interesting. At a conservative estimate we've used 9 different players, a couple like Ballard and Curran, not really significant as only getting a matter of a few minutes.

We've used 12 different pairings,  of which Baudry Fryers have 8 matches, Conroy Baudry next with 7.   Baudry Fryers have some decent results, but so have a lot of the other combos. For instance probably our best result thus far was winning at Home Park.... a Grant Fryers combo.

What makes it so interesting is that conventional wisdom is that in a successful side having a solid stable CB combo is a prime requirement.... and we've not had that.

Because we are borrowing something from the Pep school of thought, whereby his best teams have had players like Mascherano filling one of the centre back slots.  Often you heard commentary during that period about how Barcelona would be vulnerable in defence as a result, but the possessioned the life out of teams.

Having two centre backs comfortable on the ball can clearly work - the trick is having that around the rest of the pitch as well.  I don;t imagine having some of centre back pairings would be working as well with Dunne and Linganzi in a two man midfield in front of them.

Also worth noting how often Doughty and Grant drop in when we have the ball at the back, with the full backs pushing upfield.  Our midfielders being better on the ball, so make room for them and get the full backs in a position to stretch the field and deliver crosses.

We certainly look less of a threat when we have players like Broadbent or Zakuani in the role.  Port Vale away (with other mitigating circumstances) being a great case in point.  Fortunately on Tuesday, we were still better than the other team in all other 10 positions on the day.

I find your figures to be a bit wide of the mark.

I make it out that we have had 10 different pairings at CB using 8 different players there.

9x Baudry & Conroy with w5 d2 l2 conceding 11 goals with 2 clean sheets.
8x Fryers & Baudry with w6 d1 l1 conceding 5 goals with 5 clean sheets.
4x Baudry & Zakuani with w1 d1 l2 conceding 6 goals with 1 clean sheet.
3x REG & Baudry with w2 d0 l1 conceding 4 goals with 1 clean sheet.
3x REG & Fryers with w2 d1 l0 conceding 2 goals with 1 clean sheet.
2x REG & Broadbent with w1 d0 l1 conceding 2 goals with 1 clean sheet.
2x Fryers & Conroy with w1 d0 ll conceding 2 goals with 1 clean sheet.
2x Fryers & Grant with w1 d1 l0 conceding 2 goals with 0 clean sheets.
1x Fryers & Zakuani with w0 d0 l1 conceding 2 goals with 0 clean sheets.
1x Broadbent & Caddis & Grant w1 d0 l0 conceding 1 goal with 0 clean sheets.

Appearances playing at CB.

24x Baudry w14 d4 l6 including 9 clean sheets
15x Fryers w9 d3 l3 including 7 clean sheets
12x REG w9 d1 l2 including 3 clean sheets
11x Conroy w6 d2 l3 including 2 clean sheets
5x Zakuani w1 d1 l3 including 1 clean sheet
3x Grant w2 d1 l0 including 0 clean sheets
3x Broadbent w2 d0 l1 including 1 clean sheet
1x Caddis w1 d0 l0 including 0 clean sheets

It shows that Fryers and Baudry have easily the best partnership for keeping clean sheets with 63% of games they have played in as a pairing ending with us not conceding.

Fair enough as I said a conservative estimate.... a rough guide, I didn't bother checking to carefully.  However I included Conroy Broadbent for ColU game as Baudry went off earlyish.

The point being that Fryers Baudry have only featured in 8 league games out of 35, as stated they've done well as a combo but other combos have had some good results too. The sample isn't really big enough to make a sweeping generalisation on, becasue of the changes in personnel forced to happen.

I think we can safely say Baudry has a more positive influence when playing, whether partnered with Conroy, Zeki, REG or Broadbent. He's like a "mentoring" CB. Some of those he's partnered with have needed more guidance than others (Conroy/Broadbent). REG has been quicker to adapt/learn and of course, the golden ratio seems to be Baudry and Zeki. But Baudry is key here. It shows how "good" we are as we've still got results without him yet he does bring more calm to the defensive unit all round.

So in other words for this division, with a fully fit squad up against all the other teams our strongest line up (lest we forget that there are 11 players on the field at any one time) should consistently give us a 9/10 performance wise. At the worst with suspensions & injuries maybe a 7.5/10 so the key word for all the yinging and yanging is consistency. And that is what every successful team delivers, high levels of consistency. Of course there are individual nuances to pick over but for me a consistently high performance makes for an enjoyable game. Now at the other end of the scale when things are disjointed, that is when you really notice how bad players and their pairings if you will, stand out like a pimple the hooter.

I love stats too, I actually didnt mind collating it, it does evidently show who "appear" to be the best centre back pairing.

I also think it proves Wellens correct in letting go of Zakuani who was only on a winning side once in his 5 appearances with that game being the only clean sheet game he appeared in as well, the 4-0 at Crawley.

As always the pre match views of FGR fans, not that there have been thatmany on their very quiet forum...

Quote
When we have such great news about the stadium I so wish we had more interviews and videos about the stadium rather than more or the same nonsense from Mark Cooper.

Cooper has outstayed his welcome at this s great club now.

I'm right behind the players though, but cannot bring myself to hear anymore of Cooper's rubbish in interviews.

not mr Coopers fault, but 80% of the questions/time was devoted to the interviewers fawning over the opposition, it is swindon on saturday and not Juventus who fgr are playing ?

Swindon to have a field day against an increasingly frustrated and disgruntled set of players
STFC 6 FGR 0

Sorry my head is still ruling my heart, Swindon 3 - 1 FGR

Don't see anything other than a defeat, but I hope to be proved wrong. Swindon 3 FGR 0

Dread to think, probably a 4 nil drubbing and MC exiting the door (just a pipe dream I have). Feel for the players, in need of a good coach and MC back to the managerial lines.

going and dreading it but would love SWI 1-1 FGR

Im thinking ( hoping ) 1 1 You must be able to get a result sometime.
..and what better time than helping out your best friends and neighbours Chelts

After a dearth of watching FGR recently
I can only see a defeat 4.1 a s we get a late consolation......
Doyle is a class act and a hat trick beckons.
Do I go and watch the humiliation or listen to Bob Hunt going oh dear oh dear on multiple occasions

Waiting to see if Scunthorpe hack the Ginger Pele, or any other key Town players, to the ground before making my forecast.... I am not wildly optimstic about our hopes, but maybe we will rise to the challenge against the odds.

Back to my La La land: Swindon 0 - 1 FGR.

Can see a big defeat here - possibly 4-0 to the Reds.

Ok. I reckon our boys will do their best and fight hard, but injuries of key players (Faz being out of action now being the very last thing we need, presuming he still will be) will be our big problem. Actually reckon we might play better there than we did last year. Swindon 2 - 0 FGR

Really looking forward to this one, nothing like a proper against the odds, backs to the wall type away game. Real test of character for everyone on and off the pitch. Brings back some good memories, can remember lots of times when we've been written off and produced a big performance. Let's hope Saturday is similar. Reckon we can get something. 2-2

Lets just beat them. Then even if they naff off to Div1 we would have had the last laugh and that's always the longest.

Pre match views from Cooper...

Quote
Forest Green head coach Mark Cooper wants his side to play without pressure at table-topping Swindon Town

CALMNESS personified; Forest Green head coach Mark Cooper wants his side to enjoy themselves when they face champions-elect Swindon Town.

Cooper’s team were challenging at the top end of the table when the west country rivals last locked horns in December, fighting out a high-octane 2-2 draw. Rovers’ form has nosedived since – winning just two out of their last thirteen games and six defeats in their last eight games, but with 11 matches to go Cooper wants his side to play without pressure.

Cooper discusses the challenge of facing his former club, his admiration for Swindon Town boss Richie Wellens, playing on one of the best pitches in the league, latest injury news, Christian Doidge’s form at Hibernian and his personal coronavirus precautions.

Guessing you mean Cambridge at home on Boxing Day? Crawley was Fryers and Baudry. Worth pointing out our 7 game winning run that took us top coincided with Fryers and Baudry coming together at centre back and they were a constant until the Cambridge game where Fryers was injured.

Benda also came in just before the Baudry Fryers debut, think a detailed analysis of your CB combo should look at the GK and holding midfielder as well.

Very nice to see a couple of very old mates of mine on BBC breakfast local news this morning about their 30 years of continuous following of every Swindon game. Derek Elston and Rob Hartley. Both well known to many TEF'ers. Derek based in Northampton and Rob who often does commentaries on BBC Swindon for away games.

I understand the feature is to be broadcast later on BBC Points West too.

They are both closely followed by Jason Haines who I think is on 992 consecutive Town matches, although he is not on the BBC feature he is often on Channels 5's documentary series "Paddington Station 24/7" in which he is one of the head controllers at the Swindon signalling centre.

FGR are clearly in a bad run, which in recent years would have worried me as awe have been the unwitting catalyst for the end of a few winless runs in that time. However, as we’ve seen already, this Swindon side has generally been more effective in winning even when we haven’t played at our best.
FGR don’t score many (apart from in the odd game) which also brings cause for some optimism, as we Create chances and have goalscorers in our team. A reasonable weather outlook too, so hopefully no wind tunnel issues.
Should be a Swindon win, 2-0 again.

Hi All
Just wanted to make you all aware that there is something special occurring at the game tomorrow against FGR. Have a look at the TrustSTFC website (link below), for details, but we have Tifo's, flags in the DRS and Town end, and asking all Arkells stand fans to bring their scarves and all this will occur when the players come out, should be amazing and really help cheer on the team to a win :-)

thanks.

I went to primary and secondary school with Jason.  He is indeed on 992.  Nearly missed one due to the Newport game ticket debacle but to keep the run going sorted out a table in hospitality.

Looks like the home game against Cheltenham will be 100 for him.  Impressed that the family have let him do it.

Astonishing achievement.  If you assume an average of 50 games/year, I'm guessing the 992 game run would have started around 2000...and those years were not happy ones for the club.  True dedication!

This will be my third season (hopefully) doing every game and my 16 year old lad is on for it this season and only missed one last season, Crewe away.
Not missed a home game for 10 seasons now and on 1650 games without a divorce.

Derek Elston has now done every 1st team game home and away since 1980 a run of well over 2,000 and Rob Hartley every game since 1985 a run of over 1,800.

Grant would be a massive loss if hes not fit, he did hobble off on Tuesday with his shinpads off, fingers crossed though as he will be desperate to play.

FGR in the away game had no boss in midfield and him and Doughty played well there, as they always do, the only player to save FGR that day was Mills, who appears to be out injured.

Mark Cooper not ingratiating himself with the FGR fans still.

Quote
Cooper's statements are the linguistic equivalent of a "professional" foul, though at least that sometimes has the virtue of "taking one for the team" rather than only about oneself. Otherwise known as, "I'm on to a good thing here,a five year contract and a Board who are not football people. The suckers who bought season tickets can watch my terrified kids. Tenth or nineteenth, who cares ? Gimme the money, honey.
Get behind Swindon ! I would much rather lose five nil if it got rid of him than putter along with a few goalless draws and waterlogged pitches saving his neck.
Anybody remember the spirit of Revie's Leeds in the seventies ? Revie eventually dumped them for Saudi Arabian money. Perhaps Mark imbibed that spirit like maternal milk ! Can't Mark get a nice international coaching offer, perhaps from Iran or South Korea ? Or how about North Korea ? Tthey'd love his verbal manner, treatment of his players and management style there !

Sadly, unless he goes, I will be among those multitudes not renewing season tickets. I'd rarher watch Brimscombe. Not, of course, that I am of any importance: I am just one of the hapless pay-in-advance crowd. I'll still attend because the poor, desperate kids deserve our sympathy. They seem to have been signed or naughty-stepped randomly and en masse, knowing that they are dependent for their future on the whims of a man whose first act this season was to put his son at the top of the retained players list. Without becoming unduly political, Cooper is a phenomenon of the dictatorial fashion of the times which have produced Trump, Erdowan, Bolsanaro and worse. He will never walk. That takes honour rather than cupidity.
A one-trick coach whose tactics function, albeit rather tediously, as long as the opposition never score, he will eventually leave FGR without a backward glance. Not fit to lace his father's boots, but maybe that's his underlying psychological problem. He has kept himself in power by creating temporary alliances with those whom Lenin called "useful idiots" (no offence to Matt Mills intended). Reading the Journal piece with Chris Stokes this week, it reminds us that talking loyal rubbish to the press comes with the territory of being selected.
The beautiful game struggles on. All over the world, it has been harnessed and exploited by and for the few, not the many. Cooper is one of the flies noshing the sick body. Time for Blake, writer of the club anthem "Jerusalem" !

Echoes thoughts of so many. The normal local footie fan who just turns up at 3 to watch a match are no longer either wanted or cared for it seems. I’m just attending various different Stroud league matches and seem to be enjoying that more than attending TNL. Very sad to say.

Exeter (WWLDD) away at 15th place Walsall (LWDWD)

Northampton (LLWLW) home to 21st place Mansfield (DDLWL)

For all his faults, Cooper did send out a side that liked to play it on the ground.  At times, the football was attractive too.

Looked shockingly downbeat and low on confidence in the video interview earlier.  Cooper's days are surely numbered.  A  big home win today might be being cruel to be kind but he has a long contract and it is surely for the best for both club and manager that they both "move on".

Would love a big win today.  With no Lyden and possibly no Grant, our resources on defensive midfielder options are becoming rather thin.  Not that Danny Rose is too shabby.

Fingers crossed we get early this season Anderson and not last season Anderson!
True, earlier this season he seemed to play better partly because he had a point to prove after Wellens' pretty public man management of him had exactly its desired effect.

Hopefully he now also feels like he's got something to prove, after several months on the sideline.

Well Joseph Mills their leading scorer and best player is still out, thats gotta be good for the Town, he was their only threat in the away game.

They haven't played in 2 weeks so hopefully they are rusty and we can get straight out of the traps at them.

FGR make 4 changes from their last game and seem to be playing 4-4-2 today rather than his prefered 352/361 he has been playing recently.

Decent starting line up, reinforces the point made after the Scunthorpe game that ball playing centre backs are an absolute priority for Wellens with Broadbent dropping out again.

Nah I think Wellens reads this forum and took my CB breakdown and picked the defence based on those figures..... :D

If ever you wanted a barometer of how well the Club is doing this season, it's the 8 pages of chat in the Match Day Thread before the game has even started.  We used to struggle to get on to page 3.

Can't be there today, having screwed up my ankle earlier in the week.  But looking forward to following things on here.  Encouraging starting line up.

Absolutely, hope the ankle gets better soon mate.

Looks like FGR have brought about 400, a good turn out for them.

See, I think you take their goal away and that was better than we have played in a while.  Their goal has changed the context of the game though, and the crowd are allowing that to cloud their view as well.  We should be 3-1 up and the last 10 mins has been all us.

Title: Re: Swindon v Forest Green Rovers pre match chat and matchday thread
Post by: Peter Venkman on Saturday, March 7, 2020, 16:46:32
Well Northampton, Grimsby and Scunthorpe we played much better 2nd half against all of them.

The game is very much still there for us to win, we need a bit of a shake up though to make it happen.

FGR have a spoiling game plan and hit us on the break, we just need to get to grips with the passing, as FGR won't keep up this pressing on us that they were first half.

As possession wise I would say yes we have easily been on top, but I think too few of our passes long and short have not found their target. Our finishing too hass been below par, hardly testing the keeper who looks quite poor from what he has shown when under pressure.

Title: Re: Swindon v Forest Green Rovers pre match chat and matchday thread
Post by: RobertT on Saturday, March 7, 2020, 16:50:17
They have had one threatening attack and they scored because Caddis backed out of the clearance a little.  Yates should have scored at least one, maybe two with the rebound.  Doyle should have done better and DJ had a couple blocked.  If we create as much in the second half, the law of averages would have us win the game.  If we up our game, even more chance.  They covered a lot of ground in that first 30, it’s already showing with spaces between their midfield and defence when we get through them now.

It’s by no means certain, we could get frustrated, we could kiss more chances, but we have every chance of winning this still.

Beaten the keeper twice.  Yates cleared off the line and if he puts any height on it he scores.  Anderson back off the bar.

See that’s what I mean. You missed the two other chances where Stevens only just failed to connect in front of Benda, then REG nearly shanked in a second. And we were often forced into backward fancying or long punts because they pressed us well. Yes, we got chances in the last 5-10 minutes but it’s a bit silly not to give them any credit.

One to write off, move on and regroup for the next game.

Play Isgrove from the off.

We haven't played very badly but we have not played well by any means, no good performances by Town, some awful defending to add to it.

FGR had a game plan and stuck to it and chased us and closed us down all over the pitch, we dodn't have the quality today to break them down, too many poor perfeormers from usually reliable players.

Doughty's worse game for months.

No player had a great game, far too many misplaced passes.
Hit the bar, post and on any other day Yates would have scored.

Off the top on goal difference, but still a game in hand.

Won't lose any sleep about losing to FGR.  Like Rushden before them, they prob won't even exist in 10 yrs from now.  You can buy a league place, but it never lasts forever.

Shame to be knocked off top but obviously the game in hand is still there. In some ways, losing this game and slipping to second might be exactly what’s needed to focus minds for the run in. Walsall have done us a favour beating Exeter so the gap to 4th is maintained.

Definately more a game that we squandered rather than FGR won, not taking away from FRG who had a game plan that today worked but even with that we should have buried them by half time.

One of Yates worst game in a Town shirt.

We were not great today but FGR were worse. The luck just went their way.

I was disappointed that Isgrove was dropped , because he was on form and links up well with Caddis and others. We need at least one penetrative runner with an end product, and DJ is not that, he's too selfish and doesn't release it at the right time. I'm a big fan of Wellens, but on the face of it IMO that's probably the first big mistake he has made in selection.

Title: Re: Swindon v Forest Green Rovers pre match chat and matchday thread
Post by: Batch on Saturday, March 7, 2020, 18:31:54
Well shiiiit.

FGR did a very good job of closing us down and stopping us from playing from the back, credit there. But also while we had a lot of the ball I thought we weren't really that cutting with what we did with it. That said, with a bit of luck on our side we'd have scored 3 or 4.

FGR held shape and looked a bit livelier as we tried to attack.  They scored when they put two very good crosses in (defending could have been better) but did fuck all else to hurt us.

Yates was off the pace today, but quite what Muskwe adds at this stage of his career is a bit of a mystery. Woolery is miles better right now, though I guess he's not being played because he's off. Though Doughty was below his best but still a good bet to unlock things, and that Anderson was probably our best attacking threat.

Massively frustrating and disappointing but its going to happen to us and others too.

The ref was a dick mind, I'm sure that was a penalty and what a difference that goal would have made to a fragile opposition.

No positives from the game today.

They pressed us from the start, got a lucky early goal and we never got going.
We hit the post twice and had a stonewall penalty decision go against us.

That has to be the worst referee we have ever had at the County Ground, what an absolutely useless cunt.

That aside, we deserved nothing from the game today.

Forget it and move on.

Better still, learn from it & move on.  Couldn't make it today, but even though luck didn't go our way, sounds like FGR did a job on us today.  (Silver lining: they'll be stuck with Cooper a while longer.)  Challenge for us now is to identify what could have been better today, make the most of it and then make sure this blip doesn't turn in to something more serious.

Referees can after the game report managers, there should be a way of managers reporting referees.

It won't change the result but it will highlight errors by referees, which this season there have been an inordinate amount of errors by officials.

Todays ref was up there with the worst I have seen, seemed very anti Swindon.

It wasn’t an attempt to play the ball, he just went through Doyle to stop him getting the ball so a red for me.

subjective. And with that ref it was going to be a yellow.

Another thing, the referee didn't know the handball rule either. Gave one against Grant that flicked up off his foot and I'm not sure it even touched his hand, but even if it did shouldn't have been given...

We were shit today but on another day those fucking woodwork efforts go in and we're all talking about a wonder strike from Yates.

One thing to consider, we have been playing in only 1st/2nd gear for several weeks now but still managing to get results.

Today it didn't click and with that, it gave FVR an opportunity (or two) to unpick us. I still stand by that had one of those chances gone in, FVR would've wobbled/changed their strategy and we would've gone on to win. That's why I said it at HT but today there wasn't even luck on our side.

Who the fuck switched off the wind tunnel? I blame "Beardy Blue Vest" in the Town End!

On we go. At least we kind of afforded ourselves a loss and that may have made us a little complacenct. This loss may well turn out to be a "good" thing. To refocus on the task and we still have a G-i-H.

We were pretty crap today. But it's the first home game we've lost since September. We've won 4 and drawn 1 of the last 6, so 13 pts out of a possible 18, slightly better than 2pts per game. Promotion form. Said before and I'll say it again, all the top 5 sides will drop points between now and the end of the season. Today was our turn. And Exeter's. Again. I'd rather have our form than theirs over the last 6 games. We have more than enough about us to secure promotion.

So while it's always annoying to drop points against FGR, we will be back in League One next season while they have another season of flattering to deceive in this shit league with an early hint at play-offs/promotion before they bottle it back down to midtable again. Enjoy.

Why don't we seem to have the balls for derbies or cup games? Don't want to be a doom merchant but a shit run now would be catastrophic

10 games to go.... it now starts to get difficult,as you can't just conjure up wins on a whim. 4 home 6 away.  Of the 4 home games.... Numb we know about, Crawley are hard to beat get a lot of draws and Salford are like FGR better on the road than at home. Orient probably presents a good opportunity. We'll need to cash in on the 4 away at the sides with dodgy home records..... Oldham who are up next aren't the worst at home, and probably still have a terrible pitch.

Still in the mix but a very long way from a done deal.... prepare to fret.

Or maybe, just maybe, we had a bit of an off day today. You know, like all teams do. We're still in best form of the top four. 4 points clear of 4th, with a game in hand and despite your panting predictions of doom, we actually have the easiest run-in of all the top 5 (not easy, but easier than the others). So maybe some small glimmers of hope among the despair.

Will be interesting to see how Crewe handle the pressure of being top having chased us for a few weeks. Now they are top it's a different pressure and away to Mansfield and Colchester the next two games.

You can get these results at this time of year. 2009/10 Bristol Rovers beat us 4-1 at home all with counter attack goals in the middle of a decent run of form. Last season we won 3-1 at Bury when our season looked dead.

I think FGR had the advantage of not playing for two weeks and us playing Tuesday night. That allowed them to press us all over the pitch and the goals came at the right time to let them drop back late on.

Be interesting with the top 3 having back to back away games Sa. Plymouth have the long trip to Morecambe and then Leyton Orient on the Tuesday.

A difficult watch today - it felt like “one of those days” at half time - no matter what we did we wouldn’t have scored.
In terms of play, chances etc we could easily have won the game - FGR scored with their first attack, which gave them something to hang on to, and similar in second half.
Yates should have scored before half time, and on another day either of the efforts hitting the woodwork would have gone in. The penalty decision was ridiculous - the ref bottled the big decisions today - the foul on Doyle, and  the assault on Anderson ought to have brought a red. His inability to deal with ridiculous time wasting - allowing players to feign injury to break up play and they sprint on immediately, and the Grant / their No 19 throw in issue were the worst examples. Very poor referee.
Hunt was our best player IMO. Too many of our forward /midfield players were slightly off the pace.
I agree with RW’s post match thoughts - we just need to win the next couple of games.

Anyone hear Wellens comments after the game ??.

Along the lines of:
- They had 2 chances and took them well
- If you're going to lose a game, that's the way to do it. Players never gave up right to the end
- Ref was poor and completely lost it for 10 minutes of the game. Mentioned the left back who couldn't hold a ball that the ball boy passed it to him
- Players have been brilliant, especially at home to not lose since September. Will bounce back at Oldham
- Rued chances we had (Anderson bar, Yates cleared off the line and post), would have been a different game

Must admit yesterday was shit, the referee ruined a poor game and our luck was just out.  As already stated,  2 off the post,  1 off the bar, 1 off the line and a stone wall penalty not given,  don't know where the ref was looking even a blind man could have seen that one,  another day and one of those chances gone in it would have been a different game.  Not panicking yet, just need to carry on where we left off and write this one off.

One thing I am beginning to notice is that Broadbent is becoming the new Miles Storey or Tom Smith with what seems massively overinflated opinions of his ability and irrational demands for him to play. I’ve seen a number of people say if he had started we would have won yesterday but that just nonsense as we were poor all round. He’s an adequate back up but that’s it in my opinion and let’s not forget he’s 28 so hardly a kid learning his trade.
Doesn’t help that as soon as you give reasons why he has dropped out you get what i guess is his dad or another relative just respond with sarcastic reactions.
Wellens gets to see him in training everyday and knows how he wants us to play so I trust his judgement, although that said I’m beginning to wonder what the deal is with Admiral.

Can I ask anyone who uses ifollow to complain on the official site about the ridiculous use of replays. The more of us that do then they might actually do something.

In regards to yesterday’s game , fryers was at fault for the first goal. He was totally oblivious to their striker and left him in loads of space.
The second was a cock up between Caddis and reg.
Was t our day and the ref was nearly as frustrating as the ifollow replays

Also, why do they have to cut the post match commentary so quickly? Surely they could let the commentary run, as it used to, so we can hear the manager's post match summary!

AS for replays, I'll complain about the overuse/poor timing but maybe it would be better to scrap them altogether and we can just use the rewind/slow function for any moment we care to replay.

Highlight of the afternoon was probably the shenanigans in the TE...a fair few made a hasty retreat when they saw the size of the plain clothed meat heads who turned up as reinforcements behind the goal!

It looks as if the club has employed the pick of the local bouncers who are on standby in a nearby location if it ever kicks off...they should probably don a hi vis though :D
Loved the TE chanting you will be sacked in the morning as he was escorted out of the ground, the stadium manager going nuts at it as well.  My understanding is that the blue vests are professional bouncers with the required SIA training which a lot of our dopey stewards are not.  A tad over the top and they are always confrontational whn placed in those sort of positions.

TBF he was also responsible for a pretty impressive display pre-game on Saturday, and several others in this and previous seasons. Doesn't mean he doesn't sometimes talk some bollocks on twitter but he's far from unique in that regard and worth remembering he does quite a lot of good stuff while everyone's busy listing their criticisms of him.

People post all kinds of shit on their personal twitter.

If he'd been using the GWReds account I could better understand the point.

Yes, I know that. And other people also tend to be criticised if they act like dicks on twitter whether it's a personal account or not.

I don't see your point. He says things that rubs people up the wrong way. How is the platform relevant?

*Although he did use the GWReds account to speak for others on the immigration issue at least. And another couple of examples IIRC. Not that that really changes the point.

Isn't he just basically Celms bitch now?

It seems that way.

Possibly just Clem stirring the shite through his puppet again then?

Or maybe Jaybox has his own stupid opions. Who'd have thunk it.

Why would Clem be stirring shit though really? Him and Power have a good business relationship.

JayBox has clearly latched onto Clem, like he attempted to with Power and to a degree...JS-W. Of course both will use one another to their own satisfaction. It's pretty likely Clem has more power in this. When he's done with JB, he'll quietly break ties. Then we'll see JB call out Clem until the next business interest comes along (and so the cycle continues).

He does do a lot of good things for GWR and he should concentrate on that. Otherwise his constant passive, anti-Power slant, just makes him look like some sort of scorned lover. That's not business my man. Stick to what you're good at. Mekkin fleggs.

1) He's really good at making flags, banners etc and making large displays happen. That's not easy and he deserves to be applauded for it.
2) He also has some opinions which you may or may not agree with but he's entitled to hold and express those opinions. And if you disagree, you can go on twitter and argue the toss with him about it.

The two aren't mutually exclusive.

The (card) display at Wembley was about the only decent one to come out of that game  :)

So is all the stuff from that Jaxbox character on Twitter nonsense then? He was making it out that Power has thugs in plain clothes that waded in and laid into Town fans?
I would suggest that was bollocks.  The two guys in "plains clothes" were in fact the Stadium Operations Manager and his sidekick.  They never went into the TE, but directed the Deputy Safety Officer to escort one of the blue vests out of the ground.  It was all caused by Rocking Robin throwing a ball into the TE which eventually landed on the pitch at halftime, one of the stewards refused to give it back but it was eventually handed back by one of our subs who was having a halftime warm-up. Quite what went on after that but blue vest apparently waded in and got a fan in a headlock, that was when it all kicked off.   The Stadium Manager did not appear until it looked like getting out of hand!  Quite what caused the second bit of aggro during the second half I have no idea but I am pretty sure no fans were thrown out.

Isn't one just general crowd safety (first aid, toilets are over there mate etc) and the blue vests are actual security i.e. crowd trouble?

My understanding is that the blue vest guys are the professionals, ie fully SIA certificated whilst the others are merely "volunteers" who get paid for watching the footy

All stewards have to have SIA training certificate now and have done since I was stewarding back in the late 90s.

So basically taking this back to my original point his post that said Power is hiring thugs to lay into fans is clearly bollocks then. Last thing we want is idiots spreading crap like that as some of the more negative ‘fans’ will latch on to that and try and destroy the current positivity.

As an aside.
When did stewards first start appearing at footie matches ?
Most of them look like they were bullied at school or they are ex traffic wardens.

You are welcome mate.

Just trying to redress the balance of crap spoken about stewards on here that they are there "only to watch games".

They get masses of abuse from fans and without them we would be forking out tens of thousands of pounds extra on policing just to host games as we used to do. Whereas the stewards work for minimum wage for a few hours yet facing large amounts of abusive so called fans, often drunk and often aggressive.

A totally thankless task.
