Title: Painter & Decorator
Post by: mystical_goat on Wednesday, February 19, 2020, 13:27:06
Will they do just a room? I want my bedroom painted. Did the bathroom myself and it wasn't such a tidy finish! If they could do it how much should I be looking at? It's a fairly average sized double room.

Yes, most would do a single room. Just walls and ceilings, or woodwork too?

Just buy some masking tape for the edges and DIY. A lot cheaper.

I would get a quote as every time I have used a painter and decorator its been considerably less than I expected it to be.

Paid ours £120 a day - was for 4 weeks work so a bit different but shouldn't be more than a couple of hundred.

The finish is so so much better. Definitely worth it I think.

4 weeks decorating work, do you live in a bloody mansion in Westminster!

We completely renovated our house and he helped us with a lot of prep work too - basically a handyman that specializes in painting.

Got Frog Tape and it worked great in the kitchen but in the bathroom it took half the paint off the ceiling. I realise that's probably not the Frog Tape's fault.

Is it much more to get skirting & door frames done too? If not I guess they may as well whilst they're there.

About half a day, the only awkward thing is to do it properly you need to undercoat and gloss, and you can't do both on the same day.

It should be possible to do walls and ceilings in a day, as long as there aren't any holes where the filler would take a long time to dry. Edit - and as long as you aren't going for a lighter colour on the walls than you have currently.

Going dark. Dark blue on the walls. Would probably get a grey on the woodwork but might leave that.

That, I feel, would be as popular as a French kiss at a family reunion.

Get a mirror on the ceiling, voila no need to paint it and save a few quid?

Bearing in mind you live in Somerset, that could well be seen as a ringing endorsement in your neck of the woods :)

Ask for two quotes, with wood and without. If they're not confident of doing the walls and ceiling in a day, then the difference might not be drastic. Make sure to tell them it's grey for the wood, as that will need grey undercoat and ideally two top coats. I did a banister in grey eggshell recently and it looked mint.

Prices vary of course, and it will depend how local they are if they are having to come a few times, but I'd say expect £250-300 for the whole lot.

I reckon you should go red and white  :)

'STFC, on yer walls!'  :D

Thankfully Charred is not representative of the county as a whole.

Tempted to do this myself now. If I can get some paint, maybe online.

Send me a message if you want any tips. Biggest mistake most make is buying shit brushes.

B&Q were talking about doing deliveries left in pre-arranged places. Haven't checked lately though.
