Following on from a 4-0 midweek victory at Colchester, Town go one better with a 5-0 demolition of closest rivals Exeter.

The returning Yates and Doyle with a brace apiece and a Doughty penalty put the Clotted Creamers firmly in their place.

Must go. Gotta to wake soon.

Wellens would be putting 4D on extra running this week. Never focus beyond the next game.

The only grain of comfort if we throw this one will be to get back to blaming everything on 4D.

If we do manage to get Yates and Doyle back, with the two additions on top of that and some players back to fitness, we start to look well set for the remainder of the season and the two teams we simply can;t cope with are out of the way.  A win in this one puts us in a very strong position for the final third of the season.

Doyle and Yates back in the fold (hopefully) then i can see 2-1 Swindon. Me and my mate are coming up for this one. Fingers crossed it's better than the last game we saw together which was Bradford!

Although I have a lot of faith in this side I do still worry about how we set up against some of the more physical sides. Plymouth, Crewe and Exeter keep chugging along and getting results. When we lose a game we seem to lose by 2 or 3 goals. Just me being nervous?

To be fair we were also grinding out results not too long ago. Newport was an absolute write off as even Barcelona would struggle to get the ball down on that pitch.

Yep. We'll be fine. The converse of us losing by 2 or 3 is that a) we don't lose often b) Exeter for example seem to only win by narrow margins, doesn't take much for those narrow wins to turn into draws which would see them tail right off

The positive about Doyle and Yates being recalled and then coming back (on the assumption that Doyle does sign) is that Yates has had a decent rest. As we know the guy never stops running but has deserved his break. Hopefully he'll come back stronger! Doyle hasn't had as much rest but didn't play Tuesday.

Both these players are going to come back fresh and hungry for our biggest game of the season!

Lyden
Grant

Yates
Doughty
DJ

Doyle

I would agree, its going to be interesting to see how Hope reacts as I cannot imagine he signed here to sit on the bench.

That's where RW comes in - horses for courses, squad game etc. If both DJ and Doughty weren't in such good form, Hope would have a shout over one of them. Right now, they both play.

That's a mighty squad again, and still with Woolery, Anderson, Conroy and Iandolo to come back. That lot would trouble League 1.

You can see why we might well offload one this week.

We couldnt have that bench as we need a home grown player on it so 6 maximum, probably no Reid.

Iandolo counts as homegrown but he's injured.  Curran unfortunately doesn't. So Twine it is. Only alternative would be to use Henry instead of McCormick as backup keeper.

Isn't Henry out on loan at Hereford?

I could easily see Hope, Yates, Doyle & DJ all starting, with Lyden & Woolery dropping back to the bench, or Doughty.  I think Wellens likes the two up top when one of them is a player like Yates who will work hard, and the midfield has Grant in it to cover the back four.

Nice to have choices again.

Given Doyle would probably have got a hat trick at Colchester, would be god to see him pick up where he left off.

Yes, but believe it was 'short term'.  Not necessarily for the weekend but something to consider that could give better outfield options. Especially given the number of times a sub keeper is used

My only possible change would be Broadbent for REG. REG played well against Vale, where he wasn't tested defensively, but looked suspect when under pressure against Colchester. Of course he's young, will make mistakes and will only get better etc etc...

Both straight into the starting 11 for me.

Benda

Caddis
REG
Baudry
Hunt

Lyden
Grant

Yates
Doughty
DJ

Doyle

The club are making a big fuss about expecting a large crowd for this one. Just looked at online ticketing and it doesn't look like we've sold many more home tickets than usual?!
Exeter have sold around 1,600 with walk ups too may be a few more, our last home game attracted just over 7,100, I would think we will add a few hundred more IF we sign the GP today, that will be over 9,000 which is only 500 less than the Plymouth game and they brought about 1,000 more than the far poorer supported Exeter will.

That will be a decent turn out IMO.

Adding Exeter's 1600, as it stands I'd guess at around 9500-9800 sold so far. Plenty of time to go, and the Ginger Pele's imminent announcement will lead to a stampede for tickets.

So assuming Isgrove is injured our bench is likely to have Hope, Muskwe and Woolery on it if the starting lineup is as most of us expect. Decent firepower and attacking options there.

Surely they are going to open up the other block in the Arkells as looking at the ticket site there’s only about 1000 tickets left.

Yeah, just went to online ticketing to have a look. There's only 2 in my entire DRS block free. Blimey. Think the 11K figure is correct.

Nothing. You can either print it at home or just pick it up from the window on match day.

UTC - lets see 2500 'owners' there on Saturday to show what a fan-owned club's support sounds like.
PS to the Red Legion - please support your club in it's hour of need on Saturday whether you've got your banner back or not - YOUR CLUB NEEDS YOU NOW !

Sugar Daddy buying the league? do you know Lee Power :D

It’s not going to be far off a sell out now as there is a big feel good factor around the club at the moment.

After an exhaustive view of e-ticketing and a bottle of red, I estimate approximately 1600 home tickets left for purchase, being 860 in Don Rogers, 270 Arkells and 475 Town End.
Reckon we have sold just over 8100 home tickets + Exeter 1600 gives us a pre match sales figure of 9700. Should therefore be on for 10500-11000 with walk ups.
Cant wait for what should be a great atmosphere and occasion- 3 points please!!

No it doesnt Theakston. Also excludes A6U in the Arkells, which is greyed out on e-ticketing. Hence much reduced capacity.

Did you get Diane Abbott to do the maths for the Don Rogers? No way is there close to 860 left in there!

I’d say the Arkells figure is accurate, so that unused block will surely be made available for walk ups.

The 3 TE blocks close to the DR are almost full so it must be 10k all in as an absolute minimum.

Was thinking earlier I'm delighted Doyle and Yates have returned, but I'm most excited by seeing what this lad can do. Be ironic if he emerges as the best one out of all three of them having been overshadowed somewhat by JY and ED returning.

The attacking options in this squad now borders on cheating.

It's looking like a cracking turn out and they've opened up the last block of Arkells at the Town End. Plenty of noise and a massive 3 points to continue the push.
Like so many have said please don't be like after the Lord mayor's show.

3-1 one of which a Grant thunderbolt and one a piece for the dynamic duo.

Left it to a mate to sort tickets out and they've got us tickets right down the bottom corner of the DRS near the Bank. Not often theres that little available. T2 and T3 sold out in the TE too.

Plenty still available down the bottom of the DRS and Arkells so I'll still go with 10 and a bit K for the crowd.

It should be a lot more than that. I calculate c1.4k home tickets left, now that the last section of the Arkells has been part opened. So nearly 9k home tickets. Got to be 11k minimum with walk ups.

Ah fair enough. Still seems like quite a few left to me. The first block in the Arkells nearest the Town End isn't completely open by the way, the tickets there are unavailable because they're not for sale. What is the total that all three can hold anyway?

Difficult game to call tomorrow - both teams coming of the back of 3-1 away defeats in midweek. Hopefully we won’t have been distracted by the ballyhoo surrounding the returns of Doyle and Yates.
Exeter don’t score a huge number of goals, but will probably set up defensively if 5 successive clean sheets before Tuesday is an indicator.
I think this may be a cagey affair, with both sides seeking primarily to avoid defeat. A draw would be fine for us in the context of edging towards that target of 84 or 85 for top 3.
I think this could end 1-1.
As always I am looking forward to the game and hoping for a win !

That would be a very good signing. He was linked to a few L1 clubs not too long ago.

He'd been in the PNE squad pretty every game this season including their last match, can't see that happening.

Seems a bit pie in the sky but he was a decent target man at this level, hasn't hit it off since going up 2 leagues.

He does enjoys playing for Exeter and the manager knows him, maybe, but unlikely I tink.

It would appear some people did a wind up and some Exeter fans fell for it hook line and sinker.

Its gotta be said I can't remember when the club as a whole had this sort of feeling about it. Under Cooper the team was good but the feeling was meh, under PDC it was all about him and Paolo's Swindon. Good times for a change.

Predictably it will be 0-0.  And Doyle won't score for the rest of the season  ;D

Heart says we'll win but head says Exeter don't lose 2 on the bounce very often.

1-1 in front of a big crowd by the sound of it.

They lost to Cambridge and Scunthorpe back to back in October, both away from home, but that's it in terms of back to back defeats.

Similarly, we've only suffered the same fate once, Newport (H) and Bradford (A).

Impossible to call this one, can only hope the feel good factor and the big crowd give us the edge.

Yep, you will be able to find Sky Sports in some of the English bars, but you do realise they won't be featuring the L2 crunch match live. PM me if you're interested.

Fuck me, I assumed you were joking!  That's a really generous offer but we're on the 12.24 from St P so I think won't be getting into Gare Du Nord until nearly 4pm (3pm in proper money) even if on time and need to check in to our hotel so will do well to find a bar showing Mr Stelling by time 2nd half is under way.

But thanks, really appreciated.

Depending on where you're staying, good bets for Sky Sports are likely to be the Frog n Rosbif in the rue St Denis, The Bombardier near the Panthéon or The Bowler near the Champs-Elysées. Drop me a line if you need more advice.

We're staying at Mercure Gare Du Nord, 175 Rue La Fayette, 75010 Paris.

Most of the guys will be heading for a bar showing the Ireland/Scotland game but at least one other guy is a Chelsea fan mainly going for the weekend rather than the rugby, doesn't give a rat's arse about the Celts game and wants to watch sky sports with me, so any ideas about a bar near there would be really great.

Had to check on Google, but the closest appears to the The Hideout just by the Gare du Nord, which says it does sport. The problem in all of them, and especially the Irish ones, will be finding one that does footy rather than the rugby. Maybe ring ahead to check.

Like many L2 teams, including yourselves, we tend to blow hot and cold depending on which team turns up. Hopefully, we'll both be firing in a reaction to our respective 3-1 midweek loss, resulting in a cracking game and may the best team win.

Buzzing !  :pint:

Fantastic effort bringing 2000 fans and really looking forward to a big crowd and boisterous atmosphere from both sets of fans.if we get our football going we can be superb and tend to struggle against non footballing teams who like to kick lumps rather than a high tempo passing game.

Ah, you're only up the road ! With an old school cenner back now as manager the team has a more robust and physical approach now, and Newport for one certainly didn't bully us. That said, we're more than capable of playing football as witnessed at our match at SJP, when honours were even. With your prodigal sons returning up front, wouldn't be surprised if we set up defensively, adopt the more physical approach and counter. Hope not, your big wide pitch is for playing football.

That said, we're more than capable of playing football as witnessed at our match at SJP, when honours were even. With your prodigal sons returning up front, wouldn't be surprised if we set up defensively, adopt the more physical approach and counter. Hope not, your big wide pitch is for playing football.

Good post! We got bullied at Newport due to our injuries, suspensions and no prescience at front but did ok well beating Salford away. Yes we have a big superb pitch and a full county ground is very atmospheric

Is the capacity still 15,700? If we’ve sold out all the home sections and Exeter are only down about 1000 on capacity, that’s an unprecedented attendance for a league game for a long time.

Just shows what a bit of the feelgood factor can do.

About 13900 now I believe with the Arkells Stand and Bank seats taken out.

Alot of the Stratton Bank seats on the Nationwide Stand end were taken out to replace broken seats elsewhere.

They seem to think they are something special because they are trust owned. Don’t get me wrong I’d like supporters to have some say in STFC but at the same time 100% fan owned is very restrictive on finances and sometimes you need an outside injection of funds.

He said earlier in the month that he’s not a babysitter and if they don’t train properly they don’t deserve a place on the bench.

Power on now:

- Doyle only to season's end because he doesn't come cheap, so both parties need to review in the summer
- We've been tracking Hope since he was at Everton
- Muskwe preferred us over three L1 teams who were in for him - have very high hopes for him
- Palmer: been looking at him since he was at Burton, think his style matches the way we play
- We were looking at CBs, but none came up
- Don't want to see my bank statement for a while! I got a lot of stick for trying to keep the budget under control, but this was the right time to roll the dice and take our chance
- Training ground ongoing. Council's been fantastic, but it's been at the bottom of a big pile of papers for the last couple of weeks. When it unblocks, things will happen quickly

Accidental, no way he meant that and it gave him a disadvantage

If only Yates had nudged his foot an inch further forward.  We look like a hot knife going through butter when we get attacks going.  This top 4 would be good enough for the next league up.  Shame Baudry got confused by Caddis when he just needed to clear everything together otherwise we would be well on top.

Title: Re: Swindon v Exeter pre match chat and matchday thread
Post by: Nemo on Saturday, February 1, 2020, 15:45:02
Caddis definitely elbowed that.

Things you don't get from the commentary: DJ's close control is absolutely special. He can do things with the ball at his feet that I've never seen at our level.

HT. We’ve looked much the better team, but will have to contend with the wind against us in the second half. Amazingly, stats show 48/52 possession. As bollocks as Brexit.

The whole team right up for it. Everyone doing their job. Special mentions: DJ very bright, but sometimes overplaying it. Caddis very strong on the right. Hope very involved.

That would be hilarious.

Hope is not as good on the ball as Yates and certainly not Isgrove but he has a strikers instincts.  He has had several shots but has also been a pass away from being in on goal a few times.  He gets in really dangerous positions.

Yep we can really turn the screw here. You can see we can take it up a couple more notches if need be. Wind may aid Exeter as it did us slightly, in 2nd half. If we apply the pressure and go for a third, I see them not having enough.

Game management and nothing silly from the defence. We will win this.

Has there been a decent day of weather for a game since September?

That second half was tough, but expected given the wind gave us the advantage in the first half.  The difference was that we created chances in the first half and they rarely created much in the second.

Great result.

With the team we have available now and the games after Northampton give us a real chance now to cement our place at the top.

Dominos hand out pizza to one ‘lucky’ person and Mr Batch’s name came out of the draw.

Batch won pizza for his row .
You post your stand and seat no on the club's pizza post and a winner is drawn.

Had to struggle past a pair of dominos delivery blokes going down the stairs.

This squad literally has everything now, absolutely no reason we shouldn’t go on to win the league. The Leicester lad looked decent in his cameo as well.

Well we've got through the tough period of January including the window, relatively unscathed.  The addition of a couple of further bodies who can play up front is also a help as relying on 2 was always pushing it.  It's still got to be done, but is doable...

‘Twas not a game for the purists sadly. Doughty lucky again to be on the pitch at the end of 90 mins. Jerry and Pelé clearly need a few games to get back into the groove. Booth tried a bit to hard in wanting to show the fans their credentials which was understandable. Caddis MOTM, yes as were a few others but over all three points against a promotion rival, can’t argue with that.

Job very much done in tricky conditions against a good side. Grant, Caddis, DJ, REG impressive, and Yates' work rate off the ball was good. Pretty solid all round really. Very good three points to pick up.

Doesn’t take away from the fact he couldn’t kick a ball properly. Benda is able to to hit the opposition half in any conditions.

Yates' work rate off the ball has been immense from the opening day at Sunny Scunny.  A class act in this division... and hopefully the one above next year.  I guess we have to hope Rotherham get promoted as well.

Been out since October with a broken arm, plate job. A tough return in those conditions when rusty. That said, Benda's distribution was far superior.

The conditions ruined the game as a spectacle, but I still enjoyed it. I think the effort was there for all to see, we battled.

I am sure Exeter will be miffed at not getting a point. But frankly who cares. I think we edged it anyway..

Good to meet JJ too pre-match.

Don't think you'd have had too many complaints had we nicked a point, but agree that Town edged it overall. We were miffed by the performance of the officials at times, that's for sure.

Regardless smashing a ball high into the air against the wind was brain dead and he did it every time, one of his kicks almost went out for a corner. Benda is a proper sweeper keeper and miles better than anything else at this level.

What a win! Not read back yet but can't believe the Adver report didn't mention the wind at all. It was a huge part of the match and meant our second goal just before half time was massive otherwise we'd have been completely up against it.

Great to see a big crowd and good battling performance from everyone.

Plymouth, Crewe, Newport, Port Vale, Bradford, Colchester and Exeter all in a month and we're still top is remarkable. Just Northampton to negotiate.

Believe so (Hope's goal total), Wellens does seem to have a knack of getting the best out of a player.  Seems he has a clear idea of how we will play and who he needs to slot into each position to make that happen.

How good was it to see a full CG today? That said I didn’t think the atmosphere was particularly great, but I was sitting in the Arkells so maybe it came across better in Town End/DRS.

The wind clearly had an effect on the game and it took a while for both sides to settle down. I don’t actually think we played very well today, it was scrappy overall. Fluky opener from a wind assisted Doughty corner and we looked comfortable until we gifted an equaliser after an awful dilly dally on the edge of the box. Of course it fell to their best player who finished nicely. We scored at the right time, fantastic delivery by DJ and Hope couldn't miss!

The second half was a non-event. Exeter had most of the ball but never really looked like scoring. We had some chances on the break but the passing was off. I thought Yates had his poorest game for us but of course worked hard. DJ, Grant and Caddis my stand out players but I thought we were below par. Williams looked a class act for Exeter but I was disappointed in them overall.

3 massive points though, can’t ask for more!

Great result. As others have said, the wind limited the quality on show, and we clearly adapted our style to suit. It’s days like that which highlight how important players like Grant and Caddis are - who use their body so well to win second balls and buy fouls. Over the years we always seem to have some players who lack confidence and nous - the only one out there in that bracket, who seems to get rattled a bit, is REG - but he’s young, and Fryers will a slot back in I suspect.

DJ has come on leaps and bounds too. As others have alluded to, it was tough for Yates and Doyle in that, but both could have scored. Yates is such an all rounder and worked his balls off getting back. As (I believe) his first game on the right, his link up play with Cads was decent. Two very intelligent players. And whilst Hope doesn’t necessarily get you on the edge of your seat as Woolery does, Woolery doesn’t seem to get in the goalscoring positions Hope has done in each game he has played. A wide man with a striker’s instinct. Whilst it wasn’t pretty, it was entertaining and engaging - the atmosphere was great, and above all else, positive. We’re in for a cracking run in, with a few more decent gates to come.

Not the best game I've ever seen, but thoroughly enjoyed it nonetheless, we created some decent chances first half, adapted well to the conditions (or better than they did anyway) and enough nerves/edge in the second half to keep the adrenaline going, even if the football was a bit attritional. Brilliant to see the County Ground full again. Hopefully there was enough in the game and the atmosphere to persuade a few of those coming back/coming for the first time to keep returning. This team deserves it.

Thought their no 11, Williams, was decent, always a bit jittery when he had the ball as he always looked like he could make something happen.

According to Twitter, some of the Exeter massive tried kicking off with Rockin' Robin at half time :Ride On Fatbury's Lovestick:

The Exeter fan did indeed kick off with Rockin Robin. One also gave it large and fell over on the netting in the bank. Very amusing.

The wind made the game a bit of a farce but we were comfortably better and deserved 3 points
Should've been out of sight at half time and bar the goal, which we gifted them, they didnt threaten us at all. Their number 11 was tidy though.

Good crowd, atmosphere I think also struggled with the quality on show but it had its moments and the club really does feel united again. Hope those that showed up return in 2 weeks for Scunny.

First time in over 40 years of attending the County Ground I've known a sell out at 12 o'clock,  especially a game that's not an all ticket game.  Saw a few disappointed fans on my way into the ground.  Must be honest if Flash hadn't kicked me up the arse and told me to get an eticket Thursday night I would have been with them.  Our train doesn't arrive until just before one, so know I would have been out of luck.  Cheers Flash!!.
Anyway,  enjoyed the game even though the last 20 minutes was a nail biter,  wind ruined it for both sides but still think we edged it. Don't care who scored the first one, it went in, it counted.   Glad it went down as Pele, even if it wasn't just to wind up the Bradford fans, especially after all the shit they gave us.    Bowyer must be on thin ice now.  COYR's.

What I have noticed increasingly about our squad is that we seem to have a lot of the right type of characters i.e those that dont sulk or feel sorry for themselves if things dont go their way. Today was a good example of a game where a number of our previous squads would have buckled under an expectant large crowd and playing against a strong wind in the 2nd half. Players like Grant, Baudry, Caddis, Yates, Hunt and even Doughty this season have a mental toughness and resilience which previous teams haven't had. This is largely down to excellent recruitment and leadership, for which Wellens in particular must take great credit. It's certainly a great time to be a Town fan.

A big win today - in a game which the wind made proper football difficult. Once again we have ground out the 3 points, when STFC teams of the recent past would have drawn or lost that one.
Overall we deserved to edge a win, as we created a number of chances when playing  with the wind, whereas we prevented them from doing so second half - while Benda demonstrated his ability on crosses / through balls he didn’t have a shot to save.
Their goal was poor play by our defence - at different points in te build up REG and Baudry, and possibly Hunt all had chances to clear the ball. The first goal was definitely an OG - Doyle not close enough to have got a touch. DJ again showed the skill he has which frightens big defenders at this level, and created the 2nd goal.
Grant and Caddis main MOM candidates.
3 or 4 points from the two upcoming away games will keep us on track. The new depth in the squad means we can rotate if necessary which may help improve our midweek record at Northampton (after Carlisle).

Great day, good atmosphere which petered out a bit after half time. Should have been comfortably in front at the 45, but we allowed them back into the game in the second half by our constant kicking it up against the wind, heading as well, if we could have kept it on the ground a bit more and fed DJ it could have been a bit more conclusive.  Hard to pick out a mom for me, but the amount of work that Grant got through would have had my vote, a good battling performance with 100% effort from all.  Didn't rate Exeter too highly when we went down there and they certainly seemed a bit limited today.  Not sure their system does them too many favours, one up front made them quite light in attack - although their no. 11 gave me the jitters when he ran at them.

Watching Wellens post-match interview it appears he was willing to take a risk that they wouldn't get anything, ultimately he was right and other than a couple of dangerous balls in the box in the second half he was right.

Couple of tricky games coming up, especially a week Tues so was a big win.

My favourite comment from an Exeter fan

‘They purposely designed the CG to be a wind tunnel to give them an unfair advantage’

I’m sure that was uppermost in their minds when it was first built in 1896!

How the fuck does that give us an advantage? Without the wind we would have utterly destroyed them yesterday.

And, yes, their holier than thou attitude about fan ownership grips my shit. If their only ambition is to get to L1, then fine.

Power must be the saltiest Sugar Daddy ever!

I enjoy a good trawl of the opposition’s forums after a game and have read some utter shite in my time doing so, but that is far and away the stupidest thing I’ve seen. It’s so stupid, in fact, that I’m concerned I may have been whooshed. Guess I’ll never know.

Cads has a really good game, Grant is so good. Their goal was very lucky indeed, defensive miscommunication and that was that.

Their goalie’s kicking was abysmal, Benda adapted to the wind much better. Kicked with a lot more punch and tried to keep it low as best he could. Yates has a tough game but worked his arse into the ground, as did the ginger one. Everyone else played well in what was a tricky game.

I thought Exeter were very poor indeed. They should have gone into half time more than one behind and needed to come out all guns blazing with the wind in their favour, but basically did nothing all half.

One more thing, we’ve given up our right to moan about home ball boys in the future. I don’t enjoy watching them fanny arse around, they are there to get the ball moving as quickly as they can, they aren’t there to affect the game. If they are being instructed to behave like that it should stop

Over 11,000 home fans shows that there is still interest in the club over and above the 6 or 7,000 regulars.
Bodes well if ever there was another period of sustained success.

Hope is yet another new signing who appears to have settled straight in.
That's credit to the coaching staff and also to the (footballing) intelligence of the players that have come in over the season.

Not sure who the guy with the auburn hairpiece was that took Batch's seat in the DRS.
A lucky charm. He'll have to make it to the rest of the home games.

So great to win infront of a bumper crowd. This must be our first win over Exeter for years? Anyone remember our last off the top of their head??

That 'wind tunnel' comment I just..I can't even...

Edit: Oct 4th 2011 2-1 win in the Johnstones paint pot was our last win vs them.

It's probably not quite that simple.  I'd imagine that a fairly high proportion of the 11,000 yesterday would think of themselves as regulars...or semi-regulars.  Not everyone goes to every game, and it's not the same 6,000-7,000 core fans turning out every week for the mundane games.  What happened yesterday, I'm guessing, is that a much higher proportion of the fans who probably turn up every 3 to 4 games all decided to turn up at once.

EDIT: But that, of course, doesn't contradict your main point that there is a good-sized fan base out there that's prepared to engage with the club when there is something there to be a part of.

Obviously does give us an advantage. Never lost at The County Ground or been relegated have we. Why do you think we sing S-WIND-on?

Am sure it’s been said already, but Jayesimi was outstanding in the first half yesterday. Faded in the second, but they all did. His cross for Hope was beautiful.

Wasn’t particularly sold on him pre-Christmas, but since January he’s been one of our best players for me Clive

Agreed. He seems to have learned when to keep
it simple and also how to use his obvious physical strength. Another of those that you hope we could keep for another year if we can go up, if he’s not in Norwich’s immediate plans.

Can't wait for this game, big crowd, a lot of buzz, feels like a playoff semi final game.

A hard fought 2-1 victory in front of 12,300 fans.

Should've put a bet on it, what a knobhead.

That's my fifth victory in a row.

JJ’s at the game and I have no idea how he manages to type and watch.
Double window on PC :)

Havent read back yet but my God that was great, Exeter fans seemed really quiet considering their numbers, Swindon fans though were very loud from where I was sat near the front of the Arkells with Gazza, met up with Batch who supplied me with a ginger wig which we both wore :)

The game was ruined by the wind, we dominated the first half and should have scored a couple more, had no idea who scored either goal as the tannoy was shocking, still they all count! a goal froma corner too! and the cross from DJ for Hopes goal was sublime.

Their winger Williams is an irritating twat, there was no need for his acrobatics after the goal, he was a constant thorn in Hunts side all game and if Baudry hadn't hesitated he wouldnt have scored.

He was the only player on the Exeter team that I would think would get near our team, they were a team of hoofers if that was anything to go by.

They picked their game up 2nd half with the wind behind them but they were very poor in front of goal and we defended much better 2nd half.

Grant, Doughty and Caddis all were superb. Benda had no chance with the goal but otherwise didn't put a foot wrong. We never really looked like conceding even with the wind behind them, I just wish we didn't keep hoofing the ball upfield, if we had kept the ball down then we would have created far more chances.

Being at the game and watching Doyle and Yates movment off the ball was interesting, they both seem to instictively know where each other is and Yates was desperate to interplay with Doyle and on a few occassions it worked very well right up to the final shot.

Woolery looked disinterested when he came on and Admiral was off like Usain Bolt at one stage, man he is fast, those weren't the best conditions for him though but he looks promising on the first few touches for us.

Overall very pleased with the performance, very pleased with the Swindon turn out, great result and great to see the players clapping the fans and coming over to them after the match, a real togetherness at last.

Long may it continue, now to go back and read this thread as I have just got home!

Great to catch up finally with Batch and missed out seeing Flash and 4D as we popped in the legends and it was heaving in there.

I've always rated Gerken actually, and he was very good last week. We could do worse than to sign him up when Benda goes back, as he surely will. That was Exeter's reserve keeper on Saturday, and he wasn't up to much.

Gerken is pretty decent TBF but I honestly think Benda is better. Flinders is another keeper does well against us. Yes if we go up and Colchester dont then he could well be a target, but hes only a year and a bit younger than LMc.

Sure, but we'll only ever be able to afford Benda on loan. Great if we're allowed another year of him if we go up, but it's not worth spending big bucks on a keeper. If he doesn't come back, we either need to get another bright young hope on loan, or invest in someone like Gerken or Flinders. Keepers' shelf-life is a lot better than outfield players.

But can someone explain to me why Saturday, of all days, we chose to go long with every kick, rather than playing it out like we have all season? I can't remember a single short goal-kick. It was perverse how much the ball was in the air all afternoon in fact.

Benda is the only one out of the 3 that has a chance of a career in the top flight and it looks like he has a very good chance of that happening as he’s only 21. Imagine he is on the radar of a lot of clubs.

I'm no tactics guru but I think Exeter pressed us quite high up the pitch generally not giving us this option. Perhaps Wellens thought that REG was too much of a risk to try and play out from the back?

I did notice this as well RF.

Simple, if you play short and get boxed in you have no out ball as the wind will limit the effectiveness of clearances. Also the wind increases the chances of mistakes so the last thing you want is to get penned in.

Yep, I think you're both right. The combination of their high line and relative quality, REG's inexperience and the conditions might well have led to the instruction to play safe and long. I remember when people used to say Wellens didn't have a plan B.

A few posts during/after the game on the Exeter forum, as normal.

Quote
"another late tackle by Doughty but no booking".
Dirty barsteward. Wish we had a Clive Whitehead or Graham Parker to sort that **** out.

Criminal that Doughty can take our captain out of the game, not even get a booking, and then they bloody score

Swindon are ripping us to pieces, they could be 3 - 0 up.
Our back line is being exposed for it's lacks of pace. Sweeney, Martin, Parkes and Moxey sadly isn't the answer against better quality teams.

Disappointing that Bowman got booked for that when some Swindon players have hammered ours with some challenges in this half without anything.

very deserved lead for Swindon, Jaiyesimi has caused us a lot of problems.

A freak goal cause by the wind, their second could have been prevented

Very strong attacking half from Swindon but we have made too many misjudgments at the back. They could have literally scored five this half with more clinical finishing, which at least gives us hope. We misjudged the wind very badly, you can't keep thumping the ball into the air towards the half way line when it comes back to you. Playing against the wind isn't always a disadvantage in this league but it has been so far for us. We need to use it in our favour second half. I'm sorry but I honestly can't see us causing them problems unless the team shape changes.

Massive Hand ball then off side with their move with cross straigh after that for their 2nd. Can't play against that. Very Bad Refereeing and everyone in stand agrees.

All I'll say, we would been 3-4 down if Maxted had been in goal. Ward instills confidence in the defenders

Very very poor performance, lucky to be 2 - 1 down rather than 4 or 5.

Defensively we have been very suspect, midfield has been very average and going forward we have done next to nothing. Apart from Williams goal we have looked totally toothless.

Shame Swindon scored a goal that should never have stood. Clear handball in build up.

Looking at the replay, it's one of those handballs that would definitely be given under the current rules strictly speaking. The player that plays the ball into the box collects the ball after it hits his arm and it very much helps him get the ball under control. Not deliberate but technically a handball under current rules. And as you say "massive" in the sense of obviousness and contact with the arm.

Still a lot of games to go, we wont meet many teams as good as Swindon.

Randell Williams was excellent all the way through this game for me, but otherwise we weren't good enough to win this game.

Swindon were a good side, the wind was obviously a huge factor in the game and Swindon handled it better on the day.

Swindon with their strike force.....the Championship must now be theirs to lose.

We move on Swindon have been top for a long time and are there for a reason

Lost too many 50/50s and second balls today. Never gave ourselves the opportunity to play. Swindon sharper all round.

To lose away to the team that is top of the league, that had extra mo with their 2 goalscorers back, that had 11k fans behind them and a ref who failed to send off their dirty barsteward Doughty is no shame and there's no need to panic.
But the brief but implausible rumour that Stockley was coming back makes you realize what we're missing.

I did find it interesting how so many of the Swindon fans on various forums berated Newport for their tactics, yet in the 2nd half there was rarely a ball boy in sight and their keeper was runing the clock down from the 46th minute. their time wasting tactics were so blatant and the ref just let it all happen.

we did give it a right go in the second half but Beaten by the better side - adapted to the wind better than us - and our final ball and crosses were generally poor. They saw the game out in a way that we never seem to be able to at home against average teams.

Swindon battered us with the wind behind them first half... We couldn't exert the same pressure 2nd half. I think basically because they're a better side. One or two of our players seem to be not quite at their best at the moment

Referee had a shocker today. Was surprised when I realised he was the same ref we had against Plymouth when he gave us a very soft pen. Must be a homer!
Also my Swindon Supporting uncle was right behind the handball in the build up to the goal and he said it was a clear handball.

No doubts that Swindon are a good side and will be promoted. Couldn't believe it when they

I think with such a potent strike force of Doyle, Yates and Hope the league title is now Swindon’s to lose.

I don't think Swindon will drop away

They’re a good side who will win the league, on to the next one...

Matt Taylor disappointed that City didn't compete and were 2nd to the ball all over the pitch...
The there was all the shit about Power being laughingly described as a sugar daddy, no need to post the vitreol idiotic comments from a lot of Exeter fans about that. Comments like "you end up crying in their beer when their club finds itself on the brink of extinction due to financial mismanagement and reliance on one individual. Join you? No thanks."
Quote
Good atmosphere. Swindon fans were good all game I thought, behind their team.

The Swindon ‘keeper did not have a meaningful save to make despite the wind assisted possession the Grecians had.
A missed handball in the build up to the 2nd goal was ultimately the difference between the sides. But in truth the home side created & squandered many opportunities in the first half.

Never thought I would see it.Ballboys that take the pi55 more than the goons at Home Park !

Not wanting to sound bitter as Swindon were clearly the better team today, but I'd almost say it's cheating to design your ground to be a wind tunnel. Because that's what it is.

Losing against Swindon away considering all the circumstances is not a disaster

Obviously the conditions played a big part in the game yesterday with Doughty and Jaiyesimi showing everyone inside the County ground how to put a ball into the box with the wind how it was....practically every corner or cross they put over was extremely difficult to defend and looked like something could come of it with Doughty coming close to putting two or three corners into the top corner himself.....and then second half what was so disappointing for me City failed to put a decent corner or cross into the Swindon box all half most of them under shoulder height

I thought that given everything that was stacked against - injuries, unsympathetic ref etc - we actually competed against Swindon pretty well and weren’t blown away by the team who look like finishing as champions.

I think Swindon will won the league but the other 2 spots are right up for grabs.

On the whole only a couple of ridiculous statements from those Exeter comments. Most of those was pretty fair and measured. I picked out some of the more silly ones.

"Massive Hand ball then off side with their move with cross straigh after that for their 2nd. Can't play against that. Very Bad Refereeing and everyone in stand agrees."

The hand ball was a hand ball but it bounced up and Caddis didn't know where the ball was so clearly accidental. That said, if the shoe was on the other foot I would have been annoyed. That said, what offside is he referring to though?? Also, how does he know if everyone in the stand agrees, has he asked them all? Finally who cares if they agree or not!!

"All I'll say, we would been 3-4 down if Maxted had been in goal. Ward instills confidence in the defenders"

No, just no. Their keeper was a nightmare.

"Not wanting to sound bitter as Swindon were clearly the better team today, but I'd almost say it's cheating to design your ground to be a wind tunnel. Because that's what it is."

Clearly this one has been on the toilet duck.

I also have a bit of sympathy with the fans that mentioned about Doughty. He got a booking and then made a couple of niggly, silly fouls that probably didn't warrant a yellow, but had Exeter made a bit more of a meal of things he could have seen red.

Even GP himself said he didn't get a touch of it in his postmatch. Clearly the ball swerved in through the sheer force of his charisma.

With talking about the exeter forum, on there is a 360 video highlights package with a view on the "doyle" goal from the angle of the dugouts. it goes over his head by miles and literally no where near. i hate mates get paid out on skybet for doyle being credited. quite funny, the commentator of that video said yates headed it onto the defender to throw another name in the hat

Pretty fair comments overall (cheers for posting JJ)...although the Power/Sugar Daddy comments were pretty funny - football fans can be so bitter sometimes (and our own fans are no different).

And talking of bitter...

Not wanting to sound bitter as Swindon were clearly the better team today, but I'd almost say it's cheating to design your ground to be a wind tunnel. Because that's what it is.

This is the most unintentionally hilarious comment from an opposing fan I have ever read  :Ride On Fatbury's Lovestick:

Not bitter? No, not much - Very bitter and very, very stupid ;)

I thought at the time that he was lucky. He did one just after he'd been booked and was lucky (and you could see he knew it too) that the Ref played the advantage. And shortly after he did another silly little foul.

Just sour grapes isn't it. We deserved to win the game and did so.

It went in off his aura.

This hasn't got the credit it deserved. Brilliant comment!  :Ride On Fatbury's Lovestick:

I think in fairness though most of them are saying that...

Well, if they think Doughty should have had a red what about Bowman(?) who was very late in on Frenchie and left him in a heap - I was sure that was going to be a red.

Saying that, Doughty does seem to have been in a raw meat diet lately.

Ironically, I think he's a vegan....(or am I making that up? Nor sure)

Yeah most are well rounded posts, a few though are special needs, but then with Walker and Kostiuk we can't judge ;)

Stupid sexy Flinders.
I don't think I have ever seen hiom play badly against us, I remember hearing that for the first time when he was playing for Hartlepool against us and some Town End wag shouted it after he made a a string of amazing saves.

That was in 2009 IIRC. He was amazing that day.

Rose is the one who has gone vegan, not sure about Doughty.

I have never seen Doughty going in and winning so many tackles and headers as he did on Saturday, his tackling leaves a lot to be desired though. Almost like he has upped his game knowing we have Palmer waiting in the wings to come in.

The other comment I agree with the Exeter folks about is the behaviour of the ball boy who deliberately wasted time and then engaged in mutual applause with a few idiots in the  end block of the DRS.
I forgot to include this in my post on Saturday evening.
This is unnecessary, and we should be better than that. It makes us look cheap and should be clamped down on.
Ball boys are there to facilitate the game and speed it up, not interfere with it. If the boot were on the other foot at an away ground we would be apoplectic.
Rant over

When I was a ball boy we were always told to slow the game down if we were winning. I thought it was quite funny and tbf, Benda was also telling him to slow it down. The ball boy got a telling off afterwards.

The ref went over to speak to the stadium manager about it a couple of times during the game, and will have included it in his report. I agree, it's cheap behaviour. I actually hate the extent to which players slyly kick the ball away all the time. Even when the ref sees it, he doesn't do anything about it. There's been more of it this season than I've seen before, and the League needs to clamp down on it in general.

They still are. Or at least to do as the players ask.

I particularly liked how after being talked to, he only half threw it back to Benda next time it went out .

The ballboy is at school with my eldest.

I always thought that new match balls are available when the current one is off the pitch - or is that just in the PL?
