We'll lose or draw, the meltdown will begin then we won't lose again for the rest of the season. 2-2, think woolery or isgrove will start. If baudry is fit who missed out I wonder..

*misses out

Tuesday evening, away from home, against a physical team, ex-player up front and they had a jammy win against earlier in the season...

2-0 Swindon, Doyle and Yates to start scoring again in front of 5655 (1,145 Town).

I also think we'll lose the top spot, ginger Pele will continue his goal drought, then we'll go on a decent run to the end of the season.

2-1 loss. Yates to score. 5,676 att. (1285 of us)

Would take a draw. Last "hard" away game of the season. Our run-in is a doddle in comparison to others.

https://twitter.com/FutJacques/status/1226645967765745664

1-1. Doyle. 5330 (1128).

Think it's time for a refresh a little. Expecting changes. I'd like to see Issy get more game time, but not tomorrow. We need power, pace and strength so Woolery comes back in, and Lyden alongside Grant should give us more control. DJ or Doughty is a coin toss.

Team:

Benda

Caddis
Baudry
REG
Hunt

Lyden
Grant
Doughty

Woolery
Doyle
Yates

Our away form is starting to concern me a little... I know our games have been tough but we haven't picked many points up away from the CG recently and the longer that goes on I think we'll start getting in a rut. Could really do with a win tomorrow, I don't buy the "run in is easy" stuff. It won't be easy at all and it's very Bradford of us to assume we have a right to win these games.

I'm not going all Reg and saying it's a must win, but I feel like it would be a big statement. 4 points from Carlisle and Northampton would be a great return.

I would go with that team except I wouldn't drop DJ I think he is integral to a lot of our attacking moves, I would say that team but with DJ instead of Woolery.

I agree with dropping Fryers back to the bench for this game if Vaudry is fit, Fryers was really poor on Saturday and needs more time off the bench before starting again.

Fair comment, although we seem be doing a little better v the top teams. Plymouth, Crewe and Exeter all beaten in 2020!

That's a really good way of putting it. Think one of the things that people are forgetting when we drop points and look at fixtures where they think we might drop points is that everyone else will do that too. Exeter, Crewe, Plymouth etc are not Liverpool, as Plymouth showed at the weekend. That said, I think we'll win at Sixfields and everyone will be fine again, until the next one :)

As I said last week, I fully expect us to lose tomorrow (I'm still going). But then we'll go on an unbeaten run until the end of the season and will win the league.

3-0 to the wobblers.

I've been to the ground twice and have a vague recollection of parking nr some restaurant, but any tips on the best places to park would be appreciated.

Northampton have had a lot of games recently including FA cup at home to Derby and the reply last week which they lost.
Have been playing Sat/Tuesday for about 4 weeks! Takes it out of a team hence not surprised they lost to PV at home on Saturday.

Hopefully their players are still a little jaded! Town 2-1!

To be fair our lot looked shattered (apart from Caddis) in the last 10 mins on Saturday!

If we play like we played Saturday I suspect we will lose, if we play like I am led to believe we can play we should at least get a point!

Swindon often do well in recent years at Northampton with just 2 defeats in the last 9 games there since 1986 Swindon winning 4 and 3 being drawn, every game decided by no more than 1 goal either way.

Players with links to each club are Danny Rose played for them, as did Hallam Hope & Keshi Anderson both in loan spells.

Andy Williams, Jordan Turnbull, Alan McCormack, Harry Smith, Lloyd Jones, Mark Marshall all ex Town players and ex Summer Town trialist Paul Anderson all play for the Cobblers.

Northampton have the 3rd best home record in the league, behind us in top and Crewe in 2nd place, 1 win less that Swindon with 10 wins from 16 and 4 defeats. At home they have scored 28 and conceded 11, the lowest goals against at home in the league.

Their leading scorers at Hoskins on 9 and Williams on 8 goals so far.

Saturday was their first home defeat since 5th October by Orient, a run of 9 games. It was also their first defeat of the year after they were trounced 4-0 at Crawley on Boxing Day.

Their form over the last 19 games has been excellent WWWDWWLWDLWWWDWWL earning 36 points.

Our form over that time is LWWWWWWWDWLWDWLWLWD earning 39 points.

So recent form has been pretty comparable although we have scored 11 more goals than them they have conceded 4 less than we have.

A couple of views from Cobs fans.

Quote
Perfect chance to bounce back from our first home defeat in 4 months with another home game on Tuesday. This time the leaders, who we beat at their place with a hell of a lot of fortune and a goal given despite being 4 yards offside. They've sold over a thousand already so a big attendance is guaranteed.
Think we need to win due to rivals having some decent games on Tuesday.

Swindon have only won 1 of their last 6 away games. In 16 away games they have scored 2 or more goals in 8 games but have also conceded 2 or more goals in 8 games.
Referee for this is James Adcock who I do not recall refereeing us before (have not checked his record)
Looking on the bright side, of the 92 league clubs Swindon are currently placed 69th.

As much as Yates being out is a loss, it might bring some better shape to the team because he clearly plays best in the same role Hope does.  This will force one of Isgrove or Woolery to come in on the right who may be better placed to serve Doyle, or we move to three in midfield and push DJ out wide with Doughty behind Doyle to thread balls through and get more possession.

Team for tomorrow I would go with:
Benda
Caddis
REG
Broadbent
Hunt
Grant
Lyden
Doughty
Woolery
DJ
Doyle

Lyden comes in to offer extra solidity in midfield and Broadbent/Woolery for Fryers/Hope respectively as both are better equipped to deal with Northamptons aerial threat at set pieces - which is their main strength. Also Hope offered little at Carlisle and Fryers looked as though he was coming back after a long lay off. Isgrove and the Admiral off the bench as needed. Also the return to a 433 formation offers Doughty the opportunity to get further forward and pace of Woolery and trickery of DJ to get at them out wide. I fancy Doyle to return to scoring ways in a 2-1 or 3-1 win for us, which will be great bearing in mind gusts of 45mph are scheduled for the Scunthorpe game on Saturday!

Should be able to watch 80% of the game whilst waiting for my trailer up at Coventry, so might make a sneaky ifollow purchase... Do I get the option to listen to the audio seperately as well when I've bought the video feed, as the DAB radios in the trucks are *shite* and I likely won't get the BBC coverage when I'm on the move!

A tricky game this one.
Saturday, Northampton had been on a good run, as some have said, our record on Tuesdays has been poor, and their style of play is  similar to the teams which have caused us most trouble - Newport and Col U. Also a concern that Baudry and Yates will be missing (assuming RW isn’t trying to con the opposition regarding our starting line up).
On the other side of the coin, we have a bigger squad now so we should be able to refresh things from Saturday if required.
A point tonight will be fine, a win would be a bonus.
I have a feeling we may sneak it with a late goal tonight - and we could all be saluting Admiral at 10pm.

I have to admit this is only the 3rd time this season that I have not felt confident going into a game about getting a result.

The other 2 were Crewe home and Newport away.

A point would be excellent IMO, a win would be one of the best results of the season if it happened.

Pre match eyelets & aglets in The Cordwainer.
Could be another windy one tonight.

Never made it to the old County Ground here, a proper three sided ground by all accounts.

One away win on a Tuesday in five years, but we have a good record when taking a 1,000 plus away fans this season.
Expecting a loss and a defeat would be a kick in the eye.
Needs one of those season defining performances tonight.

Maybe we are due a helping hand from a particularly dozy assistant for a change?
Or a last minute winner that would result in a frenzied collective St Vitus Dance in the away end and an invasion of the flat field.

Here's hoping.

It would be interesting to see overall stats for L2 teams over the same period with away midweek games i.e. whether it's actually just a general thing at this level or something we as a club aren't quite getting right in managing the additional load.

There is no reasoning for it, I don't think its even something the players or manager are aware of TBH.

Its interesting but really not sure why, and yes I don't know how it affects other teams or if its just us!

That's why I asked. If it's a general thing, it may then be just that levels of fitness at this level aren't great so a rapid of turnover of matches + travel means teams don't recover from fatigue as quickly, for example.

Looking back at results, there have been at least 3 games (IIRC) in that run where we never had a preceeding match on the Saturday yet still lost on the Tuesday. So that COULD be unlikely. There are so many contributing factors too like injuries and distance travelled, some players may not like to travel and play on the same day, just a thought.

That could be a factor, good thought. Although that would apply to plenty of Saturday games as well?

Possibly yes, although normally any games further than about 120 miles there is normally a night stay the evening before the game in a hotel.

It is obvious that some players do prefer to play home games rather than away, Isgrove for instance always seems to play better at home. A common thing with inconsistant wingers.

That's why I asked. If it's a general thing, it may then be just that levels of fitness at this level aren't great so a rapid of turnover of matches + travel means teams don't recover from fatigue as quickly, for example.
It’s the same for all clubs. Seeing as every Tuesday game doesn’t end in a draw, then some clubs win and some clubs lose. We tend to lose more than most.

I'm confident about tonight. We're top of the league with a good squad giving us options.
2-1 to us with Doyle scoring both goals with the winner in the 95th minute of the game with Wellens running to the away end and jumping in to join the mass celebrations.
Plymouth, Crewe and Exeter can only draw their games and we extend our lead at the top. COYR

But do we? That's the question. I'd love to see some stats on it, all we have at the moment is supposition and perception

How many away games on Tuesdays have we even had in the last few years? Take that into account, alongside the fact that we've generally been average at best over much of that period, and it probably won't look at all unusual I reckon.

You may well be right. My point is that we can't even really begin to assess whether our perceived Tuesday hoodoo is unusual or not until we have stats for what the norm is i.e. what is the average peformance of L1/L2 sides away from home midweek after a game at the weekend. Then we have a baseline to compare it with, until then it's just little more than a "feeling" that we're worse than most

Not necessarily so....

For example we've lost more Tuesday night games this season than the other 6 clubs in the top 7 added together.

That was my point. Whatever the logistics around playing on Tuesday evenings affects all clubs - if there is an actual effect at all. Whatever it is, or isn’t, it ain’t doing us any favours.

We won 3 Tuesday night away games in 2014-15.
Two were in Sat - Tue - Sat sequences and the other was Sat -Tue then a break.
That was a good team but didn't strike me as the fittest that we've ever had. Maybe they did something different in the preparation?
Who knows.

Indeed. But are we any more affected by it than other teams over, say, a 5-year period? And I'd differentiate between midweek away games and home games. There's clearly a difference there.

Maybe, as we’re top of the league, we should concentrate on the fact that we win more Saturday games than anyone else.

Doesn’t really matters what day we win or lose on as long as the end effect is getting promoted. At this moment in time losing 3 games on a Tuesday this season still sees us top of the league.

Stop trying to pick holes in what has bee, so far, successful season.

Good shout. The stat that really matters is whether we acrue more points than 21 other teams by the end of the season, not when we acquire them.

Did some quick number crunching over lunch, and here's our Midweek 7.45pm record since returning to the fourth tier (i.e. last 3 seasons):

League - P 21, W 5, D 3, L 13, F 22, A 33
League Home - P 10, W 3, D 1, L 6
League Away - P 11, W 2, D 2, L 7 (2-0 W at Forest Green on TV and 1-0 W at Stevenage, both under Flitcroft)

We've also played 14 midweek 7.45pm cup games in the last 3 seasons and our record reads:

P 14, W 4, D 0, L 10 (the wins coming against Wycombe, Bristol Rovers, Newport and Plymouth - all in Leasing.Com trophy!)

All in all, whether it's "hoo-doo" or something systemic at STFC, it isn't good!

Assuming no postponements.... something which has aided us this season thus far.  Given that Macc have missed is it one or two and you can get an unfortunate cup 3rd or even 4th round side, or perish the thought in Div 4, the international break, when a Newport or someone will have kids playing for Wales.... not taking into account the climate change weather, which may yet miss us a Saturday, amazingly we're on schedule...

Turbull will be doing his usual marking/holding job on Doughty then like he did in the first match, before he realised Doughty was offering little threat and broke away a few times himself.

               Benda
Caddis   REG     Fryers   Hunt
           Lyden   Grant
Isgrove     Doughty           DJ
                 Doyle

Lyden sitting deeper closer to Grant but being a bit box to box leaving Doughty not having to track back so much and DJ given a free role not really wide left. I recon.

Otherwise its a decent line up, attacking but not out and out attacking like we tried at Carlisle on Saturday.

That's what I mean but explained poorly. Hunt back at RB, Fryers at LB. Don't trust a CB pairing of Broadbean and REG. So Baudry back into CB asap.

If Doyle had his shooting boots on we would be 2 goals up.

Doughty hit and miss, sometimes brilliant sometimes awful.

DJ got the wrong boots on, so much more in him that hes showing so far.

Isgrove great going forwards not so great helping out Caddis/Hunt.

Very even with little between the sides, will take a great goal or a real fluke to win it.....queue Williams offside goal....

Fryers looks far more comfortable at left back and Hunt more so at right back.

Benda looking like Benda, missed a few crosses but did well when it matters.

Broadbent and REG doing well at CB really considering recnet form/experience.

Lyden not been in the game much so far.

Decent performance but way more to come from us.

We’ve lost a degree of fluency and control of games in recent weeks. We were passing teams into the ground before Christmas, but every game now we’re back in the mix. They could all go either way. I’m concerned that we’ve lost that degree of control we had. Too many players not at their best right now (Doyle, Isgrove, Fryers, Hunt). Too many hopeful punts, not enough of that precise passing that played teams off the park.

In a tight game, they’ve had the much better chances. We’re still in it, but I don’t have that confidence I had a few weeks ago that we’d prevail. At the moment, we’re just another half-decent L2 team.

I’d say it’s down to the weather. The last month almost without exception had seen ridiculous wind and heavy pitches that aren’t really suited to good football. Hopefully as the weather improves so will our play.

Again they’ve had bottom half teams since we played them. All the top 6 excluding us have to play each other, our chance to pull away will come in the coming weeks.

Another season defining win.  Crewe & Plym and Exeter all win too. Thought Yates scored with the final shot.

All to do it again but another game closer. We edged it as I thought we would. Remember, some of the others have to play each other. We only really have Numb left as a "dangerous" opponent. The title is ours to lose.

Cracking win.

phew. a much needed win and a clean sheet.

Doesn't matter how you win. As long as you win.

In the grand scheme of things a draw would have been fine. But in terms of keeping things on a roll - massive. Us fans get nervy for no good reason at the best of times, dropping to second could have started the nerves in the stands

Still TOP OF THE LEAGUE by 2 points.
Crewe have a game in hand and will take 1st place if they win that.
Exeter can match us on points if they win their game in hand, but we have a superior goal difference.
Plymouth in 4th will match us on points if they win their 2 games in hand, but we have a superior goal difference.

Below that, Colchester are 5 points behind 4th, having played 2 games more.
Northampton are 5 points behind 4th having played 1 game more.

A long way to go yet, but it's beginning to look like a 4 horse race.

Annoying that Colchester prevented us getting the clean sweep of victories against the top teams to shove that back down peoples throats! Oh and for a one man team we got all those points with only the solitary goal from Doyle!

Potentially a season defining win. Like Lincoln that year when RC-C "dropped" backwards. This time those saves by Benda tonight. Could be what we look back at, seasons end and say that was the night we knew we'd do it.

Away "deteriorating" record halted ☑
No win on a Tues night, answered ☑
Top of the league after Christmas ☑
Unable to beat Top 6 side rebuffed☑
"Just a one man team" put to bed  ☑

I'd prefer a draw but if one has to win, I'd rather it be Crewe. I think we've got enough to grind our way to the title. It feel like all the others are throwing everything at it. Yet we seem to be grinding victories/getting results (when it matters) on only about 2nd gear.

When this side is fully fit and firing on all cylinders. We're already a top 8 L1 side, in ability. I think that's what worries others in this league. No matter what they try, they can't break us.

We all know Town can play better but why waste extra energy going to gear 3/4/5 etc when 2nd gear is "just" enough.

Top of the fucking league!

Still a lot of work to do.... for sure had we not won then things wouldn't be looking so good. Since the start 2020 we've only had 2 game v sides in the lower half, Newport and Carlisle. We now need to make sure no complacency thinking we can beat the higher ranked outfits now so the lower ranked will be easy... they won't

Annoying that Colchester prevented us getting the clean sweep of victories against the top teams to shove that back down peoples throats! Oh and for a one man team we got all those points with only the solitary goal from Doyle!

The next five games are All very, very winnable and it is in our own hands to do this. 5/5 will at the very least cement a play off place. But as I have been saying since early season we are going up automatically.

I'm sure from the professional and management pov they will make sure that doesn't happen.

From a fans pov, it is nice just to enjoy it and put away a few myths and skeletons that have been lingering.

Onto Scunny, Grims & Manfield away. I'll envisage two wins and potentially dropping points away at Stags. Always tricky there. But 6pts from 3 games would be continued automatic form. 1.91 pts per game as it stands puts us on track for near 88pts.

Go on Reg, crack out the Pernod & Black for the ladies 😉:pint:

Shame that Plymouth and Crewe (again!) got late winners but if we keep getting the points then it doesn't matter,  enough others will drop away.

At present rate we will end up with 88 points which will be more than enough for an auto place.

Danny Rose's STFC career trajectory has been a strange one. He's a perfectly good player and RW recently said that he considers him to be one of the leaders of the team along with the likes of Baudry, Grant, Caddis and  Doughty.

And yet he's gone from not even being on the bench to Captain, back to not being on the bench. It's an unusual situation. You would think he would always be on the bench at the very least, if fit.

It’s all been said - good night’s work, an ejected steward to boot and more than your fair share of gobby locals. Good team performance. I was expecting a lot more from Northampton, but then, had Benda not made two good saves to stop Marshall and the late header, it would be a different discussion.

What are people’s views on REG? To me, he’s often too tentative and passive - he let’s the ball drop when he shouldn’t, and he plays like he lacks confidence. I’m conscious he is 19, and probably way ahead of his peers, but at centre back, it’s not easy been thrown into L2 when you’re used to the ball on the ground.

I thought REG was getting stuck in quite a lot last night, the main thing I've noticed is his eagerness to smash the ball upfield where we might see Baudry get it down and play a pass.

If Danny Rose can’t get in the squad let alone the team what’s the point in signing Palmer? I realise Wellens has probably got an eye on next season, despite what he says. The subs bench does seem overloaded with forward players to me - last night we had Hope, Yates, the Admiral, Woolery out of the 7. Only had Broadbent and Palmer as the other outfield players.

Chuck in Keshi when he’s fit and how does that work? Nice problem to have, I suppose, but I’d have swapped one of those 4 forward players for Rose on the bench last night.

Palmer and Rose are completely different players.

We should always have more attacking options on the bench so long as we have cover. The utility of our back 4, as shown last night, means we can get away with having a reduced number of defensive options.

Rose is a good player but with Grant and Lyden ahead of him, you're never going to need 3 CDMs in a matchday squad.

I thought for his years REG was excellent, yes he still worries me a bit at times but then so does Baudry and more so Fryers.

Broadbent did really well when he came on, did exactly what was needed, put the ball in touch a few times, won a fair few headers and played the short simple pass to Grant. He did well.

Benda still has one mistake a game in him, luckily it rarely costs us but his shot saving is exceptional, if he would come for crosses a little better he will be an amazing keeper at any level not just this one.

2nd in line for MoM for me after the Beast Grant who totally ran midfield.

Fryers looked far happier at left back than centre back and Hunt also looked better at right back than left.

Lyden first half was a passenger, lots of running but did very little, 2nd half he was brilliant, playing his natural game of bringing the ball out and setting up attacks.

Other than his cross for the goal Doyle had a bit of an off day and he badly needs a goal to kick start his confidence.

Doughty was hit and miss, some great some bad, typical Doughty really.

DJ wasted 2 great chances and couldn't control the ball, which for a player of his obvious talent is disappointing, hes usually far better.

Isgrove again was Isgrove, some great attcking moves but offers little protection for the right back, but thats not his game so can't really be expected to track back as much.

Yates coming on changed the game, all game Doyle was playing passes which Yates would naturally get on the end of only to find that DJ or Isgrove were nowhere near, he looked a bit frustrated, more with himself than anything.

Really good day at the office, first half quite even, 2nd half we controlled midfield and the game, Cobblers never threatened too much other than the 2 efforts Benda had to save, alongside Exeter home and Plymouth away possibly the best result of the season.

I should have more confidence in us being able to get results....but Swindon have let me down so often I find it hard to be confident, even if I should be.

My only (very) minor concern over the last few weeks is Doyle doesn’t look the same player we had before he went back to Bradford, although he is still working his ass off, that ‘spark’ seems to be missing.

Although it could be for a number of reasons, most unlikely but confidence seeing as he hasn’t scored for 6 weeks, the pressure and stress over the drawn out transfer, in need of a rest considering he’s played 90 minutes every week since the season began, or simply down to us not being at our free flowing best and creating as many chances lately due to the teams we have been playing and the weather.

As usual, thought of the opposition post game....
Quote
Most Swindon fans on their forum seem less than confident, hoping for a draw at best but expecting defeat
How very humble of our Wiltshire friends!

Swindon fans are class in my experience. Not many clubs I would say that about in this division.

**** poor.
Toothless going forward... again.

Not an awful performance but;
We lack any pace, real finesse up front. Very much a case of hump it up and hope. We are one dimensional.
Marshall looked useful. We need to use him better.
I know the Swindon scorer should have been tracked back but couldn't Cornell have come for that cross ?

Williams had a truly dismal game but who do you bring on in his place. We are badly short of options up top whereas Swindon can afford to have someone of Yates' quality on the bench.

The last two games have been so frustrating. Our solitary tactic has seemingly been to win a throw, let Goode take it and watch it get headed away by the opposition, and repeat.

I am Utterly fed up, pissed off call it what you will.... that every team we
Play, without exception, play better football than we do. Do we not have players that could play football? Course we do. They’re just not allowed to.
I’m serious. We need to get rid of Curle. I don’t even care if we don’t go up this season. It could be the worst thing to happen to us. Can you imagine us playing this style of football in league 1?? It would be an embarrassment.

Some people need to realise that a season finishing 9th or 10th will be viewed as a successful season

Thought that Swindon were not as good as their position suggested; unfortunately we looked a 6 or 7th placed play off fodder. We were not poor and matched Swindon ball for ball in the first half but became scrappy in the second and was disappointed with the midfield inability to take the game to Swindon. However two 0-1 defeats is not a crisis but highlights our deficiencies in critical areas particularly in midfield.

It was hilarious watching the ball hoofed up to Morton, he just get bullied off the ball.

Played OK first half and matched them, but offered nothing in the second

Two very different styles of play but nothing between the teams in a game that should have been a draw. The Swindon keeper had to work much harder than Cornell who didn't have to make a meaningful save. I'm assuming someone lost the runner for the goal.
We played our usual game and did have chances but seem to forget that Marshall gives us a new option. We hardly passed the ball to him in the second half even though he could beat the fullback at will.

I personally thought that the midfield was lacking in creativity and the drive to trouble Swindon particularly second half.

What worries me is that KC thinks he's some sort of tactical genius. How many times tonight did we nearly get caught out by only leaving one man back when we had a corner and they put 2 upfront and spread them wide, they broke on us every time. It's a massive ****, to say it's schoolboy stuff is an insult to schoolboys. KC thinks it's a good idea but no one else in football does it, so is he a tactical genius or just another stubborn manager ?

A poor result but ironically a better performance than the one that saw us nick 3 points at theirs earlier in the season. Their keeper made 3 decent stops but other than that we looked pretty flat and as soon as they scored the game was lost.
The worry is we're happy enough to plod along at our own pace and hope we score but we're terrible at chasing the game when we go behind because we lack the ability to go up a gear; we just panic and aimlessly lob the ball forwards even more than usual.

180 minutes of clueless dross the last 2 games - no goals the result of no creativity in the team - relying on throw ins and corners and aimless lumps forward - and at no point did we actually look like scoring.

I must be in a minority - I thought we were second best in every department and Swindon really impressed me as a well drilled unit. Their keeper was impressive, the defenders won nearly every header and the midfield picked up on every second ball. I thought doughty, grant and Lyndon worked hard and we’re also decent on the ball and they clearly had scouted us thoroughly by playing 3 up top spread across the field. I lost count of the amount of times they caught us on the break and I agree with barton in that KC’s obsession with leaving 1 on 1 or 2 on 2 from our own set pieces was shown to be naive to say that least. We looked really disjointed all over and now the goals have dried up completely. First half Marshall was a danger but second half they must have done a job on him as he became anonymous. Lines came off and had a hissy fit but I can’t see that he has any grounds to complain - he is so lightweight it’s untrue, to state the obvious we desperately need McCormack back but I fear that even when he does eventually make his comeback he will soon break down again.

first half performance OK but second half Swindon bossed it.

Swindon were no great shakes. In fact I don't expect that at this level. But they tried hard to play football.

I think it should be noted that Swindons manager wasn't even there yesterday due to illness and so they had an Assistant in charge. That assistant had more tactical awareness than Keith Curle. That for me brings massive alarm bells.

I don't particularly like it, but I can understand,  the route 1 hoof it up field every opportunity football when Smith and/or Oliver are up there trying to win it.

Keith Curle says his plan B is more of plan A, enough said........
A mid table finish, with this squad, in this league, not good enough, the sooner he’s gone the better.

It looked a bit floaty at first. If I were at the game I'd have thought he'd cocked it up and be in the middle 'uuuuu' of 'for fucks sake' just as Lyden nodded it in :)

---

I can see what JJ is getting at, but Benda's cross claiming is 99% excellent IMO. He just once or twice comes when he shouldn't. But very rarely.

He's only 21, which is about 13 in keeper years. Reckon he's going to do alright in this game.

The cross ultimately turned out to be a good one. Think that has more to do with the run from Lyden.
If he doesn’t make that run from deep, it’s a shit cross. Only Doyle can tell you whether he aimed to hit Lyden in his stride or not.

If I’m a Northampton player I’m going mental at the midfield that has let Lyden go.

As you suggest, fair fuucks to Lyden, a defensive midfielder making that run late in the game. Even if the run made the cross, it was excellent service from Doyle.

Wonderfully competitive second half performance all round.  And credit to those of you who made the trip to give the lads your support.

Even early into the second half last night I said to my son that I would take a nil-nil as the big lumping forwards of the ball and long throws were reminiscent of Newport, and they would sooner or later get that lucky bounce in the box which Benda thank goodness made a great save from. If anything apart from the odd occasion, the more they went direct the stronger we got and began to look a far better side winning the first and second balls and playing it out on the deck.

Tremendous cross from Doyle, timed run from Lyden and hey ho we were looking even better, and my instinct (for better or worse) told me that this win could be a real point in the season where we just ploughed on to promotion, four points from two difficult away a games in
not very good playing conditions.

As an aside, bit cheesed off that the goal that numb scored at Carlisle looked offside to give them the win.
